RichardWright111QiuJiayuanContentBriefIntroductionPersonalExperienceWritingStyleMajorWorksInfluencesBriefIntroductionPoet,Author,JournalistPioneeringAfrican-AmericanwriterbornonSeptember4,1908inRoxie,MississippidiedinParis,FranceonNovember28,1960PersonalExperienceHelivedwithhismaternalgrandmotherfromearly1920untillate1925.Herehefeltstifledbyhisauntandgrandmother,whotriedtoforcehimtopraythathemightfindGod.HischildhoodinMemphisandMississippishapedhislastingimpressionsofAmericanracism.Attheageof16,Wrightpublishedhisfirststory,TheVoodooofHell'sHalf-Acre,intheSouthernRegister,alocalblacknewspaper.PersonalExperienceWrightmovedtoChicagoin1927.Aftersecuringemploymentasapostalclerk,hereadotherwritersandstudiedtheirstylesduringhistimeoff.In1932,hebeganattendingmeetingsoftheJohnReedClubwhichwasdominatedbytheCommunistParty.Wrightestablishedarelationshipwithanumberofpartymembers.WrightformallyjoinedtheCommunistPartyinlate1933andbecamearevolutionarypoetwhowrotenumerousproletarian(无产阶级的)poems.PersonalExperienceBy1935,Wrighthadcompletedhisfirstnovel,Cesspool,publishedasLawdToday(1963),andinJanuary1936hisstoryBigBoyLeavesHomewasacceptedforpublication.In1937,RichardWrightmovedtoNewYork.HeworkedontheWPAWriters'Projectguidebooktothecity,NewYorkPanorama(1938),andwrotethebook'sessayonHarlem.WrightbecametheHarlemeditoroftheDailyWorker.TherehegainednationalattentionforthecollectionoffourshortstoriesentitledUncleTom'sChildren(1938).ByMay6,1938,excellentsaleshadprovidedWrightwithenoughmoneytomovetoHarlem,wherehebeganwritingthenovelNativeSon(1940).PersonalExperienceWrightmovedtoParisin1946,andbecameapermanentAmericanexpatriate.AfterbecomingaFrenchcitizenin1947,WrightcontinuedtotravelthroughEurope,Asia,andAfrica.Theseexperienceswerethebasisofnumerousnonfictionworks.WrighthadcontractedamoebicdysenteryonavisittoAfricain1957,anddespitevarioustreatments,hishealthdeterioratedoverthenextthreeyears.HediedinParisonNovember28,1960,ofaheartattackattheageof52.StyleMuchofhisliteratureconcernsracialthemes,especiallythoseinvolvingtheplightofAfricanAmericansduringthelate19thtomid-20thcenturies.MajorWorks----NativeSon(fiction)NativeSon(1940),isthestoryofBiggerThomas,atroubledblacktwenty-year-oldwhoalmostseemsdestinedforjailrightfromthestartofthebook.WrightusesthestoryofBiggerThomastoexploretheeffectsthatracismhasonthepsychologyofsomeonewhomayhaveturnedouttobeanormalpersonunderdifferentcircumstances.Thefictionopenstheworld'seyestoracismandtheeffectsithas,andinthisrespect,Wright'sideaswerefaraheadofhistime.MajorWorks----BlackBoy(non-fiction)BlackBoy,1945,(AmericanHunger)isamemoirofRichardWright'schildhoodandyoungadulthood.Itissplitintotwosections,SouthernNight(concerninghischildhoodinthesouth)andTheHorrorandtheGlory(concerninghisearlyadultyearsinChicago).Inthisbook,heshowsthateveryonehasahungerforlifethatneedstobefilled,andforhim,writingishiswaytothehumanheart.InfluencesHisimpact,rather,hasbeenonideasandattitudes,andhisworkhasbeenaforceinthesocialandintellectualhistoryoftheUnitedStatesinthelasthalfofthe20thcentury.Wrightwasoneofthepeoplewhomademeconsciousoftheneedtostruggle,saidwriterAmiriBaraka.
