Racialdiscrimination,or,thecolorproblem,refersmainlytoNegroesintheUnitedStates,astheyconstituteonetenthofthetotalpopulation.ThetermNegroisappliedtopeopledescendedorpartlydescendedfromslavestransportedfromAfricalongago.ItisnowavoidedbymanywhiteAmericansforfearofoffendingtheirnon-whitebrothers.Theoldtermniggerisnowconsideredtobeinsulting,andisaltogetheravoidedindecentusage.Inofficialstatisticsthetermnon-whiteisused,andinordinarysituationsitisacceptabletocallnon-whitepeopleblack,althoughthistermwasoncealsosomewhatinsulting.Withoutsomereferencetohistoricalback-ground,theNegropositiontodaycouldn'tbeunderstood.Theblackpopulationisabout20million.TheirancestorswerebroughttoAmericaasslavesintheseventeenthandeighteenthcenturies.NearlyalltheirdescendantswerekeptinlegalslaveryintheSouthuntil1865.ThesouthernstatesweredefeatedintheCivilWarandwereforcedtoabolishslaveryandsettheslavesfree.ButthesouthernersweredeterminedtokeeptheNegroesfrombecomingequalinanythingbutconstitutionallaw.TheFederalGovernmenthas,graduallycompelledthewhitemajorityintheSouthtoallowNegroestoenjoycivicrights.Butlegalprotectionhasbeenslowtodevelopandhasnotyetsolvedthesocialproblemofinequalityinvoting,education,employmentandhousing.AgreatleaderDr.MartinLutherKing,anAmericanpoliticalactivistandthemostfamousleaderoftheAmericancivilrightsmovement,wasconsideredapeacemakerthroughouttheworldforhispromotionofnonviolenceandequaltreatmentfordifferentraces.HereceivedtheNobelPeacePrizein1968.Hismostinfluentialandwell-knownspeechistheIHaveaDreamspeech.In1968,Dr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.wasassassinatedwhilehewasleadingaworkers‘strikeinMemphis,Tennessee.Whitepeopleandblackpeoplewhohadworkedsohardforpeaceandcivilrightswereshockedandangry.Theworldgrievedthelossofthismanofpeace.Wewillnotresorttoviolence.Wewillnotdegradeourselveswithhatred.Lovewillnotbereturnedwithhate.——Dr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.Dr.MartinLutherKingDayThirdMondayinJanuaryThankyou
