China:Educationmustservethesocialistmodernizationconstruction,servethepeople,mustbewithproductivelaborandsocialpractise,trainingthebuildersandsuccessorsofthesocialistcause,whodevelopmorally,intellectually,physicallyandaesthetically.British:Thepurposeofschoolistoprovidechildrenwithliteracyandtheotherbasicskillstheywillneedtobecomeactivemembersofsociety.ButthepurposeoftheBritishEducationsystemisalsotosocializechildren.America:Thegoalis–andhasbeensincetheearlydecadesftherepublic—toachieveuniversalliteracyandtoprovideindividualswiththeknowledgeandskillsnecessarytopromoteboththeirownindividualwelfareaswellasthatofthegeneralpublic.Thoughthisgoalhasnotyetbeenfullyachieved,itremainsanidealtowardwhichtheAmericaneducationalsystemisdirected.Theprogresswhichhasbeenmadeitnotablebothforitsscopeandfortheeducationalmethodswhichhavebeendevelopedintheprocessofachieving.
