49SSPC-SP1November1,1982EditorialChangesSeptember1,2000SSPC:TheSocietyforProtectiveCoatingsSURFACEPREPARATIONSPECIFICATIONNO.1SolventCleaning1.Scope1.1Thisspecificationcoverstherequirementsforthesolventcleaningofsteelsurfaces.2.Definition2.1Solventcleaningisamethodforremovingallvisibleoil,grease,soil,drawingandcuttingcompounds,andothersolublecontaminantsfromsteelsurfaces.2.2Itisintendedthatsolventcleaningbeusedpriortotheapplicationofpaintandinconjunctionwithsurfacepreparationmethodsspecifiedfortheremovalofrust,millscale,orpaint.3.SurfacePreparationBeforeandAfterSol-ventCleaning3.1Priortosolventcleaning,removeforeignmatter(otherthangreaseandoil)byoneoracombinationofthefollowing:brushwithstifffiberorwirebrushes,abrade,scrape,orcleanwithsolutionsofappropriatecleaners,providedsuchcleanersarefollowedbyafreshwaterrinse.3.2Aftersolventcleaning,removedirt,dust,andothercontaminantsfromthesurfacepriortopaintapplication.Acceptablemethodsincludebrushing,blowoffwithclean,dryair,orvacuumcleaning.4.MethodsofSolventCleaning4.1Removeheavyoilorgreasefirstbyscraper.Thenremovetheremainingoilorgreasebyanyofthefollowingmethods:4.1.1Wipeorscrubthesurfacewithragsorbrusheswettedwithsolvent.Usecleansolventandcleanragsorbrushesforthefinalwiping.4.1.2Spraythesurfacewithsolvent.Usecleansolventforthefinalspraying.4.1.3Vapordegreaseusingstabilizedchlorinatedhy-drocarbonsolvents.4.1.4Immersecompletelyinatankortanksofsolvent.Forthelastimmersion,usesolventwhichdoesnotcontaindetrimentalamountsofcontaminant.4.1.5Emulsionoralkalinecleanersmaybeusedinplaceofthemethodsdescribed.Aftertreatment,washthesurfacewithfreshwaterorsteamtoremovedetrimentalresidues.4.1.6Steamclean,usingdetergentsorcleanersandfollowbysteamorfreshwaterwashtoremovedetrimentalresidues.5.Inspection5.1Allworkandmaterialssuppliedunderthisspecifi-cationshallbesubjecttotimelyinspectionbythepurchaserorhisauthorizedrepresentative.Thecontractorshallcor-rectsuchworkorreplacesuchmaterialasisfounddefec-tiveunderthisspecification.Incaseofdisputethearbitra-tionorsettlementprocedureestablishedintheprocure-mentdocuments,ifany,shallbefollowed.Ifnoarbitrationorsettlementprocedureisestablished,theprocedurespeci-fiedbytheAmericanArbitrationAssociationshallbeused.5.2Theprocurementdocumentscoveringworkorpurchaseshouldestablishtheresponsibilityfortestingandforanyrequiredaffidavitcertifyingfullcompliancewiththespecification.6.Safety6.1Allsafetyrequirementsstatedinthisspecificationanditscomponentpartsapplyinadditiontoanyapplicablefederal,state,andlocalrulesandrequirements.Theyalsoshallbeinaccordwithinstructionsandrequirementsofinsuranceunderwriters.7.Notes*7.1WhileeveryprecautionistakentoensurethatallinformationfurnishedinSSPCstandardsandspecifica-tionsisasaccurate,complete,andusefulaspossible,SSPCcannotassumeresponsibilitynorincuranyobliga-tionresultingfromtheuseofanymaterials,coatings,ormethodsspecifiedherein,orofthestandarditself.7.2ACommentarySectionisavailableandcontainsadditionalinformationanddatarelativetothisspecification.TheSurfacePreparationCommentary,SSPC-SPCOM,isnotpartofthisspecification.Thetablebelowliststhesubjectsdiscussedrelevanttosolventcleaningandappro-priateCommentarySection.50SSPC-SP1November1,1982EditorialChangesSeptember1,2000SubjectSSPC-SPCOMSectionSolventsandCleaners.................5.1.1through5.1.3SteamCleaning...................................................5.1.4ThresholdLimitValues........................................5.1.5FilmThickness.........................................................10*Notesarenotrequirementsofthisspecification.
