Appreciationof“IWonderedLonelyasaCloud”“IWanderedLonelyasaCloud”waswrittenbyWilliamWordsworth,oneoftherepresentativepoetsoftheearlyromanticism.Thepoemisaboutthebeautyofnature,itcandivideintotwoparts:depictionofsceneryandexpressionofpoetry’semotion.Atthebeginningofthepoem,Wordsworthemploysfigurativelanguagetocomparehimselfasacloud,floatingabovehillsandvalleys,enjoyingfreedombutsufferingfromloneliness.Thenheencounteredafieldofdaffodilsbesidealake.Andthesightofdancingdaffodilsmakeshimdrunk.Inthestanza2,Williamamplifiesthevisualeffectbytheuseofanothersimiletogiveusthesensethatcountlessdaffodilswiththeimageof“stars”twinklinginmilkyway.Figurativelanguagecanevokenotonlythevisualeffectbutalsotheemotionalresponse.Instanza3,poetendowedwavesanddaffodilswithhumanbeing’scharactersbythepoet’ssubtleuseofpersonification.Thesparklingwaves’dancingandthedaffodils’dancingshapeabeautifulpicturescroll.therefore,aswereadthepoem,webecomeawareofthepoet’sdeeplovetowardnaturethroughhislovelyandvividdescriptionaboutnaturalthingswithhisfigurativelanguage.Inlaststanza,itrevealedthatthissensewasonlyamemoryofauthor.Thememoryofbeautifulandspectacularscenerydeeplyetchedinauthor’smindandsoulandwasrootedthereforever.Whenhefeltlonely,sadanddepressed,hethoughtofthedaffodilsandcheeredup.Thispoemcontainsfoursix-linedstanzasofiambictetrametre,withtherimeschemeofababccineachstanza.Itmakesthepoemachievesoundbeautyinadditiontoconveymeaning.(e.g.“cloud”(a),“hills”(b),“crowd”(a),“daffodils”(b),“trees”(c),“breeze”(c)instanza1).What’smore,healsoachievesmusicalqualitybythemanagementofalliteration(e.g.“Besidethelake,beneaththetrees”inline5)andassonance(e.g.“beneaththetreesinline5”and“Theystretchedinnever-endingline”inline9)andconsonance(e.g.“valesandhills”inline2).Whenwereadthepoem“IWonderedLonelyasaCloud”,wecanhaveadifferentsenseateveryturnofhisfeelings.Wesharehismelancholywhenhe“wanderedlonelyasacloud”andhisdelightthemomenthisheart“withpleasurefills”.Theshiftofthepoet’smoodfromsadnesstohappinessmanifeststhetheme---thegreatinfluenceofnatureuponhumanbeing.
