SHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLSHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLTABLEOFCONTENTS1.PERSPECTIVES2.TEXT3.SITEPLAN4.ROOFPLAN5.FUNCTIONALDIAGRAMS6.PLANS7.SECTIONS8.ELEVATIONS9.STRUCTURE10.TECHNICALDIAGRAMS11.MODELPHOTOS12.INDEX1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10.11.12.SHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLBIRDEYEVIEWNIGHTTIMEPERSPECTIVE/MAINENTRANCESHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLVIEWOVERPARKSQUARETOWARDSRESTAURANTTOWERSHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLENTRANCELOBBYANDSKYBRIDGESSHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLMAINEXHIBITIONHALLSHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLCONFERENCEAREAANDINNERGARDENSHENYANGCITYPLANINGEXHIBITIONHALLSHENYANGCITYPLANNINGEXHIBITIONHALLInternationalDesignCompetitionDESCRIPTION1.DESIGNIDEAOurprojectisbasedontheideaofseveralfree-formedpavilionsinthepark.Thesepavilionswithdif-ferentkindsoffunctionsareconnectedtoeachotherbycoveredindoorlandscapearea.TheexhibitionHallbuildingoftheShenyangCityPlanningOfficeislikeacityitselfwithmodernpa-vilion-typeofbuildingsandinterestingstreets,squaresandparksinbetween,thuscreatinganunique“ExhibitionParkCity”.ThisprojectanditsarchitecturalformismanifestingtheideaoftheEcologicalGreenCity.Theplanandthearchitectureofthisbuildingaretellingthevisitorsthatdenselypopulatedcities,likeShenyang,cannotsurvivewithoutnature.Themetaphorofthearchitectureisaforest.Visitorsarewalkingonthelargeinteriorlandscapearea,likeinthepark,orintheforestunderthebranchesofbigtrees.Thereisshade,thereiscool,thereisnatureinsidethebuilding,whichisformedbyexhibitionpavilions,aswellascongress-,meeting-,of-fice-andrestaurant-pavilions.2.URBANCONTEXT/MODELCITYFORTHECITYMODELOnecanenterthis“ExhibitionPark”fromeachdirection:fromtheNorth,fromtheWestviapedestriantunnelunderHunheAvenue,fromtheSouth,whichisthemainparkarea,andfromtheEast.Therearetwo“mainstreets”,crossingthroughtheexhibitionbuildingEast-WestandSouth-Northdirection,connectingtheexhibitionbuildingasapartofsurroundingurbanareas.Thegoalofthearchitecthasbeentocreatea“ModelCityfortheCityModel”–theExhibitionCitywithinterestinginteriortoenter,andtoseethecitymodelsandnewdevelopmentplans.Italsowelcomesallyearrounddifferentgroups,likefamilies,teacherswithschoolclasses,etc.toenjoyofmanyotherexhibitions.Therearesouvenirshops,restaurants,cafesforvisitors,likeinanyothercity.Themostimportantinteriorelementisthelargeindoorlandscapearea.Ithasacharacterofwintergardenorcoveredstreetarcade:aglass-coveredgreenhouse,whichispleasant,especiallyinthewintertime,makingthis“ExhibitionCity”attractiveallyearround.Thecompetitionsitehasaveryimportantlocation,whenapproachingthetownfromtheTaoxianAir-port.InordertogivemorepowerandcharactertotheExhibitionHallasaLandmark-buildingonthisbuildingsite,theglassroofhasbeenextendedasalargepergola-typeroofstructure,reachinguptotheredlinesoftheurbanplan.SincethefutureurbanenvironmentofChang-Bai(Hun-Nan)newtownwillbecharacterizedmainlybyhigh-rise,orsuperhigh-risebuildings,inheight100–350meters,theAuthorbelievesthattheLandmark-imagecanbebetterobtainedbyvisuallyandfunctionallyattractivehumanscaleconcept,thantocompetewithheightandunnecessarybuildingfloors.Thatiswhythislargeforest-likeroofandpergola,coveringalmostallbuildingsite,wouldactasanuniquecontrasttofuturehighstructuresaroundit.Situatedonlyabout40–60metersfromHunheAvenue,theExhibitionHallwillbethemostimportantvisualLandmark,bothdayandnight.Indeepermeaning,itwillalsobetheimageandmodelbuildingoftheecologicalandsustainablecitydevelopment.Theroofofthisbuildinghasbeendesignedasa5thelevation:visibleallaroundfromtheupperfloorsofthesurroundinghighbuildings.3.FUNCTIONALCONCEPT/ROTATINGOBSERVATIONBRIDGEThebuildingopensouttothecityandsurroundingstreets,thusinvitingtocomein.TheparkareainawayentersintotheExhibitionbuilding.Therearetwomainentrances:oneintheNorthsidefromtheroad,betweenthesiteand“WomenStreet”,andtheotherintheSouthsidefromthepark.TotheCongressareathereisaseparateen-trancefromtheEastsideofthebuilding.Twomajorfunctionalspacegroups,exhibitionsandconferences,couldbeusedtogetherorseparately.ThemostimportantpartofthisbuildingisthemainExhibitionHallofthelargeShenyangCitymodel.Itissituatedonthegroundfloor,intheNorth-Westcornerofthebuilding.Especiallyintheeveningthiscornerexposesthelightedcitymodeltoallpassers-bycar-driversandpedestrians.Everyone,comingtothelobbyfromthemainentrance,canimmediatelynoticethebigCitymodel.Themodelislocatedontheroundpodium–likeajewel–thusemphazisingitsimportance.Onecanwalkaroundit,orstudythemodelfromtheobservationbridge,onlysomemetersabovethemodel.TheCitymodelobservationbridgeisslowlyrotatingaround,likemanyviewtowersandrestaurantsaroundtheworld.Visitorscansteptotherotatingbridgeatanyplacefromtheroundgalleryaroundthemodel,becausethehandrailofthegalleryisrotatingalongwiththebridge.Thisrotatingbridgeallowsthevisitorstoseeandstudyanypartofthelargemodelataveryclosedistance.Fortheper-sonnelitisofgreatimportancethattheycanmaintain,clean,repair,andupdatethemodeleasily,byusingmorerapidrotationspeedandspecialconstructionofthemaintenanceliftundertheobservationbridge.Onthelevelofobservationbridge,theg
