HarukiMurakamiMurakamiwasborninKyotoin1949butspentmostofhisyouthinKobe.HisfatherwasthesonofaBuddhistpriest;hismotherwasthedaughterofanOsakamerchant.BothtaughtJapaneseliterature.Sincechildhood,MurakamihasbeenheavilyinfluencedbyWesternculture,particularlyWesternmusicandliterature.HegrewupreadingarangeofworksbyAmericanwriterssuchasKurtVonnegutandRichardBrautigan,andheisoftendistinguishedfromotherJapanesewritersforhisWesterninfluences.MurakamistudiedtheaterartsatWasedaUniversityinTokyo,wherehemethiswife,Yoko.Hisfirstjobwasinarecordstore,whichiswhereoneofhismaincharacters,ToruWatanabefromNorwegianWood,works.Shortlybeforefinishinghisstudies,MurakamiopenedthejazzbarPeterCatinTokyo,whichheranfrom1974until1982.Manyofhisnovelshavemusicalthemesandtitlesreferringtoclassicalmusicforexample,thethreebooksconsistingTheWind-UpBirdChronicle:TheThievingMagpie(afterRossini'sorchestraloverture),BirdasProphet(afterapianopiecebyRobertSchumann),andTheBird-Catcher(aprotagonistinMozart'soperaTheMagicFlute).Someofhisnovelsarenamedaftersongs:Dance,Dance,Dance(fromTheSteveMillerBand),NorwegianWood(aftertheBeatles'song)andSouthoftheBorder,WestoftheSun(thefirstpartbeingthetitleofasongbyNatKingCole).Murakamiisakeenmarathonrunnerandtriathlete,althoughhedidnotstartrunninguntilhewas33yearsold.OnJune23,1996,hecompletedhisfirstultramarathon,a100-kilometerracearoundLakeSaromainHokkaido,Japan.[13]Hediscusseshisrelationshipwithrunninginhis2008workWhatITalkAboutWhenITalkAboutRunning.[14]Hisfirstnovelis《HeartheWindSing》,whichwasthebeginningofhisroadofliterature.《HeartheWindSing》helphimachievedthebestnewartistprizein1979.Murakamibegantowritewhenhewas29.Inthepastsevenyears,hewantedtowritesomethingbutfinallywrotenothing.Theintentionof《HeartheWindSing》isthemomentwhenhewatchedJohnDavidHilton(anathleteofbaseball)hitadoubleinabaseballgame.Murakamisaiditisachancethatsomethingunusualinhishearthasbeentouched.Murakami'sinitialsuccesswith《HeartheWindSing》encouragedhimtocontinuewriting.Ayearlater,hepublished《Pinball》,1973,asequel.In1982,hepublished《AWildSheepChase》,acriticalsuccess.HeartheWindSing,Pinball,1973,andAWildSheepChaseformtheTrilogyoftheRat(asequel,Dance,Dance,Dance,waswrittenlaterbutisnotconsideredpartoftheseries),centeredonthesameunnamednarratorandhisfriend,theRat.ThefirsttwonovelsareunpublishedinEnglishtranslationoutsideofJapan,whereanEnglisheditionwithextensivetranslationnoteswaspublishedaspartofaseriesintendedforEnglishstudents.Murakamiconsidershisfirsttwonovelstobeweak,andwasnoteagertohavethemtranslatedintoEnglish.[18]AWildSheepChasewasThefirstbookwhereIcouldfeelakindofsensation,thejoyoftellingastory.Whenyoureadagoodstory,youjustkeepreading.WhenIwriteagoodstory,Ijustkeepwriting.Murakamihasaspecialanddifferentwayofthinkinginhisnovels,heexpressedwhathewanttosayinaveryspecialway.Mostlyhidinginametaphorofthestory.NorwegianWoodisthemostfamousnovelofhim.Nowlet’sseesomeclassicsentencesofMurakami.Therearethingscanbesavedandcannotbesavedintheworld,timefliesisonecannotbesaved.----SouthoftheBorder,WestoftheSunDeathisnottheoppositeofliving,itwillbeexistforeverasapartofliving.----NorwegianwoodOncewedied,wewillnotlostanythingevermore,that’sbecausethebeginningofdeath.----DancedancedanceIusedtothinkthatpeoplegettingoldstepbystep,that’snotcorrect,thetruthisthatpeoplegettingoldinasecond.----DancedancedanceSoIclosedmylanguage,closedmyheart,heavysadnessissomethingcan’tbetakenbytheformoftears.----Hard-BoiledWonderlandandtheEndoftheWorldLinshaohua,aninterpreterwhohastranslatedmanybooksofMurakamisaid:Ihavetranslated32booksofMurakami,29ofthemhasbeenpublished.Translatingisnotlikewashthedishes,it’sajobIlove.AndwriterslikeMurakamiwhoisfitmytemperandmywayofwritingletmelovemore.Peoplewhocandowhattheywanttodointhisworldwillnotbeverymuch,soIfeelluckyandhappy.
