PSSAMPLEThemagnificentGreatHallofPeoplewhereChinesePeople’sCongress(equivalenttoparliamentinwesternpoliticalsystem)isbasedisthebuildingforthecountry’stop-levelpoliticaldecision-makingprocessesandfortheperformanceofthemostprestigiousinternationalartistsororchestrasliketheJewishviolinistItzhakPerlmanorBerlinPhilharmonicOrchestra.ItwasinthisverybuildingthatadefiningmomentoccurredtomeonDecember19,2003when,attheawardceremonyoftheXXElectronicDesignContest2003,myteammatesandI,representingtheSchoolofInformationEngineeringofBeijingUniversityofXX,wereconferredonthefirstprizeofthecontestandthesystemwedesignedreceivedtheXXnomination,thehighesthonorofthecompetitiontowhichonly19systemsoutatotalof3000wereeligible.Forme,equallymemorablewasthecontestitself,whichledtotheprize.For4daysand3nightsfromSept.15to18,3000teams(eachconsistingof3members)participatedinthecontestinwhicheachteamwasassignedaproject.Everyprojectmustbecompletedwithinthetimelimitandathesissubmitted.Asteamleader,Iorganizedtheworkofourteammethodically.ContinuousthinkingandprogrammingmademeexhaustedbutIcouldnotaffordtogotosleepforevenaminutebecauseanydelaymightcausetheexceedingofthetimelimit.ImanagedtostayawakesimplybycontinuouslydrinkingexceedinglystrongcoffeeandIwassustainedbythepassionforcircuitdesignandthespiritofperseveranceandindefatigability.Iexperiencedseverefrustrationswhenacircuitcouldnotbecloseduporwhenacarefullydesignedcircuitrefusedtoworkaccordingtomyintendedeffects.Butattheendofthecontest,throughconcertedefforts,weturnedoutasystemdesigncharacterizedbynotonlypowerfulfunctionsbutalsoinnovativealgorithms.Asamatteroffact,thiswasnotthesolecontestIparticipatedin.Priortothis,asasophomore,ItookpartintheXXDesignContest2002andwasalsothewinnerofthefirstprize.Thosetwocontestsplayedadeterminantroleinmyundergraduatecareerbecausetheychartedoutthecourseofmyacademicpursuit.Frankly,Iwassomewhatconfusedastowheremyinterestlayasafreshman.Thisresultedinmytemporarydisorientationwhich,combinedwithmal-adaptationtotherigorouscurriculumandchallengingcourseworkandwithengagementinpart-timejobsthatdivertedmuchofmytimeandenergy,ledtomyrelativelylowGPAforthefirstyear.Intakingpartinthecontests,Ifoundmyselffascinatedbycircuitdesignandthisdiscoveryhelpedshapemyobjective—tobecomeanaccomplishedelectricalengineeroraprofessorinelectronics.Withtheformulationofthisobjective,Idoubledmyeffortsandmyacademicrecordsincethesecondyearexhibitedsteadyyetremarkableimprovement,achievingtop-rankingscoresinsuchcorecoursesasElectricalCircuitry,VHDL,DataAcquisitionandProcessing,PrinciplesofCommunication,InformationTheory,MobileCommunication,andDataStructure.IntheexperimentalcourseofDigitalCircuitDesign,Ievenobtained99points,anunprecedentedscoreinthehistoryofourschool.Asmyacademicperformancebecamedistinguished,Istartedtoreceiveaspateofhonorsandscholarships.Iwasawardedthird-classandsecond-classscholarshipsasasophomoreandasajunior.ForthetwofirstprizesthatIreceived,IwasgivenextracreditssothatmyoverallGPAsofarreaches84/100,whichranksmeamongthetop10%inatotalof160studentsinmygrade.Asanengineeringstudent,thecultivationofpracticalabilitiesandproblem-solvingskillsisthemostimportant.Inpreparingforthetwodesigncontests,IwasadmittedintothenewlylaunchedInnovationLaboratoryofourschoolandreceivedintensivetrainingsunderthedirectionofProf.XXandIwasevenappointedasassistantmanagerofthelab.There,bydevotingmyselftodigitalcircuitdesign,IproduceddesignsofalotofsystemsincludingXX,XX,XX,XX,XXandsoon.CurrentlyIamleaningtodesignembeddedsystemswithARM(AdvancedRISCMachine)andbusywithcoursesofArtificialIntelligenceandDigitalImageProcessingbecauseIhavebeenenrolledasamemberoftheXXTeamandwillparticipateintheXXContestinthecomingJune.Inadditiontoimprovingmyhands-onabilities,Ihavealsoendeavoredtodevelopmyresearchcapability.WithastronginterestinthematchingbetweenAVRmicrocontrollerandAlteraCPLD/FPGA,Iinventedseveraleffectivemethodstocommunicateefficientlybetweenthem.MyresearchfindingsbecamethefoundationformyresearchpaperXX,whichhasbeenacceptedtobepublishedinthe6thIssue(2004)inXX,first-ratescholarlyjournalspecializinginmicrocontrollerandFPGA.MyresearchaptitudeshavebeenevenfurtherdevelopedinmycompletionofabooknamedXX.WithinthreemonthsimmediatelyafterwinningtheXXContest,IwasinvitedbythegeneralrepresentativeofXXCo.inChinatocomposeabookontheintegratedapplicationofmicrocontrollerandCPLD/FPGA.ItisapioneeringworksincealltheexistingliteratureinChinaisonlyconcernedwiththeindividualtreatmentofeachofthem,rarelytouchingontheircombinedapplication.Summarizingmyexperiencesofpreparingforthecontest,Igavethoroughexplanationoftheirapplicationusingsimplelanguageandmorethan100diagramsdesignedbymeansofVisiosoftware.Althoughthetechnologyinvolvedisnotsosophisticated,thebook,scheduledtobepublishedinMay2004byXXUniversityPress,allowslearnerstograsptheintegrationofmicrocontrollerandCPLD/FPGAwithinashorttime.Writtensystematically,thebookhaspermittedmetodevelopmethodicalacademicthinkingandscholarlyproceduresandgivenmeastrongsenseofachievementasanundergraduate.MyadvisorPro
