ModiedSteelTube1/4”AcrylicPrismaticRefractorLEDLAMPSleevedJointSleevedJointFireAlarmLuminairePhotovoltaicSwitch250WHPSLampTexturedMTLRefractorTexturedMTL.ReectorSTL.PlatedPaintedWhiteWhereADJtoFixturePerforatedSTL.CoverplateLEDMatrixAssemblySTL.MountingPlateBasePlate/HubWeldedtoPoleandBoltedwithLevelingNutsto15”Dia.BoltCircleTANGGUHIGHSPEEDRAILSTATIONTianjin,ChinaMOVEMENT42Accessandmobilityareessentialelementsofgoodcitybuilding.Theinterconnectionandbalanceofmultiplemodesoftransportationmustbeachievedinordertoprovideaccesstoglobalandregionaleconomies,reducetrafficcongestionandairpollutionandenablehealthylifestylesthatencouragewalking.Strongtransportationlinkstoregionalemploymentcentersandotherpopulardestinationsreduceacommunity’srelianceoncars,which,inturn,reducesimpactsontheenvironment.Ourworkinvolvestheplanning,integrationanddevelopmentofairandrailinfrastructure,streetcar,trolleyandbusnetworks,bikelanesandcomfortstations,andinterconnectedpedestriannetworks.Greatstreetsbalanceallofthesesystemsandservetoestablishsignatureaddresseswithinthecity.Thebestcitiesandneighborhoodsarewalkable,servedbytransitandofferrichsensoryexperiencesforpedestrians.STREETLEVELCONCOURSEHIGHSPEEDRAILLRTTRANSITTANGGUHIGHSPEEDRAILSTATIONTianjin,ChinaChina’spremierhigh-speedraillineiscapableoftravelingupwardsof400kilometersperhouracrossthenortheasternpartofthecountry.Thetrain’sterminalstationwillbelocatedinthenewmixed-useTangguDistrictofTianjinCity,eastofBeijing,whereSOMhasdesignedanintermodalhubtoserveover6,000passengersduringpeakhours.Sitedwithina22-hectarecitypark,therailhubrisesgracefullyamidanetworkofcurvingpedestrianpaths.Thestationisconfiguredtoallowpassengerstomovequicklyandeasilybetweentrainsandintothecity.Alargewaitingroomprovidesviewstotherailplatforms,whileaclearsystemofwalkwaysleadsfromthemainwaitingareaintoamixed-usespacethatcanpotentiallygenerateretailrevenueforthestation.Aseriesofsustainablestrategies—includingaground-sourceheatpump,thermalchimneysandbioswales—havebeenintegratedintothedesignofboththestationandthepark.44Image:SOM|ImageFiction46CHICAGOCENTRALAREAPLANChicago,IllinoisDuringthe1990sand2000s,DowntownChicago,theso-calledCentralArea,sawsignificantnewgrowthinoffice,retail,educationalandresidentialsectors.Muchmoregrowthisprojectedinthecomingdecades.Inresponse,asteeringcommitteeof24businessandcivicleaders,Chicago’sDepartmentsofPlanningandTransportation,andaconsultantteamledbySOMcreatedastirringnewplanforthedowntownarea.Chicagohasalonghistoryofmakingandimplementingplanstoguideitsgrowthanddevelopmentfarintothefuture,andmanyofthecity’smostnotablefeaturesowetheirexistencetopreviousplans.SOM’srecentCentralAreaPlandrawsonthosedeeprootsofvisionarypragmatismandbuildsonavisionofChicagoasaglobalcity,thehuboftheMidwesteconomy,thenexusofseveralmixed-useandresidentialneighborhoodsandthecoreofthegreenestcityinthenation.Theplanfocusesonincreasingdensity,acceptingamixofuses,andstrengtheningtransportationconnections.Guidelinesidentifyrequirementsforhigh-density,mixed-use,infillneighborhoodsthathonorChicago’surbancharacter,enhanceitsgravitationalpullandprovideaframeworktoguideandsupportfuturegrowth.Thisisaplanthatcallsforgrowth,demandsahighqualityofplaceandsupportsahighqualityoflife.STATESTREETRENOVATIONChicago,IllinoisThenine-blockStateStreetRenovationProjectinitiatedtherenaissanceofoneofChicago’smostimportanturbandistricts.Historicallythefocalpointofthecity’smercantiledistrict,StateStreetbegantodeclinefollowingWorldWarII.VarioustaskforcesandcivicgroupsstruggledtodeterminehowtoknitthestreetbackintotheLoop’surbanfabricwhilecreatinganew,pedestrian-friendlyatmospherethatwouldattractbothChicagoansandvisitors.TheChicagoDepartmentofTransportationandtheChicagoDepartmentofPlanningandDevelopment,alongwithotherpublicagencies,retainedSOMtoplanacompleterenovationofthestreet.Meetingswithrepresentativesfromcityagencies,stores,businessesandinstitutionswereheldweekly.Theplanre-integratedthestreetintothesurroundingcitybyrestoringcurbstotheirhistoriclocation,creatingappropriatestreetscapeelementsthatcomplementedthehistoricearly-20thcenturybuildings,improvingthequalityofaccesskioskstotherailtransitlinesbelowthestreetandintroducingsignificantlandscaping.Therenovationwasespeciallyuniqueduetothewidevarietyofusersandadvocatesinvolved,aswellastheremarkablytightdesignandconstructionschedules—approximatelyelevenmonthseach.48CHHATRAPATISHIVAJIAIRPORTINTERNATIONALTERMINALMumbai,IndiaSOMiscurrentlydesigningthenewinternationalterminalatMumbai’sChhatrapatiShivajiInternationalAirport(CSIA),workingdirectlyfortheprivatizationgrouptaskedwiththeairport’sredevelopment.Whenfullybuiltout,thenewterminalwillserveupto40millionpassengersperyear.Theterminalcombinesbothdomesticandinternationaloperations,employinganinnovativesetof“swingfacilities”tooptimizeutilizationoffacilitiesacrossthe24-houroperationalday.Inadditiontoprovidinganumberofstate-of-the-artamenities,theprojectisdesignedtomaximizeflexibilityandprovideforfuturegrowthandexpansion.SOM’suniquedesignrespondsto,andi
