Reviewof‘OliverTwist'OliverTwist,oneofthemostfamousworksofCharlesDickens',whichisanovelreflectingthetragicfactofthelifeinBritainin18thcentury.AfterIreadthenovel,Iwasreallydeeplyimpressed.Ijustcan’timaginethathowcansuchalittleboywhohadalreadysufferedlotsofmiseriesandhardshipsstillremainedpureinbodyandmind?Ithink,theansweristhenatureofgoodness.OliverTwististheheroofthisnovel,heisanorphan,whoseparentshadpassedawaywhenhewasjustachild.ThestoryfollowsOliverasheescapestheworkhouseandrunsawaytoLondon,wherehereceivedaneducationinvillainyfromthecriminalgangofFagin.Then,Oliverwasrescuedbytheinterventionofabenefactor-MrBrownlow-butthemysteriousMonksgetsthegangtokidnaptheboyagain.Oliversufferedenormouspain,suchashunger,thirst,beatingandabuse.WhilereadingthetragicexperiencesofthelittleOliver,Iwasshockedbyhissufferings.Ifeltsympatheticforthepoorboy,andatthesametimeIdetestedtheevilFaginandthebrutalBill.Tomyrelief,aswaswritteninallthebeststories,thegoodnesseventuallyconqueredevilandOliverlivedahappylifeintheend.CharlesDickenssaid:“Lovemakestheworldgoaround.”Thesemeaningfulwordshaveinspiredandwillkeeponinspiringustochantthemelodyofloveandtosaytheprayerofcareforevermore.CharlesDickensbelievesthatgoodnesscanconquereverydifficulty.Forme,thenatureofgoodnessisoneofthemostnecessarycharacterforaperson.Goodnessistohumanswhatwateristofish.Onthecontrary,asthefamoussayinggoes,‘Thefragrancealwaysstaysinthehandthatgivestherose’,hewhoiswithgoodnessundoubtedlyisahappyandusefulperson.Tomydisappointment,nowadayssomepeopleseemtodoubttheexistenceofthegoodnessinhumanity.Theylookdownonpeople’shonestyandkindness,thinkingitfoolishofpeopletobewarm-hearted.Asaresult,theyshownosympathytothosewhoareintroubleandseldomhelpothers.Ontheotherhand,theyattachimportancetomoneyandbenefit,forthem,moneyiseverything.Iftheycannotgetprofitfromshowingtheir‘kindness’,theydrawbackwhenothersarefacedwithtrouble.TheyareoneofthesortsthatIreallydetest.ThosecharitablefiguresthatDickenscreatedinthenovelarereallywhatweneedinlife.Theyshowedloveandcaretoothers,justasthegentlerainfromtheskyfellupontheearth,whichwascarvedintomyheartdeeply.Whensomeonetellsyouhe’sdeceivedyou,forgivehimanyway,whensomeonetellsyouwhathe’sdone,trusthimanyway,andwhenyoufaceadversitieswhilechasingyourdreams,thinkaboutyourbeliefs,thenwhathindersyouwillbecomeapieceofcakeinnotime.Ihope,thenatureofgoodnesswillberooteddeeplyinourheart,ineveryone’sheart,andthenthrive.英译2班周伟文13号
