WhatisAnodizing?Anodizingisanelectrochemicalprocessthatconvertsthemetalsurfaceintoadecorative,durable,corrosion-resistant,anodicoxidefinish.Aluminumisideallysuitedtoanodizing,althoughothernonferrousmetals,suchasmagnesiumandtitanium,alsocanbeanodized.Theanodicoxidestructureoriginatesfromthealuminumsubstrateandiscomposedentirelyofaluminumoxide.Thisaluminumoxideisnotappliedtothesurfacelikepaintorplating,butisfullyintegratedwiththeunderlyingaluminumsubstrate,soitcannotchiporpeel.Ithasahighlyordered,porousstructurethatallowsforsecondaryprocessessuchascoloringandsealing.Anodizingisaccomplishedbyimmersingthealuminumintoanacidelectrolytebathandpassinganelectriccurrentthroughthemedium.Acathodeismountedtotheinsideoftheanodizingtank;thealuminumactsasananode,sothatoxygenionsarereleasedfromtheelectrolytetocombinewiththealuminumatomsatthesurfaceofthepartbeinganodized.Anodizingis,therefore,amatterofhighlycontrolledoxidation—theenhancementofanaturallyoccurringphenomenon.
