ThebookreviewofGreatExpectationsRecently,IhavefinishedreadingGreatExpectations,whichiswidelyconsideredasthemasterpieceofDickens.ThehistoricbackgroundofthisbookisVictorianPeriodwhichwasthetimewhenBritishwasgovernedbyQueenVictoria.TheheroofthebookisPip,whowaslivinginablacksmithfamily.Someday,hemetMagwitch,whowasaconvict,andhehelpedhim.Toshowhisgratitude,MagwitchgavePipagoodfortuneandPipledatotallydifferentlifeafterhegotthemoney.However,Piplostallofhismoneyandfamebecauseofhisenemies’plotatthelastandbecomeordinarypeopleatthelast.DickensisfamousforhisnovelsuchasGreatExpectations,theTaleofTwoCities,OliverTwistandsoon.Healwayscreatessomepeopleinlowerclassandshowtheirdifferentqualities.InGreatExpectations,hetriedtoshowustheconflictbetweendifferentclassesinVictorianPeriodbytellingusthestoryofPip.AfterPipgotthemoney,helefthisfriendsandfamilytocity,andthenhelearnedtoraisehissocialstate.However,hewasachildborninablacksmithfamilyandthere’sawidegapbetweenhimandtheupperclass.Finally,helostallofhisgreatexpectationsandwentbacktohishometownasordinarypeople.Fortunately,hemethislover,Estella,inSatisHouseandtheylefttheretogetherattheendofthestory.Inthebook,myfavoritecharacterisJoe,Pip’sbrotherinlaw.Hewasablacksmithandbelongedtothelowersocialclass.However,hepossessedsomegoodqualitiesthatmadehimnoble.Forexample,thoughJoedidn’tknowanyword,hethoughthighlyofPipwhenPiptriedtowritehimaletter.What’smore,Pip’ssisteralwaysconsideredPipastheburdenoftheirfamilybutJoealwaysbelievedthathisbrothercanbecomesuccessful.Nomatterhowunkindlyhewastreated,Joewasalwaysfamilytoothers.Undoubtedly,it’sJoe’snoblequalitythatpreventsPipfrombecomingsomeonesnobbish.Inmyopinion,thestoryofPipisreallyattractivewhilethewritingstyleisalsospecial.Forexample,Dickensusedsimileandmetaphorformanytimesinhisbook.WhenJoevisitedPip,DickenswrotethatJoehadtakenhishatasabird’snestwitheggin.Ithinkit’shardtoshowtheinnerworldofcharactersaswellasfeelingbecausethosethingsarereallyabstract.Ontheotherhand,ifwewriteitdirectly,thatmaybeboringandchildish.Andbyusingsimile,Dickenstransformstheabstractfeelingintovisuallanguage,withwhichwecanuseourimaginationtoenjoythestorymuchmoreeasily.IthinkthatwecanalsomakegooduseofDickens’soutstandingskillstoimproveourwriting.Afterreading“GreatExpectations”,manypeoplecomplainedthattheclassdifferencewillalwaysresultintragedyandtheythinkthatweshouldtrytodestroythosebarriers.However,IthinkthemassagethatDickenswantstodeliveristhatweshouldalwaysbefriendly,warm-heartedandoptimistic.Withthesequalities,wecanalwaysleadahappyandcomfortablelifelikeJoeeventhoughwedon’thavemuchmoney.
