DavidHerbertLawrence1885-1930By景柯沥Womeninlovewrittenby-D.H.LawrenceIntroductionD.H.Lawrenceisoneofthe20thcentury’smostprominentwriters,novelist,playwright,poetandartist,hisimpactonthewaywethinkaboutlove,sex,andculturaldecayhasbeenverydeep.HisnovelsandpoetryexplorethesocialillscreatedbytheIndustrialRevolutionandtheroleofsexualityinhumanrelationships.Thedialectic(辩证法)betweenmenandwomenisachiefthemeinLawrence’swork.DavidHerbert(D.H.)Lawrence,whosefictionhashadaprofoundinfluenceontwentieth-centuryliterature.Hisfatherwasanilliteratecoalminer,hismotheragenteelschoolteacherdeterminedtoliftherchildrenoutoftheworkingclass.Hisparents'unhappymarriageandhismother'sstrongemotionalclaimsonhersonlaterbecamethebasisforLawrence'sSonsandLovers(1913),oneofthemostimportantautobiographicalnovelsofthiscentury.1885—1901AnunremarkablebeginningDavidHerbertLawrencewasborntointheminingtownofEastwoodNottinghamshire(诺丁汉郡(英国的一个郡))in1885.AfterseveralyearsLawrencebeganworkforafactoryinNottinghambuteccentric(反常的)forhislackofworkenthusiasmandhisloveofliterature.1902—1908ThewriterLawrence‘smotherencouragedhimtobecomeapupil-teacheratthelocalschool.In1906hebecomeateacherattheuniversitycollegeNottinghamandspentmuchofhistimewritinginearnest.Itwasatthistimehepublishedhisfirstshortstory.1908-1912LiterarybreakthroughInthesummerof1909,hehadabreakthroughwhenhispoemswerepublishedintheEnglishreview.InJanuary1911,hisfirstnovel,TheWhitePeacockwaspublished.ThenhetraveledaroundGermany,Italy,EnglandandSwitzerland,whileLawrencebecomeincreasinglysuccessfulasawriter.In1913,hepublishedSonsandLovers.In1915,theyearalsosawthepublicationofTherainbow.Reviewsweresavageandhisreputationwasdamaged.Hewassuspiciousofacontroversial(有争议的)writerlivingwithaGermanwifesoclosetothecoast.In1921,hepublishedWomeninLove.AftertravelingthroughsouthernEuropetoSardinia,LawrencewasdeterminedtofulfillhisambitionofmovingtoAmerica.In1928,hisfinalbustofcreativity,hefinishedLadyChatterley'sLover,thenovelcausedasensationandwasbannedinEnglandandtheUnitedStatesuntil1959.1928—1930TheendoftheadventureLawrencewasnolongerwritingfictionandLadyChatterley‘sLoverbeingextensivelypirated(盗版)throughoutEurope.Italsofrustratedhimthatanexhibitionofhispaintingswasseizedbypolice.Hedischargedhimselfshortlyafterwardsandpassedawayaged44inmarch1930inVence(旺斯),SouthofFrance.TheWhitePeacock(1911)TheTrespasser(1912)SonsandLovers(1913)TheRainbow(1915)WomeninLove(1921),Aaron'sRod(1922)Kangaroo(1923)ThePlumedSerpent(1926)LadyChatterley'sLover(1928)Introduction:WomeninLovewaswrittenintheyearsbeforeandduringWorldWarI.Criticizedforitsexplorationofhumansexuality,thenovelisfilledwithsymbolism(象征)andpoetry--andiscompulsively(强制的,性的)entertaining.WomeninLove(1920)isasequeltohisearliernovelTheRainbow(1915),andfollowsthecontinuinglovesandlivesoftheBrangwensisters,GudrunandUrsula.GudrunBrangwen,anartist,pursuedadestructiverelationshipwithGeraldCrich,anindustrialist.LawrencecontraststhispairwiththelovethatdevelopsbetweenUrsulaandRupertBirkin,analienatedintellectualwhoarticulatesmanyopinionsassociatedwiththeauthor.TheemotionalrelationshipsthusestablishedaregivenfurtherdepthandtensionbyanintensepsychologicalandphysicalattractionbetweenGeraldandRupert.ThenovelrangesoverthewholeofBritishsocietybeforethetimeoftheFirstWorldWarandeventuallyendshighupinthesnowsoftheTyroleanAlps.Ursula'scharacterdrawsonLawrence'swifeFrieda,andGudrunonKatherineMansfield,whileRupertBirkinhaselementsofLawrencehimself,andGeraldCrichofMansfield'shusband,JohnMiddletonMurry.AswithmostofLawrence‘sworks,WomeninLovecausedcontroversyoveritssexualsubjectmatter.Oneearlyreviewersaidofit,“Idonotclaimtobealiterarycritic,butIknowdirtwhenIsmellit,andhereisdirtinheaps—festering(溃烂),putridheapswhichsmelltohighHeaven.“Italsolaterstirredcriticismforitsportrayaloflove,denouncedaschauvinistic(沙文主义)andcentereduponthephallusbySimonedeBeauvoirinTheSecondSex.ThecharactersUrsulaBrangwen(厄秀拉·布朗温)Sheisateacher.Sheispurityandhasdiscernment(洞察力).Ursulacomesacrossasadreamerofsorts,aromanticist,whobelievesthatmarriageisprobablytheendofanexperience.RuperBirkin(卢伯特·伯金)Heisateacherandstayedatthesameschool.Heisaintelligentandindifferentman.ButBirkinisalwaysthinkaboutthecontradictivelife.UrsulaandBirkingetmarriedatlastresistedmanybarriersandallkindsofdifficulties.GudrunandUrsulaGudrunBrangwen(戈珍·布朗温)Gudrunisanartistandworkedonsculpturingandthetypeofart.Sheisabeautifulandconfidentgirlbutherinnerworldisindifferentandproud.Gudruninsistsonemustdiscriminatebetweenpeoplewhoareexceptionalandlittlefools,whileUrsulaseemscompelled(强迫)toagreewithher,evenwhenshewasnotinaccordaltogether.GudrunandGeraldGeraldCrich(杰拉德·克里奇)Heiscoal-mine-owning.Heisatoughandrouthlessman.Geraldisalwayspursueprofitswithoutrealemotion.HeisnotdaretofacehimselfandleadtothelaststrawisGudrun'semotionlessandfrigidresponsetoGerald'sdeath.PlotsummaryUrsulaandGudrunBrangwenaretwosisterslivingintheMidlandsofEnglandinthe1910s.Ursulaisateacher,Gudrunanartist.Theymeettwomenwholivenearby,schoolinspectorRupertBirkinandcoal-mineheirGeraldCrich.The
