PartTwo:ThecomparisonbetweenChineseandAmericanhighereducationsystem.BothinAmericaandChina,themainordinaryhighereducationreferstojuniorcollegebachelor’s,master’sanddoctoraldegreeprogram,butthereexistsgreatdifferenceofhighereducationsystembetweenChinaandAmerica.Thebasiceducation,vocationalandpolytechniceducation,ordinaryhighereducationandadulteducationarefourmajortypesofeducationinChina.WhileinUnitedStates,therearealsofourmajortypesofhighereducationsystem.Theyarethe(1)university,whichmaycontain:(a)severalcollegesforundergraduatestudentsseekingabachelor’s(four-year)degreeand(b)oneormorethebachelor’sdegreetoobtainamaster’soradoctoraldegree;(2)thefour-yearundergraduateinstitution-thecollege-mostofwhicharenotpartofauniversity;(3)thetechnicaltraininginstitution,atwhichhighschoolgraduatesmaytakecoursesrangingfromsixmonthstofouryearsindurationandlearnawidevarietyoftechnicalskills,fromhairstylingthoughbusinessaccountingtocomputerprogramming;and(4)thetwo-year,orcommunitycollegesoruniversities.[1]Americanundergraduatestudentsreceivegeneralisteducation,andgraduatereceiveprofessionaleducation.Whentheyareatthedoctorlevel,allofthemwouldtakeacomprehensiveexamination.Iftheyfailtopasstheexamination,theyaredoomtobewipedout.Accordingtotheresearch,therearenearlyone-thirdstudentsmissthedegree.Bycomparingandanalyzingtheirdifference,wecanbeawareoftheirrespectivemeritsanddrawbacks,andimproveoureducationsystematthesametime.2.1Thecontrastofstudents’admissionsystembetweenChineseandAmericanhighereducationsystem.Thedifferentstudents’electionsystemdecidesdifferentstudents’quality.EachschoolinUnitedStatessettheirownadmissionrequirements.Theacademicsectionisgenerallythemostimportantbutnottheonlydecidingfactor.Ontheotherwayround,theircomprehensivecapabilitiesplayanimportantrole.Moreover,thereisnomuchrestraintofadmissionsystem.Americancollegestudentsarealwayscomposedbyseniorhighschools,socialworkers,unemployedmenandsoonaslongastheycanaffordtuitionsandhandinrequiredapplication.Outofmorethanthreemillionstudentswhograduatefromhighschooleachyear,aboutonemilliongoonforhighereducation.Acollegeataleadinguniversitymightreceiveapplicationsfrom2%ofthesehighschoolgraduates,andthenacceptonlyoneoutofeverytenwhoapply.Theadmissionprocessconsistsofapplicationforms,admissiontestsandessays.Universitiesmakeadmissiondecisionsbasedonacademicachievement,testscoresandapplication.Thesuccessfulapplicantsatcollegesanduniversitiesareunusuallychosenonthebasisof:(a)theirhighschoolrecords;(b)recommendationsfromtheirhighschoolteachers;(c)theimpressiontheymakeduringinterviewsatthecollegeoruniversity;and(d)theirscoresontheScholasticAptitudeTests(SATs)1.(Bytheseapplications,onecanexhibithispotential,communication,individualstyleandotherstrongsuits,andmakecollegesgettoknowcomprehensivelyofstudents.Ofcourse,ifonehavespecialstrongpoint,hemayalsoberecruitedbecauseyouwillpayhonortoyouruniversityorcollege.Forinstance,ifonedoeswellinfootballwhichcanstirsupthemostnationalinterest,hemaybeenrolledwithconditionaladmission.AfactisthatoneofmyfriendswhohasgotAmericancolleges’anduniversities’offerstoldmehissuccessowingtohishumor,pure-heartedness,andhisprominentinter-communication.Asstudyinginaninternationalhighschool,myfriendcultivatesabilitytostudyonhisown,thinkthingsoutforhimself.Duringhisparttime,hehadbeenassumingtutorforforeigners.It’sbecauseallhisachievementsinhighschoolaretakenintoaccount,sohecangotAmericancolleges’anduniversities’offers.Ontheotherhand,inChina,afterstudentsgraduatingfromnationwideseniorhighschools,nearlyallcollegesanduniversitiesrecruitstudentsaccordingtocorrespondingentranceexaminationmarks.TheentranceexaminationisusuallyorganizedonJulyeachyear,andnearlyallhighschoolstudentswouldtaketheexamination.Intheirpointofviews,thechanceofbecomingmembersofuniversityis1英语国家社会与文化入门)totallydeterminedbytheentranceexaminationfinalmarks.Therefore,theannuallyentranceexaminationisusuallyregardedasanexaminationoflifeevenanexaminationoffortune.2.2ThecontrastofsemesterarrangementbetweenChineseandAmericanhighereducationsystem.UndergraduateeducationinUnitedStatesandChinasetfouryearsforundergraduatestudentstostudy,butAmericanhavedifferentsemesterarrangementwithChinese.Somecollegesanduniversitieshavetwosemestersayear,whileothershavefoursemestersayear.Usually,thelengthofasemestermaylast10to16weeks.Astofoursemesterssystem,eachsemesteriscalledQuarterwithapproximatetenweeks.Therefore,thecircleofstudentseducatedtimeisshortened,besides,thereareenoughtimeprovidedforstudentstochoosecurriculatheyinterest.While,nearlyallundergraduateeducationinChinahasquadrennium2foruniversitylife.Still,therearesomespecial,suchasmanymedicalacademiesandsomescientificacademiesarrangefiveorsixyearsforundergraduateeducation.InChina,anacademicyearhavetwosemesterswhicharedividedwithspringandautumn.Thereby,studentswillspendlargenumberoftimeonschoolingandlesstimeallowingthemchoosewhattheyinterest,sayingnothingofpractice.2.3ThecontrastofcurricularandspecialtybetweenChineseandAmericanhighereducationsystem.Differentcurricularands
