THAMESLANDSCAPESTRATEGYHamptontoKewANNUALREVIEW2007ThamesLandscapeStrategyHamptontoKewAnnualReview20072KEYACHIEVEMENTS2005-2006THEYEARATAGLANCE2007StrategicOverviewandPartnershipThegreateststrengthoftheThamesLandscapeStrategyisthepartnershipofriparianorganisations,localgroupsandfriends.TheThamesLandscapeStrategyworksthroughthepartnershiptoinformstrategicpolicyandtoensurethattheaimsoftheStrategyareimplementedontheground.TheTLShasbeenactivelyinvolvedinthedevelopmentofseveralhighprofilestrategicplansthatimpactontherivercorridor.TheTLSsitsontheWaterFrameworkDirectiveThamesRegionLiaisonPanel,representingthethreesubregionalpartnershipsfortheRiverThamesacrossLondonandthewiderestuary.Inaddition,theTLShasactivelyparticipatedinthedevelopmentofthestrategicfloodriskmanagementplanfortheRiverThamesthroughtheTE2100study.Atalocallevel,theTLShasbeenakeyplayerintheproductionofboththeBrentfordandKingstonAreaActionPlans.TheTLShasensuredthattheprinciplescontainedintheGLAPlanforLondonBlueRibbonAnnexhavebeenincorporatedintotheactionplanstoprotectandstrengthenthewaythatthesetworiversidecommunitieswillmanagetheirriver,boatingheritageandinfrastructureforthenext20years.TheTLScontinuestoprovideadviceandguidancetoarangeofstrategicpartnershipsincludingtheRiverThamesAlliance,TidalThamesHabitatActionGroup,RiverThamesEducationNetworkandtheThamesTidewayStrategicStudy.TheThamesLandscapeStrategy1994reportprovidesavisionfortherivercorridorbetweenHamptonandKew.Throughout2006theTLSpartnershiphasbeenstrengtheningthewaythattheStrategyworkswithinthedevelopmentcontrolprocessinlightofrecentchangestotheplanningprocess.During2006/07theTLShascommentedon21planningapplications.TheThamesLandscapeStrategyinActionThroughout2006/07theTLShascontinuedtofindwaystoimplementtheStrategytoensurethattheThamescorridorisconservedandenhancedforpeopleandwildlife.ThefollowingprojectshavebeeninitiatedbytheTLS:·HurstParkManagementPlan·HamptonCourtApproaches·PuttingtheThamesBackintoKingston·TeddingtonGateway·London’sArcadia·BrentfordandKewRiverside·HamAvenuesRestorationManagementPlan·TLSTowpathManagementPlan·TLSEducationandOutreachProgramme·TLSWaterspaceandVisitorActionPlanEducationandOutreachTheTLShascontinuedtorolloutaneducationandoutreachprogrammetoactivelyencouragemorepeoplefromallbackgroundstoengagewithandlearnabouttheRiverThames.TLSprojectshavefundedover50formaleducationdaysandschoolsoutreacheventsacrosstheTLSregionandaHeritageEducationOfficerposthasbeencreatedthroughtheLondon’sArcadiainitiativeinpartnershipwithOrleansHouseGallery.Manyoftheschoolseventshavebeendevelopedtotargethardtoreachgroupsandyoungpeoplefromareasofdeprivation.ThamesLandscapeStrategyHamptontoKewAnnualReview20073THEYEARATAGLANCE2007VolunteerActionMorethan16,200volunteerhourswererecordedthroughouttheyear.Workincludedforeshoreclearances,towpathclean-ups,biodiversityenhancementworks,treeplanting,scrubbashingandcontrolofinvasivespecies.TheTLShasworkedcloselywithanumberofkeyorganisationsfromacrosstheregion,particularlythroughLondon’sArcadiatoachievethissuccess.BiodiversityActionPlansInJanuary2007theTLSjoinedtheLondonBiodiversityPartnership.TheStrategyalsositsontheTidalThamesHabitatActionPlan,theHounslowandRichmondTidalThamesHabitatActionGroup,theLondonRiversandStreamsHabitatActionGroup,theRichmondBiodiversityPartnershipandtheLondonReedbedHabitatActionGroup.ThroughouttheyearTLSprojectsraisedmorethan£1millionfortheimplementationofbiodiversityactionplansacrosstheTLSregion.Financial&StaffResourcesSince2002TLSprojectshaveraisedover£8milliontoimplementarangeofprojectworkacrossthepartnershiparea.FundingissecuredfortheCo-ordinatorandthecorecoststomanagetheTLSpartnership.FundingfortheProjectDevelopmentOfficerissecureduntilMarch2008.VolunteerscontinuetoplayanimportantroleinthemanagementoftheStrategy.TheLondon’sArcadiaprojectemploystwofulltimeofficersandanadditionalparttimeHeritageEducationOfficerpost.RiversideManagementTheTLSproducesanannualTowpathManagementPlan,whichprovidesaday-to-dayworkprogrammeforthetowpath(andadjacentopenspaces)proposingnewwaystomanagelitter,controlscrub,plantandmanagetrees,cutgrassandmaintaininfrastructureimprovements.Throughout2006/07furtherimprovementswereachievednotablyinthemanagementoflitter–thathasnowseenadropinrecordedrubbishof85%sincethePlanwasstartedin2002.Importantlytheplanincorporatesvolunteeractionalongsidethenormalstatutorycouncilprovisiontoensureaholisticapproachcanbeachievedandresourcesmaximised.MediaCoverage·ImprovedTLSwebsite·74localpressarticles·16nationalpressarticles·38specialistpublicationarticles·16internationalpressarticles·2radiointerviews·1televisionnewsitem·12ArcadianDiariesRiverUse,Recreation,Events&LecturesOverthecourseoftheyeartheTLShasparticipatedat17events,given32lecturestolocal,nationalandinternationalaudiencesand,led30guidedwalksalongtheriver.OfnotewasthefirstKingstonFestivaloftheRiverandthecontinuingsuccessoftheTeddingtonRiverFestival.InMarch,fournewTLSWalkingleafletswerepublished.AttheTLSAnnualMeetingheldatHamptonCourtPalacethenewiconicTLSmapwaslaunchedbyKim
