中南民族大学硕士学位论文中式英语和中国英语的语言特征及成因比较姓名:彭慧申请学位级别:硕士专业:外国语言学及应用语言学指导教师:黄崇珍20100510ContrastiveStudyofLinguisticFeaturesandCausesofChinglishandChinaEnglishivv;;;;ContrastiveStudyofLinguisticFeaturesandCausesofChinglishandChinaEnglishiiAbstractThewidespreaduseofEnglishinChinatheseyearsleadstotheformationoftwokindsofcontroversiallanguages:anewkindofworldEnglishcalled“ChinaEnglish”andtheothersocalledChineseEnglish,abbreviatedas“Chinglish”.Emphasisonthestudiesof“Chinglish”and“ChinaEnglish”athomeandabroadalwaysbeengivendifferently.Thereisrarecontrastivestudyofthetwokindsoflanguagessystematically.ThestudiesofChinglisharescatteredinarticlesorbooksandthecausesofChinglisharejustexploredinlightofthetheoryofsecondlanguageacquisition.ThestudiesofChinaEnglishjusthighlightedtheaspectofcontributiontointernationalcommunicationfromtheangeloftranslationwhilethecontrastivestudyofobviousdifferentlinguisticfeaturesbetweenChinaEnglishandChinglishisnotahottopic.Inviewoffactsabove,thisthesisistoinvestigatethelinguisticfeaturesandcharacteristicsofChinglishandChinaEnglishthroughcontrastiveanalysisanderroranalysiswithassistantexamplesfromdailyconversations,magazines,books,andconversationsfromTV.Thereasonsfortheirformationanddevelopmentwillbeanalyzedundertheguidanceoftheoriesofinterlanguage,fossilization,andtherelationshipbetweenlanguage,cultureandthought.Onthebasisoftheaboveanalysis,thedifferencesbetweenthetwokindsoflanguagephenomenacanbeconcluded:ChinglishismisshapenEnglishwhichisproducedbyChineseEnglishlearnersandspeakerswhodrawonChineserulesandstructuresmechanicallyasaresultofmothertongueinterferenceandtheirlowproficiencyoflinguisticcompetence.ItdoesnotconformtotherulesofStandardEnglishorEnglishculturalconvention.WhereasChinaEnglishisalanguagethatEnglishiscombinedwithChinesesocialculture.ItistheEnglishwithChinesecharacteristicscoinedbytheChinesepeople,whohavegrownupintheChinesesocialandculturalbackground,whentheyuseEnglishtoexpressthemthemselves.ItisgreatlyinfluencedbyChineseculture,thethinkingmodesofChinesepeopleandtheirownlimitediiiphysiologicalcondition.Asaresult,ChinglishnotonlycausestheEnglishlearners’misuseofEnglishlanguageandconfusiontothelanguage’scontainedculturemeanings,butmoreseriously,alsohindersthecross-culturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandotherEnglish-speakingcountries.However,ChinaEnglishcanreachtheaimofcommunicationandcanbeacceptedbyStandardEnglishspeakerswithChineselinguisticfeaturesandculturalbackgroundsBecauseofthevastdifferencesbetweenChinglishandChinaEnglish,differentattitudeshouldbeemphasizedtotreatthem.TheuseofChinglishneedstobereducedoreradicated,onthecontrary,theuseofChinaEnglishshouldbeproposed.Inthisway,thestatusofChinaEnglishcanbefoundedandthecommunicationbetweenChinaandotherEnglish-speakingcountrieswillbemorefluent.Therefore,theapplicationofcontrastivestudybetweenChinglishandChinaEnglishthatemphasizedinthisthesisissignificant.Throughcontrasting,thedifferencesbetweenChinglishandChinaEnglisharemoreobviousandthroughthecombinationofcontrastiveanalysisanderroranalysis,theerrorsmadebyChineseEnglishlearnerscanbeanalyzedeasilyanderadicated.Inaddition,somesensiblewaysareproposedinthisthesistopreventtheformationofChinglishandtospreadtheuseofChinaEnglish.HopethatthethesiscanhelpEnglishlearnersandexpertstoknowmoreaboutChinglishandChinaEnglish,provideenlightenmentonlanguageteaching,andmostimportantly,exertpositiveinfluenceonEastern-Westerncommunication.Keywords:ChinaEnglish;Chinglish;mothertongueinterference;culturalbackgrounds;thinkingmodes1______2iAcknowledgementsFirstofall,IwanttogivemydeepestrespectandthankstomysupervisorProfessorHuangChongzhen,whoseenlighteninginstructionandconstantencouragementhelpmetoaccomplishthisthesis.Iamverymuchindebtedtoherbecauseshesearchedforhelpfulinformationtoguidemeandspentalotoftimetorevisemythesis.MyspecialrespectsandthanksalsogotoallofmyteachersatSouth-CentralUniversityforNationalities.Thanksverymuchfortheirinformativeandinspiringcourses.Theirpatienceandwisdomhavebenefitedmeabovemeasure.Second,Iamgratefultomyclassmatesanddearfriends.Thanksfortheiraccompanyingtohelpmethroughthehardtimeandsharetheirenjoymenttimewithme.Ifeelblessedbybeingassistedandcaredbythem.FinallyIwouldliketothankmyparentsfortheirendlessloveandsupportduringtheseyears.WiththeirloveIamencouragedtofacewithanykindsofdifficultiesandcanbedrovedtosolveanyproblems.Thanksverymuch.1ChapterIIntroduction1.1DefinitionofChinglishChinglishisusuallyproducedbyChinesepeopleinChinese-Englishtranslationandalsocalled“ChineseEnglish”.Itisacombinationof“Chinese”and“English”andcausescommunicationbetweenStandardEnglishspeakersandChinglishusersbreakdown.TakingaChinesesigninanairport“”forexample,theequivalentEnglishversionbelowitis“noentryonpeacetime”.ItmaymakeEnglishnativespeakerspuzzled.Actually“EmergencyExit”couldmakethisChinesesignsense.Athomeandabroad,manyteachersandscholarshavenoticedtheexistenceofChinglishandthestudiesofitarescatteredinbooksorarticles.However,becauseofitsunsystematicandunsteadynaturetheterm“Chinglish”hasbeendefineddifferent
