EmmaWatson’sSpeechattheOneYoungWorldSummit2016Ottawa,Canada28September2016Thankyou.(Laughs.)Twoyearsago,IlaunchedcampaigncalledHeForSheattheUNinNewYork.Iwasverynervousbeforethatspeech.Thenerveswerefollowedbyatremendoushighimmediatelyafterwardsandacrushinglowafewdaysafterthat.Mybesthopesandmyworstfearswereconfirmedallatonce.IhadopenedPandora’sBoxtoastandingovationandalmostsimultaneously,alevelofcritiqueIhadneverexperiencedinmylifeandthebeginningofwhatwouldbecomeaseriesofthreats.Thelasttwoyearshavebeenabaptismoffire,tosaytheleast,whereIlearnedjusthowlittleIknowandalsohowmuch.Itwasmyscaryfirststepasanactivist,awordIneverimaginedthatIwouldusetodescribemyself.So,readingtheapplicationsofactivistswhoapplyhereforOneYoungWorldscholarshipswassurprisingtome.HereIwas,readingthestoriesofpeoplefromnearly200differentcountriesfromaroundtheworldwithexperiencesthatIcouldn’tevenimagine.Imean,Ireallyjust–theyweresooutofthisworldtome.Andyet,theirnoteslooklikemynotes.Thesamethemesemergedoverandoverandoveragain.TherewassomuchoverlapwiththethingsthatIhadbeenthinkingaboutandthatIhadbeenstrugglingwithbecausethetruthis,ithadneverbeenaboutbeinganactivist.Itwasaboutthechoicetomakemyselfvisibleandthechoicesthatyoumadetodothat,too.Apartfromthesignificantprogresstheworldhasmadeinthecauseforequality,thebestthingaboutthelasttwoyearshasbeenthis:findingpeoplefromsuchdisparateexperiencesandcommunitiesthatIfoundthatIhavesomethingincommonwith.Thisisacommunityofartists,spiritualteachers,dreamers,thinkers,doers,whoworktogetherandsupporteachother.Forthefirsttimeinmylife,Ifoundmysisterhood,abrotherhood,whatever,howeveryouwanttodescribeit.Ifoundmytribe.Myhopeforyouwhileyou’rehereisthatyouwillfindsomeofyourtribe,too.Ireallyneededmine.BobbyKennedy,whenhewassenatorforNewYorksaid,“Eachtime,amanorwomanstandsupforanideal,oractstoimprovethelotsofothers,orstrikesoutagainstinjustice,hesendsforthatinyrippleofhope,andcrossingeachotherfromamilliondifferentcentersofenergy,thoseripplesbuildacurrentthatcansweepdownthemightiestwallofoppressionandresistance.”That’swhatwearedoing.We,theentirespectrumofthefeministmovement,arebuildinganunstoppablecurrent,forwhichweneedripplesofhopefromeveryage,race,ability,walkoflife,fromeveryhumanexperience.Ifeelgenderequalityisasimportantasanyoftheothergoalsthatweareheretodiscuss.Andactually,ifanything,itisevenmoreimportantbecauseitintersectswitheverysingleotherissuethatweface.Weallhavefeminineandmasculineenergieswithinus.Andbothforcesneedtobeliftedup,respected.Theyneedtoworktogetherinordertomaketheworldgoround.EachofyouarehereatOneYoungWorldbecauseyoudosomethingimportant.AnditissoexcitingtoseeyouallcometogetherinoneroombecauseOneYoungWorldisn’taboutsayingwhatI,eachofus,individuallycando,butwhatwecando–workingtogether,supporting,andlisteningtoeachother.It’sinthatspiritthatIamdelightedtointroducenineactivistswhoarethefirstrecipientsofaOneYoungWorldscholarshipthatIamveryhonoredtohaveinmyname.Theyareworkingtosecurerealprogresstowardsagender-equalworld,andIhopethattheirstoriesinspireyouasmuchastheyhaveinspiredme.Inamoment,Iamgoingtoaskthemtocomeontothestage,butbeforeIdo,IwanttoofferafewstatementsofmyownthatIhavestruggledwithandIcontinuetostrugglewithonadailybasisbutthatI’vefoundinspiring.Iwanttoaskyoutotakeamoment,youcankeepyoureyesclosedorkeepthemopen,andaskyourselfifthesehaveanytruthforyouinthem.Iamwillingtobeseen.Iamwillingtospeakup.Iamwillingtokeepgoing.Iamwillingtolistentowhatothershavetosay.IamwillingtogoforwardevenwhenIfeelalone.Iamwillingtogotobedeachnightatpeacewithmyself.Iamwillingtobemybiggest,bestest,mostpowerfulself.Thesesevenstatementsscaretheabsoluteshitoutofme.ButIknowthattheyareatthecruxofitall.Attheendoftheday,andwhenallissaidanddone,IknowthatthesearethewaysthatIwanttohavelivedmylife.Iknoweachoneofyouprobablywillhaveencounteredoneofthesestatementsinthelast48hours,andifyouhave,thankyouforbeinghere.Iappreciateit.It’strulyanhonortobeherewithyouall.Thankyou.
