Racialdiscrimination，or，thecolorproblem，refersmainlytoNegroesintheUnitedStates，astheyconstituteonetenthofthetotalpopulation.ThetermNegroisappliedtopeopledescendedorpartlydescendedfromslavestransportedfromAfricalongago.ItisnowavoidedbymanywhiteAmericansforfearofoffendingtheirnon-whitebrothers.Theoldtermniggerisnowconsideredtobeinsulting，andisaltogetheravoidedindecentusage.Inofficialstatisticsthetermnon-whiteisused，andinordinarysituationsitisacceptabletocallnon-whitepeopleblack，althoughthistermwasoncealsosomewhatinsulting.Withoutsomereferencetohistoricalback-ground，theNegropositiontodaycouldn'tbeunderstood.Theblackpopulationisabout20million.TheirancestorswerebroughttoAmericaasslavesintheseventeenthandeighteenthcenturies.NearlyalltheirdescendantswerekeptinlegalslaveryintheSouthuntil1865.ThesouthernstatesweredefeatedintheCivilWarandwereforcedtoabolishslaveryandsettheslavesfree.ButthesouthernersweredeterminedtokeeptheNegroesfrombecomingequalinanythingbutconstitutionallaw.TheFederalGovernmenthas，graduallycompelledthewhitemajorityintheSouthtoallowNegroestoenjoycivicrights.Butlegalprotectionhasbeenslowtodevelopandhasnotyetsolvedthesocialproblemofinequalityinvoting，education，employmentandhousing.AgreatleaderDr.MartinLutherKing,anAmericanpoliticalactivistandthemostfamousleaderoftheAmericancivilrightsmovement,wasconsideredapeacemakerthroughouttheworldforhispromotionofnonviolenceandequaltreatmentfordifferentraces.HereceivedtheNobelPeacePrizein1968.Hismostinfluentialandwell-knownspeechistheIHaveaDreamspeech.In1968,Dr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.wasassassinatedwhilehewasleadingaworkers‘strikeinMemphis,Tennessee.Whitepeopleandblackpeoplewhohadworkedsohardforpeaceandcivilrightswereshockedandangry.Theworldgrievedthelossofthismanofpeace.Wewillnotresorttoviolence.Wewillnotdegradeourselveswithhatred.Lovewillnotbereturnedwithhate.——Dr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.Dr.MartinLutherKingDayThirdMondayinJanuaryThankyou
