:MissionSpecialcharacterContributiontoNewZealand'sidentityandeconomic,socialandculturaldevelopmentResearchethosContributiontothetertiaryeducationsystemasawholeApproachtocollaborationwithothertertiaryorganisationsApproachtogivingeffecttotheprinciplesoftheTreatyofWaitangiApproachtomeetingtheneedsofPacificpeoplesApproachtomeetingtheeducationalneedsoflearnersApproachtoensuringtheorganisationdevelopsandsupportsastaffprofilethatreflectsitsmissionandspecialcharacterGovernanceandmanagementstructureConsultationinpreparationofthecharter1.Mission1.1MasseyUniversityiscommittedtomeetingtheneedsofNewZealandandNewZealanders,enhancingaccesstouniversitystudyfordiversepopulations,preparingstudentsforlife-longlearning,andmeetinginternationalstandardsofexcellenceinresearchandteaching.MasseyUniversityisanintegratedmulti-campusinstitutionofhigherlearningthatcreatesnewknowledgeandunderstanding;synthesises,appliesanddisseminatesknowledge;developsadvancedlearningandscholarlyabilitiesforanationalandinternationalstudentbody;andpromotesfreeandrationalinquiry.Weofferhigh-qualitylearningexperiencesthatempowerpeopleandtheircommunitiestoprosperinanincreasinglyknowledge-dependentandtechnologicallyadvancedworld.1.2MasseyUniversityisdrivenbyaspiritofcommunityrelevanceandengagement,whilemaintainingintellectualindependence.Wewilluseourmulti-campusstructuretomeettheneedsofourconstituentregionalcommunities,whileourflexibledeliveryanddistance(extramural)educationcapabilitiesgiveanationalandinternationalreachtooureducationalprogrammes.1.3MasseyUniversityrecognisesandrespectsthesignificanceofmanawhenuawithinitsregionsandtherangeofMāoriorganisationscontributingtoMāoridevelopmentandadvancement.WehavedemonstratedourcommitmenttoMāoridevelopmentbyprovidingMāoriacademicleadership,researchopportunitiesandeducationalqualificationsthatassistintheachievementofMāoriaspirations.1.4Ourintegratedacademicstructuresandorganisationalarrangementsenableandsupportinterdisciplinaryandcross-disciplinaryresearchandacademicprogrammes.Weprideourselvesontherelevanceofourprogrammes;onouropennesstostudentsofdiversebackgroundsspanningage,geographiclocation,educationalbackground,ethnicityandculture;onthesupportweprovideforourstudents;andontherelationshipwehavebuiltwithouralumni.2.Specialcharacter2.1MasseyUniversitywasformallyconstitutedonthemergeroftwopriorinstitutions-MasseyAgriculturalCollege,focussedonland-basedindustries;andPalmerstonNorthUniversityCollege,establishedtoprovideNewZealand-widedistanceeducation.Theseoriginshaveshapedourdevelopmentandcultureandledtoaninstitutionalethosthatsetsusapartfromotheruniversities.PartofMasseyUniversity’sspecialcharacterisitsresearch-basedandcommunity-focussedapproach.Thisunderlyingproblem-solvingethosdrivesanintegratedapproachfrompureresearchthroughresearchapplicationtocommunitybenefitthatisalsoreflectedintherangeofouracademicprogrammes,flexiblemodesofdelivery,andengagementwithourstakeholders.2.2MasseyUniversityfocusesonresearchofparticularrelevancetotheNewZealandeconomyandsocietyandhasavisionforvalue-addeddevelopmenttogetherwithacommitmenttotheenrichmentofNewZealand'sbiculturalheritageandnationalidentity.MasseyUniversityseeksaninternationalroleandrecognitionthroughresearch,programmeoutreach,andtherecruitmentofanappropriateproportionofinternationalstudents.2.3MasseyUniversity’sdefiningcharacteristicsarereflectedinourcoreareasofacademicfocus,ourorganisation,andourdeliveryofresearchandacademicprogrammes.2.4AcademicSpecialisationsLikeanyuniversity,theintellectualstrengthofouracademicprogrammesisdependentonacommitmenttothefundamentaldisciplinesofthesciences-chemicalsciences,mathematics,physicsandbiology;thehumanities-languagesandliterature,historyandphilosophy;andthesocialandbehaviouralsciences.Alongsidethese,wehavedevelopedacomplementaryportfolioofprofessionalandappliedprogrammeswithastrongemploymentfocus.Ouracademicspecialisationsmaybeclusteredasfollows:Agriculture,VeterinaryandLifeSciences-includingveterinary,agriculturalandhorticulturalsciences,biomedicalsciences,molecularbiosciences,animalsciences;Land,WaterandtheEnvironment-includingsoilandplantsciences,ecologyandconservation,environmentalplanningandmanagement,sustainabledevelopment;IndustrialInnovationthroughEngineeringandTechnology-includingfoodtechnology,biotechnology,productdevelopment,materialsciences,computerscience,informationsciencesandengineering,telecommunications;BusinessandEnterprise-includingmanagement,accountancy,marketing,economicsandfinance,enterprisedevelopment,aviationmanagement;MāoriDevelopment-includingtereoMāori,historyandheritage,Māorieducation,visualarts,health,andwhanaudevelopment;CultureandSociety-includinginternationallanguages,culturalstudies,music,humanitiesandsocialsciences;EducationandHumanServic
