IELTS-Simon’svideocourseIELTSSpeakingPart2:describeanobjectDescribesomethingthatyouwouldliketoown.Youshouldsaywhatitiswhereyouhaveseenitwhatyouwoulduseitforandexplainwhyyouwouldliketoownthisobject.Here’smyexampledescriptionfromthevideolesson.Ittookmeexactly2minutes,andIfollowedthepointsabove.Note:you’llseethatinparagraphthreeIjumpedtothelastpointbymistake,andthenwentbacktothepointabout“howIwoulduseit”inparagraphfour.Butthisdoesn’taffectthequalityofmyanswer.I’vehighlightedthegoodlanguagethatIthinkanexaminerwouldnotice.I’mgoingtotalkaboutawatchthatIwouldliketoown.It’soneofthesenewsmartwatches,anewtypeofwatchthathasallthefunctionsandfeaturesofasmartphone,ofamobilephone,butofcourseyouwearitonyourwrist,soit’sevenmoreportable.Andthisisanewfashionaccessorythesedays,anewgadget,thatI’veseenadvertisedeverywhere:onbillboardsinthecitycentre,onTVadverts,andI’veseenthesewatchesinperson,in‘reallife’,invariousdepartmentstoresthatI’vebeentowhenoutshopping.AndI’mnotsurewhichbrandIwouldbuy,butI’veseenthevariousbrands,andmaybethemostfamousoneatthemomentistheAppleWatch.ThereasonI’dlikeoneofthesewatchesisbecauseyoucansynchroniseitwithyourcomputerandphone,andsoyou’vegotallyourcontacts,yourphotosandespeciallycalendarnotificationsrightthereonyourwrist,andyou’recarryingitroundwithyou.Ithinkitwouldbeparticularlyconvenientformetobeabletoorganisemylifeusingoneofthesewatches,andcheckmyappointmentsandworkcommitmentsataglance,justlookingatmywrist.Ithinkit’devenbegoodmaybeforhealthreasons,becauseapparentlyyoucantrackyourexercisegoals,eventhingslikethenumberofstepsyou'retakingeveryday.Sothatmightbequiteinteresting.SothereasonthatI’dlikeoneofthesewatches,asIsaid,wouldbethefeaturesandfunctionsthatI’vejustmentioned.Ithinkthesewatchesarereallypractical.It’sjustasgoodasaphoneintermsofthetechnology,butit’sevenmoreportable;reallythey’retheultimateinportabledevices.AndI’mafanofgadgets,andthisonelooksreallystunningtoo.ThosearethereasonswhyIthinkitwouldbenicetohaveone.IELTS-Simon’svideocourseHere’sthesecondquestionfromthevideolesson:Describesomethingoldthatyouownwhichisspecialtoyou.Youshouldsaywhatthispossessionishowlongyouhavehaditwhereitcamefromandexplainwhythispossessionisspecialtoyou.Here’smyexampledescriptionfromthevideolesson.Again,ittookmeexactly2minutes,andIfollowedthepointsabove.I’vehighlightedthelanguagethatIthinkanexaminerwouldlike.NoticethatIgavealongexample,or‘story’inthisdescription(highlightedingreen).Thisstoryhelpedmetokeeptalkingforthefull2minutes.I’mgoingtodescribeanoldwristwatchthatIinheritedfrommygrandfather.Soit’safamilyheirloom,it’sanantiquewatch,andit’sreallyasimple,classicoldwatchwithaleatherstrap,awhiteface,andagoldedgearoundit.AndI’vehaditforthelast10years,Ithinkitis,sincemygrandfathergaveittome.Butit’sbeeninthefamilyforseveralgenerationsbeforethat.Infact,Ithinkitcameoriginallyfrommygreat-grandfather,becausehisnameisengravedonthebackofthewatchface.Soperhapsitwasagiftthathereceivedfromanemployer,orafriend,oranotherfamilymember.We’renotreallysure,buthehaditoriginally,andthenpasseditdowntomygrandfather,andnowit’sobviouslymine.Thereasonit’sspecial,then,isbecauseofthissentimentalvaluethatthiswatchhas.AsIsaid,it’safamilyheirloom,it’sprobablytheonlyantique,reallyoldpossessionthatI’vegotthatremindsmeofmygrandfather,anditbringsbackhappymemories.Forexample,IrememberwhenmygrandfatherwashelpingmetolearntotellthetimewhenIwasachild.Becausehiswatchhadsuchasimple,clearclockface,itwasveryeasyformetounderstandwhathewastalkingabout,whenheshowedmehowthebighandwasfortheminutes,andtheshorter,smallhandonthewatchwasforthehours.SoIrememberhimteachingmetotellthetime,andtestingmewithdifferenttimestoseeifIunderstood.Ialsolikethewatch’sstylish,elegantdesign;it’sverysimple,it’sjustaclassic,timelesslook,andit’sreallydurableandresilient;Ithinkit’ssowell-madethatI’llbeabletohanditdowntothenextgenerationwhenI’molder.Note:Thedescriptionaboveisnottrue.Iinventedittodemonstratetheuseofour‘theme’ideasandourpreparedexample.Finally,noticethatI’mnotworryingabout‘linking’phrasesatall.I’mfocusingonvocabulary:goodideas,andlotsofdetail.
