20093MAR299295763642377330023021087@scout.org.hk267500115,5005總部動態來年重點計畫金牛獻瑞賀新春牛年歡聚,共慶新春!─記總會己丑年新春團拜123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123123SoonafterScouting'spostwarre-launch,itgrewbeyondtheoriginalfourtroopsofBritishboysandpenetratedabroaderethnicbase,withtheinclusionofScottish,Eurasians,andeliteBritishChineseboys.LimitedprogressinthisdirectionwasencouragedbyStubbs,thegovernorandChiefScout,andlargelyledbyRev.GeorgeTurnerWaldegrave,chaplainoftheSeamen'sInstituteandaMason,whowasappointedthenewcommissionerinNovember1921.WaldegravewastobecomethemostimportantCommissionerduringtheinterwardecades.ThefirstChinesetrooptobeformedwas6thHongKongoftheEllisKadoorieSchool(),startedin1921.AreportontheEmpireDaychildren'sserviceatSt.John'sCathedralinMaynoteditspresenceunderScoutmasterA.White.Thiswasfollowedby7thHongKong,SaiyinpunSchool(),underScoutmasterLeungYuk-tong(),andsupportedbyHoKom-tong,whichwasinauguratedinOctober1921.ThatthefirsttwoChinesetroopswereformedintwoelitistgovernmentChineseschoolsisclearevidenceofofficialencouragementofScoutingbeyondethnicBritishand,inparticular,amongBritishChineseboys.TheearliestChinesetroopsponsoredbyachurchwasthatoftheChineseMethodistChurch.ThoughWesleyans'missionaryeffortinHongKongstartedwithBritishmilitary,itsoonbranchedouttoChinesecivilians.By1916,theChineseMethodistChurchhadmovedintoitsnewfacilityonCaineRoadunderRev.SuPeiQiu().In1921,T.K.Chak(),sonofafoundingmemberofthechurch,formed8thHongKong,witharoundthirtyChineseboys.OneoftheearliestphotographsofalocalChinesetroopshowsovertwentymembersinfulluniforminafarewellpartyforRev.Su,wholeftforapostinginFoshaninDecember1921(Figure1).Thistroop,likethatofSt.Andrew'sandBritishWanchaiWesleyan,waslinkedtotheSundayschool.JustasBritishandChineseWesleyansworshippedinseparatechurches,BritishandChineseWesleyanboystrainedinsegregatedtroops,aphenomenonwhichcouldbeinterpretedasrace-inspiredorlanguage/culture-based,dependingonone'sinclinations.Byendof1921,thefirstfullyearofpostwarScouting,therewere300members,andWaldegraveadmittedthathewassurprisedattheextremelyablewayinwhichtheChineseScoutmastershavegraspedthemainideaofasystementirelynoveltothem,andatthekeennesswhichtheyaresucceedinginimplantingitintheirscouts.Anothernewtroopwas5thHongKong,officiallyinauguratedinApril1922atthefootballgroundoftheUniversityofHongKong.TheLimitedRacialInclusion,1921-19252009PaulKUA,allrightsreservedcopentroop,latercommonlyknownastheRovingFifth,servedmainlyAnglo-ChineseandotherEurasianboys.EurasiansinHongKong,thoughsometimessubtlyorevenblatantlydiscriminatedagainstbytheethnicBritishcommunity,oftenplayedimportantrolesasmiddlemenbothingovernmentandcommercialenterprises.Itis,therefore,notsurprisingthatthisgroupshouldbeoneoftheearliestoutsideethnicBritishtoformaBoyScoutTroop.Reflectingtheimportanceattachedbythecommunitytothisproject,SirWilliamBrunyateandLadyBrunyate,LauChuPak(),R.H.Kotewallandhiswife,andWaldegravewereallpresent.Lau,thetreasureroftheBoyScoutsAssociation,hasalreadybeenmentionedearlierinthiscolumn.RobertHormusKotewall(),aParsee-ChinesewithaChinesewife,wasalsoapoliticalheavy-weight,beingatthetimetheunofficialmemberoftheLegislativeCouncilrepresentingtheChinese(Figure2).Asthiswasanopentroopwithoutanorganizationalsponsor,itmetatthespacioushomeofLauTak-po,usingtworoomsasclubrooms,andthelawnforoutdooractivities.ScoutmasterK.W.BarneyawardedScoutbadges.AmongtheboysmentionedwereSixerD.AndersonandPatrolLeaderJ.Kotewall,bothEurasians.TheScoutingeventoftheyearfor1922wasdefinitelythevisitfromthePrinceofWales,akeensupporterofScouting,inApril.Afterhelanded,theprincewascarriedaroundbyapartyofeightonaChinesesedanchairdecoratedonbothsideswithabeautifullyembroideredvermillionsilkpanelbearinghisheraldicbadge,theso-calledPrinceofWales'FeatherswiththemottoinGerman,ichdien,whichmeanIserve(Figure3).AhighlightofhisvisitwastheinspectionoftheBoyScoutsandtheGirlGuidesatGovernmentHouse.Whenhearrived,onlyWolfCubsandBrownieswerevisible,whohonoredhimwithagrandhowl.Afterwards,asJanMorrisnoted,therewasasuddenblastofawhistle,andoutoftheshrubberiessprangahordeofboyscoutsandgirlguides,'allyelling',asaretold,'shrilly'.TheythengatheredbehindthecolorbearersandgavealoudrenditionoftheChinesecordialwelcome,KungYing().ThefollowingScoutTroops(somewiththeirCubPacks)wereinspectedbytheprince:Thisline-upwouldappearratherbalancedandsatisfactorytotheprince,withethnicBritishboys,BritishChinese,Portuguese,Eurasianandothernationals.(Part1of5)TypeTroopsBritishSt.Andrew's,Wesleyan,MurrayMixedSt.Joseph's,Roving5th(Eurasian)ChineseEllisKadoorie,Saiyingpun,ChineseWesleyanTable1:TroopsatthePrinceofWalesInspection,1922CHEUNGPui-szeguidesthePatrolLeaderstheskillstoleadtheK
