DESIGNMEDIAPUBLISHINGLIMITEDDESIGNMEDIAPUBLISHINGLIMITEDNEWSCHOOLDESIGNSNEWSCHOOLDESIGNSTheschooldesigns(newconstruction,refurbishment,renovationorexpansion)arecrucialandconcernedwithnaturalenvironment,urbanisationandurbanlife,whichbringnewandmoremissionsandresponsibilitiestoschooldesigns.Schoolsmusttobetheorganicpartoftheurbanlife,nolongertobeaclosed,evenisolatedplacetotheirneighboursinacity.Modernschooldesignspresentthreecharacters:quality-controlisalwaysfirst,sustainabilityisin;schoolsarethenewcentreofcommunityresidents’life.Weselected42schooldesignsbyworldarchitectsandinteriordesigners,includingprimaryandsecondaryschoolsandprofessionaltrainingschools.Let'senjoythesewonderfulworks.NEWSCHOOLDESIGNSDESIGNMEDIAPUBLISHINGLIMITEDEditor’sWordsSustainableGrowingofSchoolsfortheFutureLovelyplayground,squareandboringclassroomsandpoker-faceteachersmaybethemainimagesflowingthroughourheadswhenwerecallourschoolingtime.Whatwethoughtaboutishowtobethefirstonerunningtotheplaygroundandstartbreakgames.Asfortheschooldesignquality,thatisnotthefirstattentionforus,evennotforourparents.However,theschoolistheorganisationwherechildrenaretrainedforthefuture.Mostpeoplegrowupwiththeaccompanyingoftheschool,whichistheinitiallypublicspaceforpeopletocommunicatewithandmayinfluentthewholelifeofapersonandthedevelopmentofatime.Thatchildplayingwithhis/herclassmatesispossibletobealeader,anartistoranarchitectinthefuture.Variousprofessionaltrainingschoolsaresetuptomeetthedemandofsocialdevelopmentsuchasculinaryschools,danceschoolsandlanguagetrainingschools,andbecomeamainpartofschooldesignprojectsbesideselementaryandsecondaryschools.Therefore,theschooldesigns(newconstruction,refurbishment,renovationorexpansion)arecrucialandconcernedwithnaturalenvironment,urbanisationandurbanlife,whichbringnewandmoremissionsandresponsibilitiestoschooldesigns.Schoolsmusttobetheorganicpartoftheurbanlife,nolongertobeaclosed,evenisolatedplacetotheirneighboursinacity.Modernschooldesignspresentthreecharacters:quality-controlisalwaysfirst,sustainabilityisin;schoolsarethenewcentreofcommunityresidents’life.Quality-controlisalwaysfirstQualityreignshasbeenbuiltupgraduallywiththedevelopmentofthesociety,andunquestionably,ithasbecomethekeynormofschooldesigns.1.Spacedesignquality-controlunderlimitedconditionsThesocialdevelopmentbringstheincreaseofpopulationandurbanexpansion.Aresidentialzone’sdevelopmentoftenaccompanywiththegrowthinschool-agepopulation,sonewchallengesforschooladministratorsandarchitectsarenotsimplynewbuildingspaceavailabletomeetthedemandofschool-agechildren,butalsolookhighandlowforavailablespacesandimprovefacilitiesinanexistingschooltokeepupwiththecompetitionforstudents.Effectiveandhigh-qualityspacedesignisthedeterminantelementofschoolquality.DesignedbyN+BArchitectes,therestructuringandextensionoftheHighSchoolPaulValéry(page184inthebook)inMenton,Franceis“characterisedbyastrongduality”.Theexiguityoftheavailablespacesfortheextension,associatedwithastricturbanisticregulationsforthesitingofthenewbuildings.Thisworkonthereliefadmitsaminimumofreorganisationoftheprogrammetoinstallthevariousbuildingsandorganisespaces.Finally,“amicrocosmofferingavarietyoflandscapes”wascreated.Newconstructionprojectswillprovidearchitectsmoreopportunitiestorealisetheirideas,comparingwithrenovationandexpansionprojects.However,howtoforeseeandprepareforfuturedevelopmentwithpremiseofrealisingeconomicalandsufficientutilizationofspace,forinstance,thegrowthinfutureschool-agepopulationisoneofchallengesforarchitects.GrayPuksanddesignedaprimaryschool“aroundaseriesofculturallysignificantnaturereserves”,andcreatedaninnovative,spaciousandflexiblelearningspaces“thatwouldenablethefacilitytoadapttothechangingneedsoftheschoolcommunityasitgrewwiththedevelopmentofthesurroundingcommunity”.2.ExtrafunctionvalueofspacedesignsSchoolsaretheplacewheretalentsstarttheircomprehensiveeducation,andexaminationpointsarenolongerthemeasureordecisionfactorsoftalents.Moreandmoreeducatorspaytheirattentionstoinspirestudents’abilitiesofunderstanding,self-studyandcreativity,inordertotrainthestudenttogetreadyforunpredictablechallenges.Therefore,traditionalschoolfacilities,suchasclassrooms,teacherofficesandwaterclosetscannotmeettherequirementofneweducationsystem,andmorefunctionalspacesandfacitlitiesarerequiredtoimprovethespaces’functionalvalueforabilitieytraining,inaddtiontotraditionalknowledgeseducation.Toestablishgoodrelationshipbetweenthestudentsandnature,society,otherpersonsandthefutureandobtaintheabilityofunderstanding,appreciatingandcreatingwillbehappenedinnewandhigh-design-qualityschools.ArchitectsMartinLejarragaformSpaintransformedOurLadyoftheRosaryPublicSchool(formoreinformation,pleaseseepage110)asakindofjack-in-the-box,tocollectfantasiesandimagination,knowledge,dreamsandcolours.ThecorridorinLynnwoodHighSchool(page240inthisbook,designedbyBassettiArchitects)isalsothegalleryoftheschool.DoorsandfloorsinMunkegårdSchool(page76),designedbyDorteMandrupArkitekter,reproducedArneJacobsen’swallpaper.Thesedesignsprovidespacesofartsandima
