1英语课程标准英文版NewEnglishCurriculumforChinesePrimarySchoolsandJunior/SeniorMiddleSchoolsExperimentalVersiondraftedbytheEducationMinistryofthePRCNoteonthistranslationThisEnglishversionofChina’snewcurriculumforEnglishisintendedforVSOvolunteerswhowouldliketofeelbetterinformedaboutadocumentthatiscentraltoourwork.However,itshouldinnowayberegardedasanofficialtranslation.Infact,itisneitherawordforwordtranslationnorasummary.Theappendixtotheoriginal,whichincludeslistsofspecificlanguageitemstobemastered,hasbeenomitted,ashavesomeleveldescriptorsandsamplelearningactivities.Despitetryingtomakeitmorereadable,thisversionreflectstherepetitivenatureoftheoriginal,withthesamekeywordscroppingupoverandoveragain.Volunteersshouldalsorefertothemoreofficial(butstillnotcompletelyofficial!)translationofthenewEnglishcurriculumspecificallyforseniormiddleschoolsavailablefromtheProgrammeOffice.Anyfeedbackonthisversionwouldbewelcome.TimMartinShaanxiInstituteofEducation,October2005Part1:IntroductionWiththeadventoftheinformationageandtheglobaleconomy,Englishhasbecomeincreasinglyimportant.Englishisthedominantcarrierofinformationandthemostwidelyspokenlanguageintheworld.ManycountrieshavemadeEnglishacornerstoneofqualityeducationwhendevelopingstrategiesforbasiceducation.SinceChina’sreformandopening,thescaleofitsEnglisheducationhascontinuallygrown,attendedbysignificantachievementsinteachingandlearning.However,Englisheducationinitscurrentformisfailingtomeettheneedsofcontemporarysocialandeconomicdevelopment.ThecurrentroundofreformstotheEnglishcurriculumaimtoendthefollowingpractices:lOver-emphasizingthetransmissionandexplanationofknowledgeaboutgrammarandvocabularylNeglectingtodevelopstudents’abilitytouselanguageforrealIntheirplace,thereformsaimtoestablishacurriculumthat:lDevelopsstudents’comprehensivelanguagecompetence2lMotivatesstudents,isrelevanttotheirlifeexperiencesandcognitivelevellPromotestask-basedteachingmethodslInvolvesstudentsinexperiential,practical,participatoryandcooperativelearninglDevelopsstudents’positiveattitudes,thinkingskills,practicalabilities,culturalawarenessandautonomythroughthelanguagelearningprocess1.TheNatureoftheNewCurriculumThenewEnglishcurriculumstrivestoaccomplishfarmorethanjusthelpstudentslearnEnglish.AtonelevellearningEnglishshouldinvolvehelpingstudentstlDevelopacertainlevelofcomprehensivelanguagecompetenceandtheabilitytouselanguageforrealcommunicationlMastercertainbasiclanguageknowledgelMasterlistening,speaking,readingandwritingskillsHowever,atanotherlevelthecurriculumshouldalsoservestudents’all-rounddevelopment,providingthemwithopportunitiestlStrengthentheirinterestinstudyingEnglishlGrowinself-discipline,perseveranceandself-confidencelImprovetheircooperative,investigativeandthinkingabilitieslDeveloptheirmemory,imaginationandcreativitylAdoptgoodstudyhabitsandeffectivelearningstrategieslDevelopasautonomousandlifelonglearnerslBuildmoralintegrityandahealthyoutlookonlifelEstablishbothnationalspiritandanawarenessofandrespectforculturaldifferenceslBroadentheirhorizonsandenrichtheirlifeexperiencelTakepartinculturallifelDevelopasindividuals2.BasicPrinciplesoftheNewCurriculum2.1Thecurriculumpromotesqualityeducation(asopposedtoexam-orientatededucation)andtheall-rounddevelopmentofthestudentsTopromotequalityeducationparticularattentionmustbepaidtlValuingeachstudent’sfeelingslStimulatingstudents’interestinstudyingEnglishlHelpingstudentsgainasenseofachievementandself-confidenceThecurriculummustgobeyonddevelopingstudents’comprehensivelanguagecompetencetoincludeareassuchas:lImprovingstudents’abilitytocontributetoculturalandsociallife3lDevelopingstudents’practicalabilitieslFosteringstudents’creativity2.2Thecurriculumobjectivesareholisticandflexible.ThefundamentalaimofthenewEnglishcurriculumistodevelopstudents’comprehensivelanguagecompetence.Thisaimisbrokendownintofivegeneralobjectives.Theseobjectivesarethendividedintonineabilitylevelswithdescriptorsprovidedforeachlevel.Thefivegeneralobjectivesare:1.LanguageSkills2.LanguageKnowledge3.AttitudestoLearning4.LearningStrategies5.CulturalAwarenessThisdesignallowsstudentstoprogresssystematicallythrougheachlevelwhilstmeetingthefullrangeofthecurriculum’sdemands.2.3StudentsareputatthecentreofthecurriculumandindividualdifferencesarerespectedStudents’mustbeattheheartofthenewcurriculum.Forexample,theirdevelopmentalneedsmustbethecentralconsiderationwhendeveloping:lCurriculumobjectiveslTheteachingandlearningprocesslTheassessmentprocesslTeachingandlearningresourcesWhenimplementingthecurriculumeachstudentmustbeallowedtodevelopindividuallyundertheguidanceoftheteacher:2.4Thecurriculumpromotesactivity-basedmethods,experientialandparticipatorylearningThecurriculumpromotestask-basedlearningwhereby,undertheguidanceoftheteacher,thestudentsgainasenseofachievementbyreachingthegoalsofthetask.Taskcompletionwillinvolvethefollowingtypesoflearning:lSensorylExperientiall‘Handson’/practicallParticipatorylCooperativeInordertoimprovetheirabilitytouselanguageforrealcommunication,studentsshouldalsobeabletlAdjusttheirlearnings
