Businessstrategy:asaplan,strategyrelateshowanorganizationintendstoachieveitsgoals.Asapattern,strategyistherhymeandreasonthatemergesinthecourseofmakingtheendlessdecisionsthatreconciletherealityorganizationsencounterwiththeiraims.Asposition,strategyisthestanceorganizationstake.Asaploy,strategyisaruse-itreliesonsecrecyanddeception:’Letsnotthylefthandknowwhatthyrighthanddoeth’.Asperspective,strategyispartvantagepointandpartviewfromthatvantagepoint,particularlythewaythisviewshapesandguidesdecisionsandactions.Strategicchoicesareconcernedwithdecisionsaboutanorganization’sfuture,howitcangaincompetitiveadvantage,thecoursesofactionitshouldtakeandhowitcanrespondtothemanypressuresandinfluencesfromitsexternalandinternalenvironments.Choicesoccuratdifferentorganizationallevels.Atabusinesslevelorganizationsneedtodecidehowtheycansatisfytheneedsofdifferentcustomersandotherstakeholders.Inturnmanagershavetodecidehowtodeliverstrategiesintermsoftheproductsormarketstheymayretainordevelop.Forexample:InJDwetherspoon,therearealot’sofproblemletthecompanytochangethebusinessstrategy.Fromtheinternalmanagementtotalk,thecompany’sinternalstructurehaschanged.TimMartingaveupday-to-daycontrolin2004tobecomenon-executivechairmanworkingtwodaysaweek.Fromtheexternalenvironmenttotalk.:asthepublicattitudetowardsbingedrinkinghaschangedandcompetitorshadbeendevelopingtheirbusinesses,andthecompany’ssalesandprofitgrowthhavesloweddown.So,thecompanycanidentifytheirstrategicchoice,andthentoselecttheproperbusinessstrategyfortheircompany.Tosumup,Thecompanyneedstoadjustinthesechangesbytransformingtheirbusinessstrategy.Strategycanbedeterminedthroughthestrategicpolicychoice.2.Withreferenceto‘forcesforchange’,explainwhythestrategyofJDWetherspoonchangedovertime.Fromtheexternaldrivingforcestotalk:thesocietydiscouragesbingedrinking.thesupermarketbegintosellingthedrinks.ManycompetitorsaredevelopingtheirbusinessestocompetewithJDWetherspoon.Fromtheinternaltotalk:thecompany’sstocksfellandfallingprofits,Thecompanyexpansionplantofail.TimMartingaveupday-to-daycontrolin2004tobecomenon-executivechairmanworkingtwodaysaweek.Restrainingforces:EmployeesinJDWetherspoonwouldnotliketowitnessthesechangesastheymaybelosttheirjobbecauseofthesechanges.Inadditionto,succeedoverthepastyearsalsohasanegativeinfluenceonthisreform.Accordingtoemployees’angle,theywanttostableworkandregularlypayment,however,thesechangeswillbringsomeuncertainfactorstotheirfuturecareer,maybetheywillbefiredbecausetheycannotfollowthenewdemandsofthecompany.Fromthemanagerviewpoint,theyalsodoubtthatthesechangeswillbringthemmoreprofitsthantheydidbefore.Soallthesefactorsarebecometherestrainingforcestothecompany.Accordingtothe‘forcesforchange’,thecompany’sdrivingforcesapparentlyoutweighitsrestrainingforces,andthebalancearebroken,soJDWetherspoonneedtochangetheirstrategytoadaptthecurrentsituation.3.WhatadvicewouldyougivetothemanagementofJDWetherspoontohelpthemanalyzeachangesituationandtoovercomeanyresistancetochange?JDWetherspooncouldusePESTELanalysistohelpthemanalyzeachangesituation.AccordingtoPESTELanalysis,thecompanycanunderstandtheirenvironmentalinfluencesdeeply.Anditismuchmorehelpfulwhenitisusedtoidentifykeyinfluencesordrivers,whicharetheforcesthataremostlikelytoaffecttheindustrysectoraswholeaswellastheorganizationitself.APESTELanalysiscanbeparticularlyusefulforenterprisesthathavebecometooinward-lookingastheymaybeindangerofforgettingthepowerandeffectofexternalpressuresforchange.Inadditionto,BullockandBatten’sfour-stagemodelalsoveryusefultothecompanyanalyzeachangesituation.Thismodelcanhelpthecompanytolocatewhichstagetheysituatednow.Andtheycantakeproperapproachestocopewithintheirstage.Itcertainlyappearstologicallyandsequentiallydealwiththephasesthatorganizationsmustgothroughtoachievesuccessfulchange.Regardingtoovercomeresistancetochange,Ithinkthecompanyshouldinvolveemployeesintheconsultationprocessasitisdifficultforindividualstoresistchangedecisioninwhichtheyhaveparticipated.Apparently,JDWetherspoonhasalreadydonewellinthispart.SotheyjustneedtocontinueParticipation.Moreover,thecompanyshouldensuremoreeffectivecommunicationwitheveryemployeeatallstagesofchange.Resistancecanbereducedbycommunicatingwithemployeestohelpthemseethelogicofachange.Ifemployeesreceivethefullfactsandclearupanymisunderstandings,theresistancewillsubside.Finally,managerscanofferarangeofsupportiveeffortstoreduceresistance.Thiswaycandecreaseemployees’negativeattitudetowardschangestoalargeextent.
