1.BriefintroductionofTuYouyou2.Malariaresearch-artemisinin3.InspirationBriefintroduction•TuYouyou,bornin1930inNingbo,hasbeenapharmacologistattheChinaAcademyofChineseMedicineSciencesince1965,engaginginresearchofthecombinationofTCMandWM.•TCM:traditionalChinesemedicine•WM:westernmedicine•Herdiscoveryofartemisininanditstreatmentofmalariaisregardedasasignificantbreakthroughoftropicalmedicineinthe20thcenturyandhealthimprovementforpeopleoftropicaldevelopingcountriesinSouthAsia,Africa,andSouthAmerica.Forherwork,Tureceivedthe2011LaskerAwardinclinicalmedicineandthe2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicine.•In11December（BeijingTime），TuYouyoureceivedher2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicineinSweden.•TuisthefirstChineseNobellaureateinphysiologyormedicineandthefirstcitizenofthePeople'sRepublicofChinatoreceivetheNobelPrizeinnaturalsciences.•“TheProfessorofThreeNos”:nopostgraduatedegree,nostudyorresearchexperienceabroad,notamemberofanyChinesenationalacademies.Malariaresearch-artemisinin•Artemisinin,adrugthathassignificantlyreducedthedeathrateofmalariapatients,andsavedmillionsoflivesacrosstheglobe,especiallyinthedevelopingcountry.•TustartedhermalariaresearchinChinawhentheCulturalRevolutionwasinprogress.Inearly1969,Tuwasappointedastheheadoftheproject,namedProject523researchgroupatherinstitute.Sheandhercolleaguesexperimentedwith380extractsin2,000candidaterecipesbeforetheyfinallysucceeded.•In1971,TuwasinspiredbymanyancientclassicworksonTCM.•Usingapioneeringlow-temperaturemethod,Tuandherteamfirstextractedartemisininfromasweetwormwoodplant(青蒿).•Forthesakeofdrugsafety,shehadpersonallytakingtests，whichledtoherliverpoisoning,butshestillkeptonworking,regardlessofpickingsamplesinthewild,orintheindoorexperimentstudy.Inspiration•AchievingmodernizationofTCMthroughscienceandtechnology.Tu‘ssuccessshowsthatTCMhastoembracemoderntechnologiesandlaboratorytoolsand,moreimportant,sticktotheessenceofthetime-honoredmedicalscience,practicinginnovationwhenusingTCMtheories.Tu'sNobelPrizewillpromptmorebasicscientificresearchintoancientTCMtextsandwaystoexploreresearchfindings.•EffectivecombinationofTCMandWM.ThereareenormoustreasureinTCM,soitcanplayamoreimportantroleinmodernmedicine.Inaddition,asimpleapplicationofWesternmedicalstandardstoTCMwon'twork,ChinesemedicinedevelopmentneedsmoreopeninclusiveofChineseandWesterntomakebreakthroughs.•Improvingtheinnovationmechanism.Chinashouldfocusoncultivatinggoodacademicresearchenvironmentandscientificresearchmechanismtoencouragemorescientists.Chinaspendsmorethan1billionyuan($156million)annuallyonTCM-relatedresearch,andthatinvestmentshouldbefurtherstrengthened.Thankyou
