TheimportanceofreadingReading,asthemostdirectwaystoabsorbwritteninformation,isanessentialskillforEnglishlearners,sometimes,eventhemostimportantskill.InChina,readingofEnglishhastraditionallybeenthemostemphasizedskillinEnglishteaching,becauseChinesestudentslackanEnglishspeakingenvironment,therefore,readinghasbecomeawaythroughwhichstudentsgetlanguageinput.WithEnglishmoreandmorewidelyusedinsocialcommunication,reading,asoneofthefourbasicskillsoflanguageteachingandanaspectofcommunicativecompetence,hasdrawnmoreandmoreattentioninthelanguagecircles.EnglishreadingiswidelyseenasaneffectivewayinhelpingstudentsstudyEnglishandfundamentallyimprovetheirEnglishlanguagecompetence.Mostofpeoplebelievethatwherethereisnoreading,thereisnoimprovementinforeignlanguagelearning.Itshowstheimportanceofreading.Readingisalsoveryimportantinforeignlanguageteaching,thereasonofwhicharefollows:firstly,students’generalknowledgedependsonreading;secondly,readingisdoneinclassasmodelforfuturewriting;thirdly,readingtextsalsoprovideopportunitiestostudylanguage,suchasvocabulary,grammar,punctuation,orthewaysentences,paragraphsandtextsareconstructed;lastly,alsoismostimportantthatreadingcomprehensioncoverlargescoresinstudents’Englishtest.Readingcanbeanimportantbasicforindividuallearningaboutitspeopleanditscountryofthetargetlanguage.Fromreadingstudentswillknowthepresentcountriesandpastcivilization.Readingisaskillthatstudentswillhavemostopportunitiestouseandtheycanobtainnewspapers,magazinesandbookswritteninthesecondlanguage.Englishreadingplaysaveryimportantroleinforeignlanguagelearning,andefficientreadingwilllayafoundationforobtainingotherlanguageskillssuchaslistening,writingandspeaking,especiallyintheexamination.Readingisoneofthebasicwaysinlearningalanguage.ItisgenerallybelievedthatreadingisbyfarthemostimportantskillofthefourskillsforChineselearnersofEnglish.Readingisthebasiclanguageskills,isalsoanimportantlanguageinputmethod.EnglishreadingteachingisakeytoopenanotherdoortoletthestudentsseeinEnglishlanguagereadingonthehorizon,theirhorizonsfarbeyondthescopeoftheoriginalandsinglelanguageareathatotherpeoplecannotreachit.Theyhaveaccesstoavarietyofmaterials,Britain’sFrancisBaconsaid:“Readingenoughtocheer,forornament,thatislearned.”OnlyletthestudentsknowhowthetruecharmoftheEnglishreadingcanmakethemfallinlovewiththiscourseandlearnitfromtheheart.ReadingisbasictolearningEnglish,“Inasense,thekeytoimprovelistening,speakingandwritingskillsistheimprovementofreadingability.Ithelpsstudentstoexpandtheirknowledgeandvocabulary”.ThekeytotheteachingofreadingistoenablestudentsfromtheclassroomteachingandtobeinspiredtoreadmoreEnglishtextbooksfromotherreadingmaterialswhichcanimprovetheirEnglishlevel.Then,howcanweimprovethelevelofEnglish?Firstofall,studentscanenrichtheirvocabularybyreadinglargenumberofmaterials.Secondly,studentscanlearnmoreaboutthesyntaxinthereadingprocessandmasteritinthelanguageenvironmentexperience.Alsotheycanlearnfromteacher,seegrammarbooksanddotheappropriateexercises.Butthisunderstandingofthesyntaxisabstract,rawhard.Furthermore,readingisthebasicwaytoimprovestudents’Englishlistening,speaking,readingandwriting…Withthesyntaxofreadingestablished,thevocabularyandsenseoflanguageandotheraspectsofskillsdevelopeasierandmoreeffective.Ontheotherhand,readingcanhelpstudents’inspiretheirinterestsinlearningEnglish.ReadinginEnglishplaysanimportantroleinfascinatingthatstudentscanexperiencethelivinglanguage,understandandappreciateofthecharacteristicsoflanguagematerialsandstyle.Atthesametime,whenreadinginEnglish,studentscanlearnaboutforeignhistory,politics,culture,geographyandcustoms.Forexample:whenyouarereadingDickensWorks,youcanunderstandthenineteenth-centuryBritishsociety;readingcontemporaryliteraturecanunderstandofcontemporaryforeignsocietiesforthepursuitofindividuality;readingmagazinesofEnglishcanunderstandthelivingconditionsofforeigners.Sothatyoucanenablestudentstounderstandtheforeigncountries,tobroadentheirhorizonsanddevelopinterestsinlearningEnglishbyreading.Thisiscaninspirethestudents’interestsinlearningEnglishintherightway.NecessityofreadingWearelivingatatimewheneverythingisundergoingglobalizationandmodernizationandinformationisbeingsharedwithintheglobalvillageoftheworld.ChinahasjoinedtheWTOandnowhasaccesstomarketsandeconomiesacrosstheworld.Undersuchcircumstances,Englishasatoolofcommunicationhasbeenplayinganeverincreasinglyimportantroleinacquiringculture,scientificandtechnicalknowledge,forcollectingworldwideinformationandcarryingoutinternationalexchangeandcooperation.Inordertocaterforthischallenge,manyEnglishteacherslayspecialstressontrainingstudents’abilityofusinglanguage.Asreadingisthemosteffectivemeansofgettinginformation,thedevelopmentofstudents’abilityskillsisnaturallygivenpriorityto.Andalsoreadingoffersaproductiveapproachtoimprovingvocabularyandwordpower.Unfortunately,thetraditionalmethodsbeingusedinteachingreadingcannotsatisfytheneedofacquiringinformationaswellasenhancingthestudents’readingskills.Toadapttothenewsituation,thelevelofreadingofmiddleschoolstudentss
