GeneralCertificateofEducation(International)SyllabusAdvancedLevelandAdvancedSubsidiaryLevelPHYSICS9702ForexaminationinJuneandNovember2009CIEprovidessyllabuses,pastpapers,examinerreports,markschemesandmoreontheinternet.Wealsoofferteacherprofessionaldevelopmentformanysyllabuses.Learnmoreat:•totakeallAdvancedLevelcomponentsinthesameexaminationsessionleadingtothefullALevel;•tofollowastagedassessmentroutetotheAdvancedLevelbytakingtheAdvancedSubsidiary(AS)qualificationinanearlierexaminationsession.Subjecttosatisfactoryperformancesuchcandidatesarethenonlyrequiredtotakethefinalpartoftheassessment(referredtointhissyllabusasA2)leadingtothefullALevel;•totaketheAdvancedSubsidiary(AS)qualificationonly.AIMSThesearenotlistedinorderofpriority.Theaimsofacoursebasedonthissyllabusshouldbeto:1.provide,throughwell-designedstudiesofexperimentalandpracticalscience,aworthwhileeducationalexperienceforallstudents,whetherornottheygoontostudysciencebeyondthisleveland,inparticular,toenablethemtoacquiresufficientunderstandingandknowledgeto1.1becomeconfidentcitizensinatechnologicalworldandabletotakeordevelopaninformedinterestinmattersofscientificimport;1.2recognisetheusefulness,andlimitations,ofscientificmethodandtoappreciateitsapplicabilityinotherdisciplinesandineverydaylife;1.3besuitablypreparedforstudiesbeyondALevelinPhysics,inEngineeringorinPhysics-dependentvocationalcourses.2.developabilitiesandskillsthat2.1arerelevanttothestudyandpracticeofscience;2.2areusefulineverydaylife;2.3encourageefficientandsafepractice;2.4encourageeffectivecommunication.3.developattitudesrelevanttosciencesuchas3.1concernforaccuracyandprecision;3.2objectivity;3.3integrity;3.4theskillsofenquiry;3.5initiative;3.6inventiveness.4.stimulateinterestin,andcarefor,theenvironmentinrelationtotheenvironmentalimpactofPhysicsanditsapplications.5.promoteanawareness5.1thatthestudyandpracticeofPhysicsareco-operativeandcumulativeactivities,andaresubjecttosocial,economic,technological,ethicalandculturalinfluencesandlimitations;5.2thattheimplicationsofPhysicsmaybebothbeneficialanddetrimentaltotheindividual,thecommunityandtheenvironment;5.3oftheimportanceoftheuseofITforcommunication,asanaidtoexperimentsandasatoolfortheinterpretationofexperimentalandtheoreticalresults.6.stimulatestudentsandcreateasustainedinterestinPhysicssothatthestudyofthesubjectisenjoyableandsatisfying.PHYSICS9702A/ASLEVEL20092ASSESSMENTOBJECTIVESTheassessmentobjectiveslistedbelowreflectthosepartsoftheAimswhichwillbeassessedintheexamination.AKnowledgewithunderstandingCandidatesshouldbeabletodemonstrateknowledgeandunderstandinginrelationto:1.scientificphenomena,facts,laws,definitions,concepts,theories;2.scientificvocabulary,terminology,conventions(includingsymbols,quantitiesandunits);3.scientificinstrumentsandapparatus,includingtechniquesofoperationandaspectsofsafety;4.scientificquantitiesandtheirdetermination;5.scientificandtechnologicalapplicationswiththeirsocial,economicandenvironmentalimplications.Thesyllabuscontentdefinesthefactualknowledgethatcandidatesmayberequiredtorecallandexplain.Questionstestingtheseobjectiveswilloftenbeginwithoneofthefollowingwords:define,state,describe,orexplain.(Seetheglossaryofterms.)BHandling,applyingandevaluatinginformationCandidatesshouldbeable—inwordsorbyusingwritten,symbolic,graphicalandnumericalformsofpresentation—to:1.locate,select,organiseandpresentinformationfromavarietyofsources;2.translateinformationfromoneformtoanother;3.manipulatenumericalandotherdata;4.useinformationtoidentifypatterns,reporttrends,drawinferencesandreportconclusions;5.presentreasonedexplanationsforphenomena,patternsandrelationships;6.makepredictionsandputforwardhypotheses;7.applyknowledge,includingprinciples,tonovelsituations;8.evaluateinformationandhypotheses;9.demonstrateanawarenessofthelimitationsofphysicaltheoriesandmodels.Theseassessmentobjectivescannotbepreciselyspecifiedinthesyllabuscontentbecausequestionstestingsuchskillsmaybebasedoninformationwhichisunfamiliartothecandidate.Inansweringsuchquestions,candidatesarerequiredtouseprinciplesandconceptswhicharewithinthesyllabusandapplytheminalogical,reasonedordeductivemannertoanovelsituation.Questionstestingtheseobjectiveswilloftenbeginwithoneofthefollowingwords:predict,
