IWanderedLonelyasaCloudByWilliamWordsworth外国语学院2011级3班唐艺嘉21号简介“IWanderedLonelyasaCloud”waswrittenbyWilliamWordsworth,therepresentativepoetoftheearlyromanticism.Asagreatpoetofnature,WilliamWordsworthwasthefirsttofindwordsforthemostelementarysensationsofmanfacetofacewithnaturalphenomena.Thesesensationsareuniversalandoldbut,onceexpressedinhispoetry,becomecharminglybeautifulandnew.Hisdeeplovefornaturerunsthroughshortlyricssuchas“IWanderedLonelyasaCloud”.IntroductionandBackgroundItwaswrittenbyWilliamWordsworth,therepresentativepoetoftheearlyromanticism.Asagreatpoetofnature,WilliamWordsworthwasthefirsttofindwordsforthemostelementarysensationsofmanfacetofacewithnaturalphenomena.Thesesensationsareuniversalandoldbut,onceexpressedinhispoetry,becomecharminglybeautifulandnew.Hisdeeplovefornaturecanbeawardedofthroughhislovelyandvividdescriptionaboutnaturalthingswithhisfigurativelanguage.AvisittoUllswate(阿尔斯沃特湖畔)onApril15,1802byDorothyWordsworth,fromTheGrasmereJournal-Thursday15April,1802.IwanderedlonelyasacloudThatfloatsonhigho’ervalesandhills,WhenallatonceIsawacrowd,Ahostofgoldendaffodils;Besidethelake,beneaththetrees,Flutteringanddancinginthebreeze.独自漫游似浮云,青山翠谷上飘荡;一刹那瞥见一丛丛、一簇簇水仙金黄;树荫下,明湖边,和风吹拂舞翩跹。Wordsworth,inthepoem,employsfigurativelanguagetoevokenotonlythevisualeffectbutalsotheemotionalresponse.e.g.inline1simile→hislonelyandmelancholymoodwiththeimageof“cloud”.Wordsworthgoesfurthertocommunicatehisemotionandmeaningbyhisthoughtfultone.Thechooseoftheword“lonely”in“Iwanderedlonelyasacloud”insteadofotherwordslikecarefree,leisureorjollyconveytousthepoet’sdepressionanddisconsolatenessattheverybeginning.Thepoetmakesgreatuseofthe“music”ofthelanguagetoachievesoundbeautyinadditiontoconveymeaning.Heemploysrhymein“a,b,a,b,c,c”patterntoreceiveemphasisasamusicaleffect.(e.g.“cloud”(a),“hills”(b),“crowd”(a),“daffodils”(b),“trees”(c),“breeze”(c)instanza1).Healsoachievesmusicalqualitybythemanagementofalliteration(e.g.“highandhills”inline2)andassonance(e.g.“beneaththetreesinline5”)andconsonance(e.g.“valesandhills”inline2).ContinuousasthestarsthatshineAndtwinkleonthemilkyway,Theystretchedinnever-endinglineAlongthemarginofabay:TenthousandsawIataglance,Tossingtheirheadsinsprightlydance.Thewavesbesidethemdanced,buttheyOut-didthesparklingwavesinglee:ApoetcouldnotbutbegayInsuchajocundcompany:Igazed-andgazed-butlittlethoughtWhatwealththeshowtomehadbrought.仿佛群星璀璨,沿银河闪霎晶莹;一湾碧波边缘,绵延,望不尽;只见万千无穷,随风偃仰舞兴浓。花边波光潋滟,怎比得繁花似锦;面对如此良伴,诗人怎不欢欣!凝视,凝视,流连不止;殊不知引起悠悠情思;•Thememoryofthedaffodilsisgivenpermanence,particularlythroughcomparisonthestars.Thisisincontrasttothetransitorynatureoflifeexaminedinotherworks.•Inthe3rdstanzathepoetgraduallyshiftshisattentionfromtheouterworldtotheinnerworld.Hecatchessightofdaffodilsstretchingasfarastheeyescanseeandfindshimselfinthemidstofnature,hislonelinessturnsintorelaxationandjoy.Thustheshiftofthepoem’smoodfromsadnesstohappinessmanifeststhetheme---wecometorealizethegreatpowerofnaturethatmayinfluenceourlifedeeplyasrevealedinthepoem.Foroft,whenonmycouchIlieInvacantorinpensivemood,TheyflashuponthatinwardeyeWhichistheblissofsolitude;Andthenmyheartwithpleasurefills,Anddanceswiththedaffodils兀自倚憩息,岑寂,幽然冥想;蓦地花影闪心扉,独处方能神往;衷心喜悦洋溢,伴水仙、舞不息。Wordsworthsimplytellsusofanexperiencehehadandwhatitmeanttohim,andhealsopointsoutthatitisthistypeofexperiencethatyoudon'tknowhowvaluableitwillbetoyouwhenithappens;itislater,afteryouhaveusedthememoryofittocheeryouupmanytimesinyourlifethatyourealizehowmuchitaffectedyou.Inthefinalstanza,thepoetsayshisheart“danceswiththedaffodils.”Thissuggeststheharmonyoftheouterandinnerworlds,revealingthepowerofimagination.Inthispoem,thepoetalsoseekstoexpresshisemotionsbyprovidingthesenseimpressionshehasthroughimagery.Hedepictsapictureinwhich“ahostofgoldendaffodils(visualimagery)flutteringanddancinginthebreeze”(kinaesthetic动感的imagery)sovividlythatitappealsrichlytooursensesandtoourimagination.CompositionandTheme•Itrevisitsthefamiliarsubjectsofnatureandmemory,thistimewithaparticularly(simple)spare,musicaleloquence.•Form:Thefoursix-linestanzasofthispoemfollowaquatrain-couplet(四行诗、双行联韵体)rhymescheme:ABABCC.Eachlineismeterediniambictetrameter(抑扬格四音步).•Plot:thepoet'swanderingandhisdiscoveryofafieldofdaffodilsbyalake,thememoryofwhichpleaseshimandcomfortshimwhenheislonely,bored,orrestless.Thepoemtellsusthattheblisswecanenjoyintherealsenseofthetermifwecanmergeinthenature.Actualcontactwiththedaffodilsisnotthepoint.Onlywhenhereconstructsthemomentwithhis'inwardeye'doesheactuallyfeelpleasurefromtheexperience.Thepoetistrapped.Hecannotfeeltheworlduntilpullsitthroughmemory(time+imagination).Hedoesn't'dancewiththedaffodils'untilheisaloneandcanreflectonthem,andatthismoment,isolatedfromtheactualdaffodils,hereallyonlyreflectsonhimself.InWilliamWordsworth’s“IWanderedLonelyasaCloud”,thedaffodilsbecomemuchmorethanmereflowers.Theyareasymbolofnaturalbeautyand,moreimportantly,symbolizelivingalifeasrichinexperienceandsensationaswouldmakealifeworthliving.诗歌的基调是浪漫的,同时带着浓烈的象征主义色彩。诗人的一生只在自然中找到了寄托。那平静、欢欣的水仙就是诗人自己。这首诗虽然是在咏水仙,但同时也是诗人自己心灵的抒发和感情
