米歇尔演讲全文今天上午,美国第一夫人米歇尔造访北京大学,并接受北大校长赠书。之后,米歇尔在北大斯坦福中心以“读万卷书不如行万里路”为开场进行了约20分钟的演讲。在米歇尔的演讲中,“留学”成为关键词。她化用中国古语“读万卷书,不如行万里路”,并结合自身经历现身说法,希望让更多青年人拥有留学的机会。视频为凤凰网同步翻译视频,演讲英文全文请见下文:MRS.OBAMA:(Applause.Thankyou.Well,ni-hao.(Laughter.Itissuchapleasureandanhonortobeherewithallofyouatthisgreatuniversity,sothankyousomuchforhavingme.Now,beforeIgetstartedtoday,onbehalfofmyselfandmyhusband,IjustwanttosayafewverybriefwordsaboutMalaysiaAirlinesFlight370.Asmyhusbandhassaid,theUnitedStatesisofferingasmanyresourcesaspossibletoassistinthesearch.Andpleaseknowthatwearekeepingallofthefamiliesandlovedonesofthoseonthisflightinourthoughtsandprayersatthisverydifficulttime.Nowwiththat,IwanttostartbyrecognizingournewAmbassadortoChina,AmbassadorBaucus;PresidentWang;ChairmanZhu;VicePresidentLi;DirectorCueller;ProfessorOi,andtheStanfordCenter;PresidentSextonfromNewYorkUniversity,whichisanexcellentstudyabroadprograminShanghai;andJohnThornton,DirectoroftheGlobalLeadershipProgramatTsinghuaUniversity.Thankyouallforjoiningus.Butmostofall,Iwanttothankallofthestudentswhoareheretoday.AndIparticularlywanttothankEricSchaeferandZhuXuanhaoforthatextraordinaryEnglishandChineseintroduction.ThatwasapowerfulsymbolofeverythingthatIwanttotalkwithyouabouttoday.See,bylearningeachother’slanguages,andbyshowingsuchcuriosityandrespectforeachother’scultures,Mr.SchaferandMs.Zhuandallofyouarebuildingbridgesofunderstandingthatwillleadtosomuchmore.AndI’mheretodaybecauseIknowthatourfuturedependsonconnectionsliketheseamongyoungpeoplelikeyouacrosstheglobe.That’swhywhenmyhusbandandItravelabroad,wedon’tjustvisitpalacesandparliamentsandmeetwithheadsofstate.Wealsocometoschoolslikethisonetomeetwithstudentslikeyou,becausewebelievethatrelationshipsbetweennationsaren’tjustaboutrelationshipsbetweengovernmentsorleaders--they’reaboutrelationshipsbetweenpeople,particularlyyoungpeople.Soweviewstudyabroadprogramsnotjustasaneducationalopportunityforstudents,butalsoasavitalpartofAmerica’sforeignpolicy.Throughthewondersofmoderntechnology,ourworldismoreconnectedthaneverbefore.Ideascancrossoceanswiththeclickofabutton.Companiescandobusinessandcompetewithcompaniesacrosstheglobe.Andwecantext,email,Skypewithpeopleoneverycontinent.Sostudyingabroadisn’tjustafunwaytospendasemester;itisquicklybecomingthekeytosuccessinourglobaleconomy.Becausegettingaheadintoday’sworkplacesisn’tjustaboutgettinggoodgradesortestscoresinschool,whichareimportant.It’salsoabouthavingrealexperiencewiththeworldbeyondyourborders–-experiencewithlanguages,culturesandsocietiesverydifferentfromyourown.Or,astheChinesesayinggoes:“Itisbettertotraveltenthousandmilesthantoreadtenthousandbooks.”Butlet’sbeclear,studyingabroadisaboutsomuchmorethanimprovingyourownfuture.It’salsoaboutshapingthefutureofyourcountriesandoftheworldweallshare.Becausewhenitcomestothedefiningchallengesofourtime-–whetherit’sclimatechangeoreconomicopportunityorthespreadofnuclearweapons--thesearesharedchallenges.Andnoonecountrycanconfrontthemalone.Theonlywayforwardistogether.That’swhyitissoimportantforyoungpeoplelikeyoutoliveandstudyineachother’scountries,becausethat’showyoudevelopthathabitofcooperation.Youdoitbyimmersingyourselfinoneanother’sculture,bylearningeachother’sstories,bygettingpastthestereotypesandmisconceptionsthattoooftendivideus.That’showyoucometounderstandhowmuchweallshare.That’showyourealizethatweallhaveastakeineachother’ssuccess--thatcuresdiscoveredhereinBeijingcouldsavelivesinAmerica,thatcleanenergytechnologiesfromSiliconValleyinCaliforniacouldimprovetheenvironmenthereinChina,thatthearchitectureofanancienttempleinXi’ancouldinspirethedesignofnewbuildingsinDallasorDetroit.Andthat’swhentheconnectionsyoumakeasclassmatesorlabmatescanblossomintosomethingmore.That’swhathappenedwhenAbigailCoplinbecameanAmericanFulbrightScholarhereatPekingUniversity.Sheandhercolleaguespublishedpaperstogetherintopsciencejournals,andtheybuiltresearchpartnershipsthatlastedlongaftertheyreturnedtotheirhomecountries.AndProfessorNiuKefromPekingUniversitywasaFulbrightScholarship--ScholarintheU.S.lastyear,andhereported--andthisisaquotefromhim--hesaid,“ThemostmemorableexperienceswerewithmyAmericanfriends.”Theselastingbondsrepresentthetruevalueofstudyingabroad.AndIamthrilledthatmoreandmorestudentsaregettingthisopportunity.Asyou’veheard,ChinaiscurrentlythefifthmostpopulardestinationforAmericansstudyingabroad,andtoday,thehighestnumberofexchangestudentsintheU.S.arefromChina.Butstill,toomanystudentsneverhavethischance,andsomethatdoarehesitanttotakeit.Theymayfeellikestudyingabroadisonlyforwealthystudentsorstudentsfromcertainkindsofuniversities.Ortheymaythinktothemselves,well,thatsoundsfunbuthowwillitbeusefulinmylife?Andbelieveme,IunderstandwheretheseyoungpeoplearecomingfrombecauseIfeltthesamewaybackwhenIwasincollege.See,Icamefromaworking-classfamily,anditneveroccurredtometostudyabroad--never.Myparentsdidn’tgetachancetoattendcollege,soIwasfocusedongettingintoauniversity,earningmydegreesothatIcouldgetagoodjobtosupportmyselfandhelpmyfamily.AndIknowforalotofyoungpeoplelikemewhoarestrugglingtoaf
