PS-7300D,ChangeD,Page1DAIMLERCHRYSLERCORPORATIONPROCESSSTANDARDNO:PS-7300DVehicleEngineeringApprovedSourceListRequired:NoChange:DVolume:ASection:2Page:207***KEYDESIGNQUALITYCHARACTERISTICS***1.0GENERAL1.1PurposeoftheStandardThisstandarddefines:-KeyDesignQualityCharacteristics.-InstructionsforidentifyingKeyDesignQualityCharacteristics.-InstructionsforhandlingthePentagonsymbolPwhichisalreadyinplaceonprints,CATIAfiles,PreliminaryProcessSheets(PPS),AutomatedManufacturingPlanningSystem(AMPS),etc.forcarryovercomponents,systems,assemblies,toolsand/orgages.-InstructionsonhowtoplaceDiamondsymbolsonCATIAModels,drawings,EngineeringGraphicOverviews,andAMPS.-ResponsibilitiesforDaimlerChryslerCorporationandSupplierorganizationsregardingDiamondcharacteristics.Thisstandardestablishes:-TheDiamondsymbolbeusedtodesignateKeyDesignQualityCharacteristicsofparts,componentsorassemblies.-AmeansofidentifyingthoseCATIAModels,drawings,EngineeringGraphicOverviews,PreliminaryProcessSheets,andAMPSthatincludeDiamondcharacteristics.-ControlPlans,ortheequivalent,bedevelopedforeachpartcharacteristicdesignatedbyaDiamondsymbolD.-InstructionsforutilizationoftheDiamondsymbolonallnewtool,fixture,andgagedrawings.ThisincludesassociatedproceduresforcharacteristicsrequiringspecialconsiderationduringDesignVerification,ProductionValidation,orRevalidation.ThisstandardalsodocumentsthatPS-8335,thePentagonStandard,hasbeensupercededbyPS-7300.1.2PurposeoftheProcessToestablishthatKeyDesignQualityCharacteristicsaretoleranced,measurablepart,component,assembly,orsystemcharacteristicsthatmaycausefailuretomeetcustomersatisfactionspecificationsduetosusceptibilitytomanufacturing/assemblyand/ortest/fixturevariation,andtherefore,requirespecialattentiontoguaranteeacceptableresults.PS-7300D,ChangeD,Page2TheDiamondsymbolorDisusedtodesignateKeyDesignQualityCharacteristicsandoptionally(iftheEngineeringSourceDocumentshavetheDiamonddesignationlisted)theirsubsequentdownstreamcontrollingprocesscharacteristics.Diamondscanalsobeusedtoidentifymeasurablecharacteristicsinengineeringstandardsthatareissuedtoensuretheproductionprocessproducesafinishedproductthatmeetscustomerrequirementsanddesignspecifications.TheDiamondisintendedtoalertthoseinvolvedinthemanufactureand/orassemblyofproductsthatthedesignatedprocessisaKeyDesignQualityCharacteristicandthatControlPlansorequivalent(StandardWorkInstructions[SWI]orProcessControlCharts)arerequiredtodefineinspectionprocedures.1.3CoverageofthisStandardThisstandarddoesnotapplytocharacteristicsofcomponentsand/orsystemsspecificallycoveredbytheShieldsymbol.2.0APPLICATIONREQUIREMENTSAllnewdesignsshallbeassessedastotheneedforDiamonds.AllcarryoverdesignsshallbereviewedforrelevancyofexistingDiamondsandadditionalneed,ifany.DiamondsareplacedonCATIAmodels,EngineeringGraphicOverviews,drawings,PreliminaryProcessSheets,AMPS,and/orEngineeringStandardstoalertthoseinvolvedinthemanufactureand/orassemblyofproductsthatControlPlanningisrequiredandthatinspectionproceduresaredefinedinaControlPlan(orequivalent).ItismandatorythatthoseDiamondsthataffectDCCvehicleassemblyormanufacturingoperationsshallbeplacedonPreliminaryProcessSheetsandAMPS.ApplicationofaDiamondtoaKeyDesignQualityCharacteristicmandatesthattheinspectionmethod,samplesizeandfrequencybedocumentedinaControlPlanasdefinedbytheProductAssurancePlan(PAP),orequivalenttoaControlPlan.ItdoesnotindicatewhereorhowmeasurementsshouldbemadetodeterminecompliancenordoesitautomaticallyrequiretheuseofStatisticalProcessControl(SPC).TheControlPlanoritsequivalentisthegoverningdocumentastothemethodologyofcomplianceinresponsetoaDiamonddesignation.3.0SELECTIONCRITERIADiamondsshouldbeappliedjudiciouslytotoleranced,measurablecharacteristicsthatwillcauseapartorassemblytofailtomeetcustomersatisfactionspecificationsinthefollowingareasiftolerancesarenotmaintained:-Importantfunctionorappearancefeatures.-Keyfitandfinishcharacteristics-Buzz,squeakandrattleconcerns.-Importantreliabilityconsiderations.-Itemscoveredbyextendedwarrantiesanddurabilitygoals.-ImportantrequirementsdetailedinanEngineeringStandard.ADiamondisappliedtoaspecificdimensionedfeatureorfunctionalrequirementthatistolerancedandmeasurableandinthejudgementoftheProductAssuranceTeam,requiresspecialattentiontoguaranteethatthemanufacturingand/orassemblyprocesseswillproducerequiredfunction/feature.PS-7300D,ChangeD,Page3CharacteristicsshouldnotbedesignatedbyaDiamondexceptwhenspecialattentionisrequiredtoensureconformancetospecifications.Diamondsarenottobeappliedtocompletecomponents,systems,orassembliessincetheDiamonddesignationshallbeameasurableparameter.DiamondsarenottobeappliedtoageneralstatementinanEngineeringStandardortoanentireEngineeringStandard.SelectionofdesigncharacteristicsthatshouldbehighlightedbytheDiamondisanundertakingrequiringathoroughdesignandmanufacturinganalysis.Thisinvolvesparticipationofallthemembersofacrossfunctionalteam(i.e.,theProductAssuranceTeam[PAT]aslistedinSection5.0)whoshouldconsiderusingsomeofthefollowing(butnotlimitedto)methodstoassistintheanal
