TheSevenWondersSelectedbytheAncientGreeksWhentheancientGreeksdecidedtoselectsevenwondersfromthemanyimpressivestructuresthathadbeenconstructedthroughouthistory,therewasalotofargumentaboutwhichstructurestoselect.Overtheyears,manydifferentlistswerecreated.Finally,alistwaspresentedthatmostGreeksagreedincludedthesevenmostwondrouswonders,eachauniqueachievement.VisittheSevenWondersoftheAncientWorldGreatPyramidatGizaHangingGardensofBabylonStatueofZeusatOlympiaTempleofArtemisatEphesusMausoleumatHalicarnassusColossusofRhodesLighthouseatAlexandriaTheGreatPyramidatGizaTheGreatPyramidofGizaisabout4,500yearsold,andistheonlyancientwonderstillstanding.TheGreatPyramidatGizaUntiltheearly1800's,theGreatPyramidatGizawasthetallestbuildingintheworld!TheGreatPyramidatGizaTheGreatPyramidatGizaTheGreatpyramidwasmadebyhand!Itisnearly800feetlong,450feethigh.Itwasbuiltwithovertwomillionofblocksofstone.Theaverageweightofeachstoneisabout2,500pounds-aroundthesameweightasacar!TheHangingGardensofBabylonTherewaslittleargumentthattheHangingGardensofBabylonwouldbeincludedasaworldwonder.Itwasonnearlyeveryone’slist.TheHangingGardensThethoughtofahugeandmagnificentgarden,towering300feetabovethedesertsands,appealedtotheGreekssenseoftheincredible.TheHangingGardensTheHangingGardensweresupposedlybuiltaround600BCE,alongthebanksoftheEuphratesRiverinBabylon.Constructedinsidethepalacewalls,thegardenswerebuiltinaseriesofplatforms,orterraces,thatcreatedastructure400feetlong,400feetwide,and380feethigh!TheHangingGardensWanderingpathsandaseriesofstepsconnectedthevariouslevels.Thegardenswereawonderlandofgreenery,floweringplants,andwaterfalls.ThatalonewouldhavegreatlyimpressedtheancientGreeks.Butalovestorywasattachedtothegardensthatmadethemevenmoreinteresting.ItwasrumoredthatthekingKingNebuchadnezzar,orderedthegardensbuilttohonorhisqueen.TheHangingGardensThequeenwashomesickforherlandinthemountains.ThegardensweredesignedbythekingtomakehisqueenfeellovedandwelcomedinhernewlandofBabylon.NooneknowsifthelovestorybehindtheHangingGardensofBabylonistrue,orifthegardenseverreallyexisted.TheHangingGardensButitwasagreatstory,andtheGreekslovedstories,especiallystoriesaboutwarandlove.TheStatueofZeusatOlympiaTherewasabsolutelynoargumentabouttheStatueofZeus.Itwasaworldwonder–everyoneknewthat!TheStatueofZeusatOlympiaZeuswasthekingoftheancientGreekgods.OlympiawasthecitythathostedtheAncientGreekOlympicGames.Thestatuecouldhavebeenthesizeofapeanut,andstilltheAncientGreekswouldhaveselectedit.Butittrulywasamagnificentstructure.TheTempleofZeuswascompletedin456BCE.TheStatueofZeusatOlympiaLiketheParthenonandtheTempleofArtemis,Doriccolumnswereusedtosupportthestructure.ItwasbuiltinOlympiatohonorZeusandtheGreekOlympicGames.TheStatueofZeusatOlympiaToday,littleremainsofthetempleortheoncemagnificentStatueofZeuswithinit.ButthespiritoftheOlympicGamesliveson!TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusTheTempleofArtemiswasfirstbuiltaround800BCEintheancientGreekcityofEphesus,onthecoastofwhatisnowmoderndayTurkey.TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusThetemplewasdestroyedandrebuiltseveraltimes.Eachtime,itwasrebuiltmoreimpressivelythanthetemplebeforeit.Thefirsttemplewasdestroyedaround550BCEinawar.Yearslater,thetemplewasburntdownbyamanwhowantedtoberememberedforever.(Thetowncreatedalawthatsaidanyonewhomentionedhisnamewouldbeputtodeathimmediately.)TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusThetemplewasunderconstruction(again)whensomeyearslaterAlexandertheGreatvisitedthetown.Alexanderhadseenmanybeautifulbuildingsinhistravels,butthistemplewassobeautifulthatitimpressedevenAlexandertheGreat!Thetowndidnotwanttodothat,buttheydidthankAlexanderverynicely.(YouwouldtooifyouwerefacingAlexander'sarmy!)Alexanderofferedtogivethetownenoughmoneytofinishingbuildingitifthetownspeoplewouldputhisnameonit.TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusInAlexander’stime,theornatelydecoratedtemplewas425feetlong,225feetwide,and60feethigh.127columnssupportedtheroof.Aconstantstreamofvisitorscametoseethetemple.Thetownspeoplebuiltshopsaroundthetemple.Someshopssoldlittlereplicasofthetemplefortouriststotakehome.ThecityofEphesusboomedforawhile.Butitdidnotlast.Thetemplewasdestroyed(again)around200CEbytheGoths.TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusThistime,itwasnotrebuilt.Constructioncostshadincreasedconsiderably.Therewasnotenoughmoneyinthetowntreasurytorebuildthetempletoitsformermagnificence.Theremainingpiecesslowlysunkinthemarshyfielduntiltheruindisappearedfromsightaltogether.TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusHundredsofyearslater,inthe1800's,theBritishMuseumsentateamtosearchforthefabledTempleofArtemis.Noonehadanyideawherethetempleusedtostand.Shortofdiggingupthewholetownandthesurroundingcountryside,thefirstteamfoundthemselvesratherstuck.Anotherteam,sentoutafewyearslater,duguptheremainsof5temples,onebuiltontopoftheother.TheybelievedtheyhadfoundtheTempleofArtemis!TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusToday,allthatremainsofthisincrediblestructureisasinglecolumninthemiddleofamarshyfieldthatmarksthespotwheretheTempleoncestood.TheMausoleumatHalicarnassusKingMausoluswasarulerofasmallkingdominAsiaMinor.HewasmarriedtoArtemisia,wholove
