TulouI.TheOriginofTulouAsauniqueculture,Tulouhasexistedforalongtime.Thepeoplelivingintheareafacedbothnaturalandhumanthreats.Theyhadtofendoffwildanimalsfromthesurroundingforestaswellastheoccasionalgroupofbandits.Inordertoprotectthemselvesagainstbanditsandwildbeasts,theyusedlocalmaterialstobuildtall,multi-storeycircularearthenbuildingswhereawholefamilyorclancouldlivein.Thesearetheearthtowersthatweseetoday.TheseTuloubuildingsnotonlyarecomfortabledwellings,butalsoMightyFortresses.Today,Tulouhasbecometheworld′sculturalheritage.Longlongago,thepeoplelivingintheareafacedbothnaturalandhumanthreats.Theyhadtofendoffwildanimalsfromthesurroundingforestaswellastheoccasionalgroupofbandits.SotheycreatedTulou.II.TheConstructionofTulouTheconstructionofTulouneedslongtimeandmanypeople.Itisnotveryeasytoconstruct,butthepeoplehereknowthebestwaytofinishthebigtask.Thesebuildingswereconstructedusingfire-resistivematerialandthereforepracticallyimpregnable.Theyarespaciousandtheyaremadeupofdifferentshapeslikesquare,rectangular,semi-circularandround.Iamreallyproudofthepeoplehere.Theworkisdoneverywell.III.FeaturesofTulou1.TheFeaturesofTulou’sStructureThestructureofTulouindicatescultureofChinainmanyways.Tomodernpeople,manythingsarenotfamiliar,solet’swhatisthebeautyofTulou.Thebuildingsthatareroundinshapearethemostfamous.Theydividedintothreeclassesofsizesnamely,small,mediumandbig.Thesmallonesareusually2to3storiestallwithasingleringandhave21to28rooms.Themediumdwellingsareusually3to4storiestallwithalargeinneropenspace,whichcomeinsingleringordoubleringsandcouldcontain30to40rooms.Thelargerroundbuildingsareusually4to5storiestallconsistingofasmanyasthreeringsandcouldhouseabout42to58rooms.Finally,theverysmallroundbuildingshaveabout12to18rooms.Wecanseethemainentrancedoorispaddedwithironsheetandislockedby2horizontalwoodbars.Thewoodenbarsretractintothewallsinordertoopenthedoor.Insidetheentranceisahugecentralcourtyardwhereallthedoorsoftheroomsandinnerwindowsopenfacingit.Normally,theroomsatthegroundlevel,exceptthehallandthestaircases,areusedaskitchensanddiningrooms.Theroomsonthesecondfloorareusedforstorageandthoseonthethirdlevelareusedasbedrooms.2.SomeUsesofTulouLonglongago,thepeoplelivingintheareafacedbothnaturalandhumanthreats.Theyhadtofendoffwildanimalsfromthesurroundingforestaswellastheoccasionalgroupofbandits.SotheycreatedTulou.Theyconstructedsomewatchtowerswhichareperchedonthetopfloorofthebuilding.Whenonebuildingwasbeingattackedthevillagerswouldsoundagongandpeoplefromtheneighboringbuildingswouldcometotherescue.Bythisway,theycantheycanprotectthemselvesverywell.Theearthbuildingswerealsobuiltparticularlystrong.Allthewindowsareverysmallanddonotappearuntilthethirdorfourthfloors.Theentrancegatethestructure'sonlyvulnerablepointisfortifiedwithastoneframe.Asitincorporatesalotofwoodafirewouldbedevastatinghere.Theearthbuildinghasaspecialmechanismtoguardagainstthedanger.Theholesinthewallarelinkedthroughbamboopipestotheentrancegatebelow.Waterispoureddownthechannelsandcomesoutfromabovethegatedownstairs.Thewatermightnotbemuchbutitwouldbeenoughtodampenanyattempttotorchthegate.Thevillagersusedtocheckthepipesregularlytoensuretheyweren'tclogged.Allthesesmethodsconstituteastronghindstopreventthepaceofdanger.IV.TheCultureofTulouThecultureofTolouisanimportantpartofChina,theformationoftheEarthbuildingsamplifythewisdomandcreativenessoftheancestorsoftheHakkassettlersinYongdingCounty.Overalongtime,expertsinmanycountriescometoChinaonlytoseebeautyofTulou.ItreallystrengthensthecommunicationbetweenChinaandothercountries.EverytimewhenIthinkofTulou,Iamproudofit,IamproudofChineseculture.本文由泽华、新华、怀超和菜菜等人于2011年左右在济南大学学习时共同编写,作为大学英语课程的Presentation.新华的家在福建龙岩,他常骑自行车去往土楼游玩,因而有此主题,怀念那段时光!2018年3月18日菜菜于上海同济重新整理
