EnglishpersonalstatementEnglishLiteratureandFrenchpersonalstatementEnglishLanguagepersonalstatementEnglishLanguagepersonalstatementEnglishPersonalStatementEnglishwithEducationpersonalstatementEnglishLanguage&LiteraturepersonalstatementEnglishLiteratureEnglishpersonalstatementIhavealwaysbeenfascinatedbythewaywriterscaninfluence,andevenmanipulatereadersemotionsbytheirexpressionofthoughts,andbytheirabilitytoencouragetheexpansionofourimaginationsandunderstanding.MyfavouriteauthorsincludePhillipPullman,CarolineB.CooneyandalsoIanMcEwan,whosenovelsareinspiringbecauseoftheirenviablelucidityandinnovativecharacterdevelopment.Itismyloveofliteraturethathasstimulatedmetowritecreativelyforpleasure.IthereforewanttostudyEnglishfurtherasacatalystformyownwritingandtoextendmyknowledgeofasubjectforwhichIhavedevelopedapassion.Myloveofdramainspiredmefromayoungagetotakepartinschoolproductionsbycompetingwithoverahundredgirlsinauditionsandsuccessfullysecuringparts.IperformedintheproductionofOthelloattheGreenwichtheatretwoyearsago,whichwasnotonlyaprivilegebutalsoanexhilaratingexperienceincommunicatingmyinterpretationtoalargeaudience.IamenthusiasticaboutallmystudiesandhavethereforedecidedtocontinuewithfourALevels.Mysubjectshaveenabledmetoenhanceanddevelopmanyskills.EnglishLiteraturehasfurtheredmyknowledgeofthestylisticdevicesemployedbyavarietyofwriters.InadditionIhavedevelopedtheskillofarguingcogentlyandeffectivelythroughmyownwriting.BiologyandPsychologyhaveprimarilyhelpedmetoacquiretheskillofinterpretingandlearningcomplexfactualinformation.Bothsubjectshavedevelopedmyunderstandingofethicalandcontemporaryissues,andhavethuscomplementedmystudyofEnglish.MystudyofHistoryhasallowedmetopursuemypassionforinvestigatingthepastbyretracingthestepsthathaveledtoourpresentcircumstances.Thesubjectoffersmeopportunitiesinabundancetoformulatemyownexplanations,whilstemphasisingtheimportanceofopen-mindednessinappraisingtheperspectivesofotherhistorians.IpursuedmyinterestinhistorythissummerbyapplyingtotheUCL/BritishLibrarysummerschoolofRevolutions,andwasselected,togetherwiththirty-fiveothersixthformersacrosstheUK.ThereIwasgiventheinspiringopportunitytoattendlecturesgivenbyrecognisedexpertswhowereatthecuttingedgeoftheirfieldofstudy.FurthermoreIwasgiventherareopportunityofhandlingprimarymaterial,whichIfoundoverwhelminggiventhatmanyofthedocumentsIstudiedwereoverfourhundredyearsold.Iplayanactivepartinmyschoolandhaveconsequentlybeeninvolvedinmanyextra-curricularactivities.Iwasappointedaprefect,anddischargedmyresponsibilitieswithsensitivity.Iamcurrentlyontheschoolssixthformcommittee.Myrolehereisdevelopingmyconfidence,leadershipskillsandcapacitytoworkco-operativelyaspartofateam.ByparticipatinginadebateaspartoftheUniversityAccessProgrammeIhavebecomemorearticulateinexpressingmyviews.Ihavementoredayoungerstudent,anexperiencethatprovedtobeparticularlyrewardingwhensheacquiredgreaterconfidenceinherreading.InadditionIamaMillenniumVolunteerandlookforwardtotheprospectofteachingITtoavarietyofpeoplewithphysicalorlearningdisabilitiesinmyvacationperiod.Iamaconscientious,sensitiveandcommittedstudentandamconfidentthatIhavethequalitiesandskillstosucceedatuniversity.Ilookforwardtothechallengeofademandingdegreecourse,andtotheopportunitytoplayasignificantroleinuniversitylife.EnglishLiteratureandFrenchpersonalstatementIamacontemplativeanddedicatedperson,widely-readandpreparedtoworklongandhardtofulfilthegoalsIsetformyself,bothnowandduringmyEnglishLiteratureandFrenchdegree.MyfamilyandIareveryclose,andtheyhavetaughtmetohaveconfidenceandindividualitycombinedwithpoliteness,humilityandgenerosity.Theseessentialqualitiesformthebasisofmybehaviourasayoungadult;forexample,eachSaturdayIdonateatenthofthewagesIearnedthatweektovariouscharitiessuchasSaveTheChildrenandActionMS,andseveralcustomersoftheshopinwhichIworkhavepraisedmyfriendlyandhelpfulmanner.TokeepfitIwalkwithmyfatheranddoginthecountryside,andtakeweeklyhorse-ridinglessons;thelatterhasbuiltonmyrespectfornatureandtheimportanceofteamwork,sinceitisimpossibletopartakeinsuchapotentiallydangeroussportunlesstheridersareabletoworkwitheachotherandtheiranimals.Aswellasthephysicalhealthandstrengthgained,ithasdevelopedmysenseofresponsibility,socialskillsandself-confidence:thesebenefitsofsportaddfurtherdepthtomycharacter,alsoaidingmeasastudent.EnglishLiteratureandFrenchinterconnectperfectly;theybalancelofty,infinitepossibilitieswitheffort.Toclarify:whenstudyingHamlet,IcontemplateifOpheliawastrulysuchashrinkingviolet,orifhersubmissivenessandsubsequentmadnesswasadefencemechanismtoescapethebullyingmisogynysopresentinElsinore;whetherornotherwoeismespeechissincerity,sarcasm,orboth,adinfinitum.AnhourlaterImayhaveaFrenchstudyperiodforgrammardrills,self-imposedvocabularytests,andre-readingmarkedessaystoseewhereIhavegonewrong.Thenextday,thesituationmaybereversed:analysingspecificwordchoicesinWilliamBlake'spoetryandunearthingthesubterfugeoflustinAndreGide'sLasymphoniepastorale.Bothsubjectsareadouble-edgedsword,asinreadingSartre'sHuisclos:aswellassimplee
