IntroductionofXi’anJiaotongUniversityXi’anJiaotongUniversityisanational,keyuniversityunderthedirectjurisdictionoftheMinistryofEducation.ItwaslistedinthefirstbatchofkeyuniversitiestobenefitfromProject211andProject985,withthegoalofbecomingaworldclassuniversity.InApril,2000,theoriginalXi’anJiaotongUniversitywasmergedwiththeXi’anMedicalUniversityandShaanxiInstituteofFinanceandEconomicstoformthenewXi’anJiaotongUniversity.Thus,theuniversitybecameacomprehensiveresearchuniversityofferingprogramsin10areas----science,engineering,medicine,economics,management,literature,law,philosophy,educationandart.LocatedinthecityofXi’aninShaanxiProvince,theuniversitycurrentlyhasthreecampuses:theXingqingcampus,theYantacampusandtheQujiangcampus.Itcoversatotalareaof3849.84acres,withatotalconstructionareaof1.7623millionsquaremeters.Amongwhich,the“QianXuesenLibrary”intheXingqingcampusincorporatesnearly40,000squaremeters,accommodating3518readingseats.Thelibraryaccumulativecollectionsinclude4.47millionbooksand10,053newspapersandperiodicals,ofwhich4,089kindsarecurrentperiodicals.Ithasalsointroduced252electronicresourcesfromhomeandabroad.Thedigitalcollectionsinclude28,369electronicperiodicalsinMandarinandforeignlanguages,and107millionelectronicbooks.15kindsareworldfamousperiodicalswithmorethan100yearshistory.Thelibrary’scomputersystemisfullyintegratedwiththecampusnetwork,CERNET,andtheinternet.Bothonandoffcampususerscanaccessthesystemviaremoteterminalorovertheinternet.Theuniversity’scomputernetworkmeetsthehighestinternationalstandards.Studentsarehousedinmoderndormitoriesandmaychoosefromawidevarietyofdishesintheuniversity’sextensivediningfacilities.Theathleticfieldsandplaygroundarefittedwiththelatestmodernequipment.Inaddition,theuniversityalsohasamodernpsychologicalhealtheducationcenterandcounselingcenterthatcaterstostudents.Theuniversityhasafacultyandstaffof5,595,ofwhich2,686arefull-timefaculty,includingover1,500professorsandassociateprofessors.Amongstthefaculty,23areacademiciansoftheChineseAcademyofSciencesandtheChineseAcademyofEngineering,amongwhomtwelvearedoubleemployed,6havegainedthenationalteachingawards,44havebeendesignatedas“ChangJiangScholars”bytheMinistryofEducation,31havebeenhonoredbyNationalScienceFundforDistinguishedYoungScholars,15havebeenrecognizedasnationalexpertswhohavemadeoutstandingcontributionstothenation,15havebeenrecognizedastheleaderofProgramforChangjiangScholarsandInnovativeResearchTeaminUniversity,48havebeenintheProgramfor1000-eltieandYoung1000-elite,188havebeenselectedtoparticipateintheMinistryofEducation's“NewCenturyProgramforPromisingYoungTalent,”andtheother544havebeenawardedgovernmentstipendsfortheiroutstandingcontributionstoChina.Theuniversityincludes23schoolsandeightundergraduateresidentialcolleges.Ithasacurrentenrollmentofabout30,000full-timestudents,includingover13,000mastersanddoctoralcandidates.Theuniversityoffers78undergraduatemajors,27first-leveland154second-leveldisciplinedoctorialauthorization,45first-leveldisciplineandsecond-leveldisciplinemasterauthorization,and18professionaldegreeauthorization.Amongthese,8disciplinesaredesignatedasfirst-orderkeydisciplinesbytheChinesegovernment,37disciplinesaredesignatedassecond–orderkeydisciplines,and3subordinatedisciplinesaredesignatedasnationalkeydisciplines.Inaddition,115disciplinesarerecognizedaskeydisciplinesattheprovincialandministeriallevel.Theuniversityhas20researchfacilitiesforpost-doctoralstudents,fivenationalkeylaboratories,fournationalspeciallaboratories,twonationalengineeringresearchcentersand59keyresearchcentersandlaboratoriesattheprovincialandministeriallevel.Sincethefoundation,Xi'anJiaotongUniversity'shasformedasetofgoodtraditions:devotiontolearningmakesthecountrystronger;creationgrowsoutofhardwork;honorrectitudeandrespecttruth;learnteachingrigorously.IthasalsoformedthecharacteroflovingChinaandtheuniversityaswellasbeingmindfulofwhereone'shappinesscomesfrom.Theuniversityinsistsontheschool-runningcharacteristicof“highstartingpoint,profoundfoundation,strictrequirementandfocusingonpractice,”continuallycarvesout,innovatesandtrainspeoplediligently.Theuniversityhaseducatedalargegroupoftalentedindividualsinmanyfields,anditsgraduateshaveachieveddistinctioninallwalksoflife.Inrecentyears,theuniversityhasbeenfollowingapathofactiveexplorationandboldinnovationasitseekstoimplementthenationalreformplanforthecomprehensiverestructuringofhighereducation.Animportantelementofthisreformisthenew“2+4+X”modelforresearchuniversities,amodelwhichemphasizesprovidingthestudentwithasolidfoundationofgeneralknowledge,soundresearchskillsandtheabilitytoinnovate.Thegoalistotransformtheuniversityfromonewhichsimplytransmitsknowledgetoonewhichemphasizesactiveengagementinresearch.In2006,Xi'anJiaotongUniversitytooktheleadamongChineseuniversitieswhenitundertooktheresponsibilityforthecreationofasystemofresidentialcollegesmodeledonthetraditionalChineseacademyoflearning.Thetwincollegesystemisaimedatgivingstudentsthebestpossiblechanceforsuccess.In2007,theuniversityestablishedthe“ZonglianExperime
