Withthedevelopmentofeconomy,oursocietyismovingforwardrapidly,Asweknow,chinahasjoinedWTO,soIthinkEnghishismoreusefulthaneverbefore.Inthe21stcenturymasteringEnglishisthekeytoknowtheworldnow.SoEnglishteachingbecomesmoreandmoreimportant.SotheEnglishteacherisverycriual.Astheoldgoes“theteacheristheengineerofhumanbing’soul”Therefore,whatmakesagoodteacher?andhowtobeagoodteacher?ThesetwoquestionswhichIwillmainlytalkabout.Frist,whatmakesagoodEnghishteacher?ThistitleremindsmeofmyownteacherofEnglishandteacherofChinese.AllthestudentshavetheirteachersofEnglishandChinese.AndIbelievetheybroughtusbothdelightsanddisappointment.So,onlyaccordingtothisexperience,whatweexpectfromourteachersdecideshowbuildsourselvesasteachersinsomedegree.So,whatweexpectfromourlanguageteachers?Capable,humorous,responsible,kindandsoon.However,thesewordscan’tformasystemtojudgeateacher.Firstly,beingagoodlanguageteacher,whatthepremiseisbeingagoodteacher,andthisreferstosomemoralrequirements.ThereisaChinesesayinggoesthat“Teachersareengineersofthesoul.”Thissuggeststhatteachersareresponsibleforourall-rounddevelopment.Asarolemodel,theynotonlycureourheartsbutalsosetexamplesforus.Whenwewerestudents,weexpectourteachershavesomecharacterssuchasfairness,kindness,andsenseofduty.Ateacherwithextremehighlevelofmoralityoftenhasapotentandpositiveeffectonhisstudents,ratherthanthosewithhighteachingstandard.Sometimesjustasentenceaccidentallycomesoutofateacher’smouthmayinfluenceastudent’swholelife.Asalanguageteacher,especially,whenwetalkabout“fairness”,notonlydowerefertobefairtoeverystudentanddon’tisolatesomecertainone,butalsoshouldweproperlyregardtheconflictsbetweendifferentcultures.Eventhoughwehaveourownopinions,judgments,orevendiscrimination,however,avoidingsayingsomeradicalwordsandtreatingculturesequallyisthecorrectway.Inconclusion,aresponsibleteachershouldaimforintegrateddevelopmentofstudents,notonlyinknowledge,skillsandabilities,butalsoinvalues,attitudesandemotions.Secondly,aprofessionallanguageteachershouldbecapableenoughinyourownlanguageabilityandtoinfluencepositivelyonyourstudents.Astoyourself,youshouldobtainthecapabilitytohavelanguageusagewellinhand,andanexcellentcommandofwesternculture.Youcannotbemoreknowledgeableandinformed.Besides,you’dbetterbeversatile,especiallyinthefourskills:listening,speaking,reading,andwriting.Asweallknow,studentsalwaysuseEnglishasatool.So,theutilityfunctionisurgentlyneeded.Andthesefourskillshelptoenhancethefocusonrealisticcommunication,whichisessentialindevelopingstudents’competenceinEnglish.Moreover,agoodlanguageteachershouldbeequippedwithprofessionandarmedwitharangeofskills,strategiesandinformation.Beforeyougiveyourstudentsaglassofwater,youshouldhaveabarrelofit.Youshouldgraspalargescopeofknowledgeoflanguageandtaketheessenceofit,thentransferittoyourstudents.What’smore,you’dbetterletyourstudentsdipintoliteratureworksandtrainthemtohaveawesternwayofthinking,whichencouragethemtoinvolveinthewesternculture.Butthesearenotenough.Youalsoshouldbeskilledinlessonplanningandclassmanagement.Itisessentialtomaketheclasslivelyandtoletallthestudentsengageintheclass.Andtheserequirementsneedyourhighlevelofprofessionandyourownpersonalcharisma.Studentslikehumorousandcharmingteacherswithstrongattraction.Andeveninsomedullacademiccourses,whicharehardtomaketheclasslively,you’dbetterprovidesomejokesrelatedtothecoursetomakestudentsinterested.Finally,Ithinkamoreimportantdutyofateacheristobeaguide,whoprotectsstudents’interestandcultivatetheirself-learningskills.Capableteachersshouldhavetheawarenesstodeveloptheirindependentspirit,whichisalsohelpfultostudents’personallifeandfuture.Agoodteachershouldteachhisorherstudents“howtoteach”ratherthan“givethemfish”.Youhelpthemtodiscovertheirownwaytolearnthelanguage,andleadthemtofindthefittestrulesandpatternsforthemselves.Insteadofwaitingfortheteachertoteachthem,theyshouldbetaughttobeactivetolookforeverychanceinusingEnglish,suchascommunicatewithothers,andspeaktoforeigners.Aboveall,goodteachersshouldbeorganizedandreadyfortheirstudents.Asaleader,ora“consultant”,raisingstudents’interestinlanguageandtrainthemtoowntheindependentlearningskillsisthemostvaluablethingstodo.Ideally,agoodlanguageteachershouldbeexcellentbothinhisorherprofessionalcompetenceandcommunicativecompetence.Astoprofessionalcompetence,weshouldbefamiliartothethreestages:learning,practiceandreflection.Astocommunicativecompetence,weshouldbequalifiedatreallanguageuse.Nowadays,thesignificanceofEnglishisraisedrapidlyandthepaceoftheworldspeedsup,weteachersshouldkeepprocessingtomakeusmoreknowledgeableandprofessional.ThetextbooksaidagoodEnglishteachershouldhaveethicdevotion,certaindesirablepersonalstyles,andmoreimportantly,heorsheshouldhavenecessaryprofessionalqualities.ThesethreeaspectsconstitutetheprofessionalcompetenceofagoodEnglishteacher.ApersonwhohasagoodcommandofEnglishisnotnecessarilyagoodteacherbecauseheorshemighthaveonlyoneoftheelementsofprofessionalcompetence.ItisassumedthatallresponsibleEnglishteachershaveethicdevotion,andtheyaresupposedtomaketheirpersonalstyles
