TheWestLakeLyinginHangzhouCityofZhejiangProvince,theWestLakeisaworldfamoustouristspot.Embracedbygreenhillsonthreesides,thelakecoversanareaof5.6squarekilometersandhasaperimeterof15kilometers.Thewholelakeisdividedinto5sections,namelytheOuterLake,NorthInnerLake,YueLakeandLittleSouthLake,byGuHill,SudiCauseway,BaitiCausewayandRuangongMound.ThenameofWestLakewasfixedasearlyastheTangDynasty(618-907).BeforetheTangDynasty,thelakehadvariousnamessuchasWulinWater,MingshengLake,JinzhongLake,Longchuan,Qianyuan,QiantangLake,andShangLake,etc.IntheSongDynasty(960—1279),theChineserenownedpoetSuDongpowroteapoemtopraisetheWestLakeandcomparedittoXizi,aChineselegendarybeauty.Sincethen,theWestLakehasanotherelegantnameXiziLake.ThebeautyoftheWestLakeliesinitslingeringcharmthatsurvivesthechangeofseasonsinayearandofhoursinaday.Amongitsbeautifulsights,themostfamoussitesaretheTenSightsinWestLakeandtheTenNewSightsinWestLake,whichareknownastheDouble-TenSightsinWestLake.TheTenSightsinWestLakeareMeltingSnowatBrokenBridge(断桥残雪),SpringDawnatSudiCauseway(苏堤春晓),SunsetGlowoverLeifengHill(雷峰夕照),LotusintheBreezeatCrookedCourtyard(曲苑风荷),AutumnMoononCalmLake(平湖秋月),ListeningtoOriolesSingingintheWillows(柳浪闻莺),ViewingFishatFlowersHarbor(花港观鱼),EveningBellatNanpingHill(南屏晚钟),ThreePoolsMirroringtheMoon(三潭印月),andTwinPeaksPiercingtheClouds(双峰插云).TheTenNewSightsinWestLake（1985）areDreamSpringofHupao(虎跑梦泉),Tea-tastingatDragonWell(龙井问茶),GemBathedinFlowingRosyClouds(宝石流霞),HeavenWindoverWushanMountain(吴山天风),ScudoverYuhuang(玉皇飞云),YellowDragonSpittingGreenness(黄龙吐翠),RainsofSweet-scentedOsmanthusOverHills(满陇桂雨),TreesinMistbytheNineRivulets(九溪烟树),RuanMoundinGreen(阮墩环碧),CloudDwellingandBambooPath(云栖竹径).MeltingSnowontheBrokenBridge（断桥残雪）ThoughthenameofthebridgedatesbacktopoemsinTangDynasty,thebridgebecamefamousbecauseofoneofthebest-knownlovestoriesinChinesefolklore.AccordingtothelegendofWhiteSnake,thebeautifulgirlwhowasactuallyawhitesnakemetXuXianonthebridgeintherainandtheyfellinlovewitheachotherandanumbrellatheyusedbecamethesymboloftheirlove.Thebridgewasalsothescenewheretheymadeupafteralongseriesofupsanddowns.Thankstothelovestorybetweenthehumanandtheimmortal,thebrokenbridgeattractsnumerousvisitorsandhasitslegendaryreputationspreadfarandwidealloverChina.Manypeoplebelievethebridgeisthenumberoneplaceforpeopleinlove.AutumnMoonovertheCalmLake（平湖秋月）AtthewesternendofBaiCausewayislocatedalakesideparkwhichhousesastonetabletbearingtheetchedcalligraphyofEmperorKangxioftheQingDynasty,whichreads:AutumnMoononCalmLake.Thelakeisaspecialplacetoappreciatethemoonandtheeffectofmoonlightontheland.Themoonseemsespeciallybrightoverthewaters.Thehillslookpurplishbathedinthemoonlight.ThebesttimefornighttimeviewingisonMid-AutumnDay.LotusintheBreezeatCrookedCourtyard(曲院荷风)ThistypicalWestLakescenehasearneditsfamesincetheSouthernSongDynasty,whenthelakesideareawithanabundantgrowthoflotusoffitsshoreswasknownasCrookedCourtyard,andwasthelocationofabrewery.Peoplesaidthesmelloflotusflowersandwineblendedbythecoollakebreezeswasintoxicating.Thereareplentyoflotusplantsstillbloomoffitsshores.Theystandgracefullyerectinthelake,asiftheyknewtheyhadvisitorscomingtoadmiretheirbeauty.SpringDawnatSuCauseway（苏堤春晓）SuCausewaybecameatouristattractionasearlyas1090.Thatyear,SuDongpo,afamouspoetintheSongDynastyandthegovernorofHangzhou,hadthelakedredged.Thesiltanddebriswerepiledupandformedintoacauseway.Inordertohonorthepoetgovernor,localpeoplenamedtheCausewayafterhim.Today’scausewayistheresultofmanyrefurbishingprojectsovercenturies.RomanticizedasSpringDawnbySuCauseway,thesceneryhasstayedonthetopofthebesttenresortsaroundtheWestLakesincetheSouthernSongDynasty(1127-1279).Whenspringcomes,willowtreesswingslightlyinthebreeze.Peachtreesarefullofblooms,givingoutintoxicatingfragrance.Sixbridgesarethebestplacetoenjoyspringtime.Atdawn,thelakeissoserenethatonlychirpsofbirdscanbeheard.Thelakesurfacemirrorstheskyandbridgereflections.Peachblossomsresemblesmilingfaces.Walkingonthecauseway,onecanlookatthelakeandthesurroundinghills,absorbingallthevisualandauralpleasurescreatedbythebreathtakingpanorama.TwinPeaksPiercingtheClouds(双峰插云)TwinpeaksaretheNorthernPeakandSouthernPeak.OnelocatessouthwesttotheWestLakeandtheotherlocatesnorthwestwest.NorthernPeakiswithanelevationof256.9meters,SouthernPeakiswithanelevationof355meters.Thetwopeaksfaceeachotheratadistanceofmorethan5kilometers.Onadrizzlydayinspringorautumn,visitorsmayfindaspectacularviewofthetwopeakswhiletheylookupfromtheHongchunBridge.Itseemsasifanenchantinglandscapepaintingwashangingbeforethemwiththepeaksdisappearingandappearingamidstdriftingclouds.ThreePoolsMirroringtheMoon（三潭印月）Thereareislandsinthelakeandthreearelakeontheislands.OnthesouthsideofthelargestofthethreemanmadeislandsintheOuterLake,therearethreehollowstonepagodasrisingfromthewater,eachwithfiveopenings.ThethreestonetowerswerefirstbuiltinYuanyou4thyear(1089)oftheSongDynasty,withthewonderfulsceneryofonemoonintheskyhavingthreereflectioninthelake,itisoneofthewonderfulscenesoftheWestLake.ViewingFishatflowerharbor（花港观鱼）FlowerPondParkoc
