UncleTom'sCabin——StoweHarrietBeecherStoweHarrietBeecherStowe(1811-1896)wasanAmericanauthorandabolitionist,whosenovelUncleTom''sCabin(1852)attackedthecrueltyofslavery;itreachedmillionsasanovelandplay,andbecameinfluentialintheU.S.andBritain.Itmadethepoliticalissuesofthe1850sregardingslaverytangibletomillions,energizinganti-slaveryforcesintheAmericanNorth.ItangeredandembitteredtheSouth.TheimpactissummedupinacommonlyquotedstatementapocryphallyattributedtoAbrahamLincoln.WhenhemetStowe,itisclaimedthathesaid,“Soyou''rethelittlewomanwhowrotethebookthatmadethisgreatwar!“HarietBeecherStowewaspartlyinspiredtocreateUncleTom'sCabinbytheautobiographyofJosiahHenson,ablackmanwholivedandworkedonatobaccoplantationinNorthBethesda,Maryland.Hensonescapedslaveryin1830byfleeingtoCanadawherehehelpedotherfugitiveslavesarriveandbecomeself-sufficient,andwherehewrotehismemoirs.AmericansocialbackgroundStoweeventuallyacknowledgedthatHenson'swritingsinspiredUncleTom'sCabin.WhenStowe'sworkbecameabest-seller,HensonrepublishedhismemoirsasTheMemoirsofUncleTom,andtraveledextensivelyintheUnitedStatesandEurope.Stowe'snovellentitsnametoHenson'shome—UncleTom'sCabinHistoricSite,nearDresden,Ontario—whichsincethe1940shasbeenamuseum.TheactualcabinHensonlivedinwhilehewasaslave,stillexistsinMontgomeryCounty,Maryland.personageintroductionIntegrity,good-natured,religiousUncleTomisapious,trustworthy,slave.Heneverwrongsanyoneandalwaysobeyshismaster.Averyspiritualperson,UncleTomtrieshisbesttoobeytheBibleandtodowhatisright.UncleTomandElizaElizaElizaisabeautifulslaveownedbyGeorgeShelby,Sr.,thesamepersonwhoinitiallyownsTom.Elizahasason,Harry.Eliza'shusband,GeorgeHarris,livesonanearbyplantationStoryintroducesPiousoldUncleTomissoldbyhiswell-intentionedKentucyownerMrShelbyinfinancialstraits.HeisboughtfirstbytheidealisticAugustineStClare.InhisNewOrleanshouse,UncleTommakesfriendswithStClare'sdaughter,thesaintlyLittleEva,andherblackfriend,theimpishTopsy.'Neverwasborn!'persistedTopsy...'neverhadnofather,normother,nornothing'.Iwasraisedbyaspeculator,withlotsofothers.'Evadiesinahighlysentimentaldeathscenefromaweakenedconstitution,andSt.Clareiskilledinanaccident.TomissoldtoSimonLegree,aYankeeandabrutalcottonplantationowner.Twoofhisfemaleslavespretendtoescapeandgointohiding.TomwillnotrevealtheirwhereaboutsandLegreebeatstheunprotestingTomtodeathjustbeforeShelby'ssonarrivestoredeemhim.AparallelplotcenteresonEliza,herchild,andherhusbandGeorgewhoescapetofreedominCanadausingthe'undergroundrailroad.'OtherimportantcharactersareMissOpheliaSt.Clare,aNewEnglandspinster,andMarks,theslavecatcher.TheAnysisOfUncleTom’sCabinUncleTom’sCabin”isananti-slaverynovelbyAmericanwriterHarrietBeecherStowe.Shewasanactiveabolitionistanditisimportanttomentionthatabolitionism,themovementtoendtheslavetradeandemancipateslaveswasratherpopularthattimes.Therewasnomoreslaveryinthenorthernstates;howeveritwasstillverystronginthesouthern.Andeveninthesouthinthosestatesborderingthenortherntherealreadyexistedsomemovementsforemancipation.Andinoneofsuchstates-inKentucky-wemeettheheroesonthefirstpagesofthenovel.ThemainthemeofthebookThemainthemeofthebookisthecrueltyandimmoralityofslaveryanditisrevealedpracticallyoneverypage.Agreatpartofthenovelisdedicatedtothediscussionsaboutslavery,andwecannoticetheroughdivisionintothosecharacterswhoareagainstitandthosewhoconsiderittobenatural,normalandconvenientandblackpeopletobea“degradedrace”whoarelikeanimalsandevenworse,theyhavenofeelings,nofamilyvaluesandaffections.AnothermajorthemeAnothermajorthemeofUncleTom’sCabinisthemoralpowerandsanctityofwomen.ThroughcharacterslikeEliza,whoescapesfromslaverytosaveheryoungson(andeventuallyreunitesherentirefamily),orLittleEva,whoisseenasthe“idealChristian”,likeanangeltheauthorshowshowshebelievedwomencouldsavethosearoundthemfromeventheworstinjustices.Observation1Wecanalsoobservesomeothersubthemesthroughoutthetext,suchasthemoralauthorityofmotherhoodandtheredeemingpossibilitiesofferedbyChristianity,theauthoremphasizestheconnectionsbetweentheseandthehorrorsofslavery.Observation2Stowe’spuritanicalreligiousbeliefsarerevealedinfinalpartofthenovel,whensheexplainsthenatureofChristianityandhowshefeelsChristiantheologyisfundamentallyincompatiblewithslavery.ThisthemeismostevidentwhenTomurgesSt.Clareto“lookawaytoJesus”afterthedeathofSt.Clare’sbeloveddaughterEva.WecandrawaconclusionthatChristianthemesplayanimportantroleinUncleTom’sCabin.TheEnd
