――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――上海市愚园路905-907号新利商务中心1号楼2楼电话:(021)524001111FAX:(021)52400101邮政编码:200050计算机专业攻读硕士PERSONALSTATEMENT:Afourth-yearstudentgroundedsolidlyinthebasicsofcomputerscience,IamwritinginpursuitofgraduatestudiesthatIhopecanhelpmeacquirecutting-edgeexpertiseinsoftwareprogrammingingeneralandparallelprocessinginparticular.Intriguedbythepowerofthecomputersincehighschool,Ihavebeentryingtostayontopofthecomputersciencebyconcentratingmyundergraduatestudiesonthosesubjectsthatunderpinthediscipline,particularlymathematicsandelectronics.Tobuildupmysolidknowledgeinthesesubjects,Ihavetakenvirtuallyalltherelatedcoursesthattheuniversityhashadtooffer.ThesecoursesincludeAlgorithm&DataStructure,MathematicalModeling,NetworkTheory,DigitalCircuit,DiscreteMathematics,andElectricCircuit.Withasophisticatedunderstandingintheseareas,Ihavebeenwellpositionedtoappreciatethebasictheoriesofcomputerscienceandtheirapplicationstosoftwaredevelopment.Aidedbythefirmcommandofthebasics,Ihavefounditnotonlyeasybutalsoexcitingtostudythevarioussubjectscoveredbymymajor.Asmostofmyclassmates,ItookavarietyofcoursesrangingfromAItoComputerNetwork,fromAIProgrammingtoKnowledgeEngineering,fromPatternRecognitiontoSoftwareEngineering,andfromDatabaseDesigntoProgrammingLanguageDesign.ButIdistinguishedmyselfbymyacademicrecord,whichplacesmeasoneoftheverytopstudentsinmyclass.MygradesinthesecourseneverwentbelowAorB.IhavealsostoodoutasoneofthefewwhohavetaughtthemselvesRealTimeSystemandComputerGraphics.Armedwithsoundtraininginthebasictheoriesandappliedtechnologies,Ihavebeenabletomoveonintodeeperandwiderareasofcomputerscience.Earlyinmyuniversitylife,Ibegantounderstandthatthemoderncomputer''sbase,theTuringmachine,wasreachingitslimitsinAI.Gradually,Ihavenarroweddownmyresearchinteresttoparallel&distributivecomputing,whichIunderstandcansignificantlyboosttheperformanceofpersonalcomputersbygivingthemsomeofthefunctionsofmainframecomputers.Ofalltheareasofcomputerscience,parallelprocessingfascinatesmethemost.ThetermfirstcametomewhenIreadthebookComputerOrganization&Design:theHardware/SoftwareInterfaceaspartofmyComputerArchitecturecourse.Byteachingmehowtheperformanceofcomputerscanbeimprovedthroughpipeliningandparallelprocessing,thebookreshapedmythinkingincomputerscience.Mylabexperiencedeepenedmyunderstandingofparallelprocessing.Inmythirdyear,IworkedonaGIFTprojectwithDr.Komatsu,chiefresearcherofIBMTokyoResearchLaboratoryandDr.Koseki,oneofDr.Komatsu''scolleagues.Theprojectwastointroducethearchitecturesupportsthatcanallowcompilerstoderivemoreparallelismfromprograms.Thesearchitecturesupportsincludethreedesigns,aconditionalexecutionmechanismtoexecuteinstructionswithoutnormalconditionaljumpinstructions,speculativeexecutionmechanism,andadynamicmemorydisambiguationmechanismtoexecutememoryaccessinstructionssimultaneously.Asundergraduatestudentsseldomgettobeinvolvedinactualresearch,Itookfulladvantageoftheopportunityofworkinginthelab.Iparticularlyenjoyedtheseminarsheldtwiceaweekaspartofthelabwork.Attheseseminars,Iengagedinin-depthdiscussionswithMaster''sstudentsunderDr.Komatsu''sseasonedguidance.ThelabexperienceisaddingweightandinsightstomygraduationpaperAnImprovementofSoftwarepipeliningusingLoopTransformations.Inthispaper,Iwillintroduceatranslationalgorithmusingloopinterchangeandloopskewing.Thisalgorithmcanminimizetheinitiationintervalofloopnesttoimprovetheperformanceofsoftwarepipelining.Throughmylabexperienceandotherresearch,Ihavedevelopedalong-termprofessionalobjective:theadvancementoftheparallelprocessingtechnology.WhileIhavestrongfaithinthistechnology,Ialsoknowitslimitationsasitistoday.Somesequentialalgorithmscan''tbeeasilytranslatedintofastparallelalgorithmsandmostcompilerscanonlydistributeworksononeplatform.Anotherunsettledproblemisthatprogrammingparallelcomputersisnowstillamanualwork.Buteventhemodernlanguage(likeJava,C++)candosomeautomatictranslationwork.Ifacompilercanbedevelopedtotranslateanddistributeworkintodifferentplatforms,personalcomputerswillbeabletoworklikemainframecomputersatafractionofthemainframes''costs.Thiswillmakeitpossibletoconnectallthecomputersintheworldandspeedupalltheprocesses.Tohelptaketheparallelprocessingtechnologybeyondwhatiscapableoftoday,Ihavetoundertakemore――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――上海市愚园路905-907号新利商务中心1号楼2楼电话:(021)524001111FAX:(021)52400101邮政编码:200050
