SuzhouYangzhouLianyungang上有天堂，下有苏杭Upabovethereisheaven;downbelowthereareSuzhouandHangzhouSuzhou(Chinese:苏州;SuzhouWu),isamajorcitylocatedinsoutheasternJiangsuProvinceofEastChina,about100kmnorthwestofShanghai.Itisamajoreconomiccentreandfocalpointoftradeandcommerce,andthesecondlargestcityintheprovinceafteritscapitalNanjing.ThecityissituatedonthelowerreachesoftheYangtzeRiverandtheshoresofLakeTaiandbelongstotheYangtzeRiverDeltaregion.Administratively,Suzhouisaprefecture-levelcitywithapopulationof4.33millioninitscityproper,andatotalresidentpopulation(asof2013)of10.58millioninitsadministrativearea.Itsurbanpopulationgrewatanunprecedentedrateof6.5%between2000and2014,whichisthehighestamongcitieswithmorethan5millionpeople.Suzhouwasfoundedin514BC,withanabundantdisplayofrelicsandsitesofhistoricalinterest.Ataround100AD,duringtheEasternHanDynasty,itbecameoneofthetenlargestcitiesintheworldmostlyduetoemigrationfromNorthernChina.Sincethe10th-centurySongDynasty,ithasbeenanimportantcommercialcenterofChina.DuringtheMingandQingDynasty,Suzhouwasanationaleconomic,culturalandcommercialcenter,aswellasthelargestnon-capitalcityintheworld,untilthe1860TaipingRebellion.WhenLiHongzhangandCharlesGeorgeGordonrecapturedthecitythreeyearslater,Shanghaihadalreadytakenitspredominantplaceinthenation.Sincemajoreconomicreformsbeganin1978,Suzhouhasbecomeoneofthefastestgrowingmajorcitiesintheworld,withGDPgrowthratesofabout14%inthepast35years.Withhighlifeexpectancyandpercapitaincomes,Suzhou'sHumanDevelopmentIndexratingsisroughlycomparabletoamoderatelydevelopedcountry,makingitoneofthemosthighlydevelopedandprosperouscitiesinChina.TheHumbleAdministrator'sGarden拙政园LingeringGarden留园LionGroveGarden狮子林CanglangPavilion沧浪亭历代园主:1王献臣2陈之遴与徐灿3叶士宽4吴璥5张之万6张履谦7李经羲LionGroveGardenCanglangPavilionTheCanglangPavilion,LionGroveGarden,HumbleAdministrator'sGardenandLingeringGarden,respectivelyrepresentingthegardenstylesoftheSong,Yuan,Ming,andQingdynasties,arecalledthefourmostfamousgardensinSuzhou(苏州四大园林).Opera:Kunqu(昆曲)originatesintheSuzhouregion,asdoesthemuchlaterSuzhouOpera.Ballad-singing,orSuzhoupingtan,isalocalformofstorytellingthatmixessinging(accompaniedbythepipaandsanxian)withportionsinspokendialect.Suzhouembroidery（苏绣）SuzhouembroiderytogetherwithembroideryofHunan（湘绣）,Sichuan（蜀绣）andGuangdong（粤绣）arecalledastheFourFamousEmbroideries.ThenameBiluochunliterallymeansGreenSnailSpring.Itiscalledsobecauseitisagreenteathatisrolledintoatightspiral,resemblingsnailmeat,andiscroppedearlyspring.
