CELLULARAUTOMATATHEORYANDPHYSICSANewParadigmForTheUnificationofPhysicsTomOstomaandMikeTrushyk48O’HARAPLACE,Brampton,Ontario,L6Y3R8emqg@rogerswave.caJuly7,1999ACKNOWLEGMENTSWewishtothankR.Mongrain(P.Eng.)forhisencouragement,constructivecriticisms,andforthelengthyconversationsonthenatureofspace,time,light,matter,andCAtheory.2ABSTRACTAnewparadigmfortheunificationofphysicsisdescribed.ItiscalledCellularAutomata(CA)theory(ref.2,4&6),whichisthemostmassivelyparallelcomputermodelcurrentlyknowntoscience.Wemaintainthatatthetiniestdistanceandtimescalestheuniverseiscompletelydeterministic,andutterlysimple.OuruniverseisaCellularAutomatonconsistingofahugearrayofcellscapableofstoringnumericinformation.Thesecellsformavast,3D‘geometric’CA,whereeachcellhas26surroundingneighboringcellsthatinfluencethestateofagivencell.Onesetofcommonmathematicalrulesexistsforeachgivencell,andtherulesareappliedtotheinputsofthenumericstateofthecell’simmediate26neighborsandonthenumericstateofthecellitself.Theresultofthis‘computation’isthenstoredbackinthecellonthenext‘clockcycle’.Inthisway,allthecellsareupdatedsimultaneously,everywhere(notinthecontextofourmeasureoftime)Thisprocessrepeatsitselfforallcells,andforeachandevery‘clockcycle’.TheCAstructureautomaticallyhasabuilt-in,low-levelspaceandtimeintheformofcellsand‘clockcycles’.Thiscanbethoughtofasaspecialkindofabsoluteandquantized3Dspace,andseparate,quantizedabsolutetime.Low-levelspaceandtimeunitsaretotallyinaccessibletodirectmeasurement,andareindependentoftheusual4Drelativisticspace-timeunits(whichcanbeaffectedbymotionandbygravitationalfields).HerewereconciletheknownrelativenatureofEinstein’s4Dspace-timeofspecialandgeneralrelativitywiththeabsolutenatureofthequantized3DCAspaceandquantized,timeofthecellularautomaton.CAtheorydirectlyimpliesthatallthelawsofphysicsmustresultfrominteractionsthatarestrictlylocal,thereforeforbiddinganyformofactionatadistance.CAtheorysuggeststhatspace,time,matter,energy,andmotionareallthesamething:theendresultofinformationchangingstateintheCA.Matterinmotionisanillusionresultingfromthe‘shifting’ofstableparticle-likeinformationpatternsfromcelltocellinlow-level3DCAspace.TheCAmodelautomaticallycontainsaninherentmaximumspeedlimitforwhichinformationcanbemovedfromplacetoplace.AttheCAlevelwecanrepresentCAlow-levelspaceasarectangulararrayofintegersorcells;Ci,j,kwithrespecttoanarbitrarycellthatactsliketheorigin.TheentirearrayofnumbersisupdatedateverynewCA’clockcycle’Δt,whereNΔtisthemeasureofthenumberofCAlow-leveltimeperiodselapsedbetweentwoevents.The26inputssurroundingagivencellCi,j,kacttomodifythestateofthecellatthenext‘clockcycle’accordingtoafixed(possiblyinteger)functionoralgorithmFactingonthe27inputs(andonthestateofthecellitself)asfollows:Ci,j,k=FCi+x,j+y,k+z;wherex,y,ztakeonallcombinationsof-1,0,and1.CAlow-levelspaceortimearenotaffectedbyanyphysicalinteractions,andareinaccessiblebydirectmeasurement.Weproposethatlight(photon)motionisthefixed,simpleshiftingofaphotoninformationpatternfromcelltoadjacentcellatevery‘clockcycle’.Thusphotons‘travel’onlyatonefixedspeed,whichisunaffectedbyanypossiblesourcemotion.ByadoptingabsoluteCAspaceandtimecoordinatesforthedescriptionofapairofobserversininertialreferenceframeswitharelativevelocity‘v’,thentheLorentztransformationfollowsmathematically.Wearguethat4Dflatspace-timeisadirectconsequenceofthebehavioroftheuniversalCA,asseenbyinertialobserverswhoarenotawareof,andcannotaccesstheabsolutelow-levelCAunitsofspaceandtime.Wealsoprovidesomespeculativeargumentsthatmayreconciletheapparentnon-localcharacterofentangledquantumparticleinteractionsinquantumtheory,andthestrictlylocalitythatisrequiredforparticle‘motion’inrelativityandinCAtheory.WeestablishadeepconnectionbetweentheCAmodelandtheexistenceofvirtualparticlesinthequantumvacuum.WefindthattheparticleexchangeparadigmofquantumfieldtheoryisalsomanifestlycompatiblewiththeCAmodel.However,classicalNewtonianinertiaisnotcompatiblewithCA,sinceitisagloballawregardingthepropertyofthetotalmasstoresistbeingaccelerated.WebrieflypresentanewtheoryofinertiabasedonaproposalbyR.Haisch,A.Rueda,andH.Puthoff(ref.5)whichwemodifiedandcalledQuantumInertia(QI).QIisalsomanifestlycompatiblewithCellularAutomatatheory.AccordingtoQI,inertiaisduetothestrictlylocalelectricalforceinteractionsofmatterconsistingofquantumparticleswiththesurroundingelectricallychargedvirtual3particlesofthequantumvacuum.Thesumofallthetinyelectricalforces(fromphotonexchanges)originatingfromeachelectricallychargedparticleinthemasswiththesurroundingelectricallychargedvirtualparticlesofthequantumvacuumisthesourceofthetotalinertialforceopposingacceleratedmotioninNewton’slaw‘F=MA’.QIresolvestheproblemsandparadoxesofacceleratedmotionintroducedinMach’sprinciplebysuggestingthatthestateofaccelerationoftheelectricallychargedvirtualparticlesofthequantumvacuumwithrespecttoamassservesasNewton’sabsolutespace,foracceleratedmotiononly.WehavedevelopedanewquantumtheoryofgravitycalledElectro-MagneticQuantumGravity(EMQG)(ref.1)forthepurposeofunifyingQuantumInertiaandgravityint
