RecommendationITU-RBT.2020-2(10/2015)Parametervaluesforultra-highdefinitiontelevisionsystemsforproductionandinternationalprogrammeexchangeBTSeriesBroadcastingservice(television)iiRec.ITU-RBT.2020-2ForewordTheroleoftheRadiocommunicationSectoristoensuretherational,equitable,efficientandeconomicaluseoftheradio-frequencyspectrumbyallradiocommunicationservices,includingsatelliteservices,andcarryoutstudieswithoutlimitoffrequencyrangeonthebasisofwhichRecommendationsareadopted.TheregulatoryandpolicyfunctionsoftheRadiocommunicationSectorareperformedbyWorldandRegionalRadiocommunicationConferencesandRadiocommunicationAssembliessupportedbyStudyGroups.PolicyonIntellectualPropertyRight(IPR)ITU-RpolicyonIPRisdescribedintheCommonPatentPolicyforITU-T/ITU-R/ISO/IECreferencedinAnnex1ofResolutionITU-R1.Formstobeusedforthesubmissionofpatentstatementsandlicensingdeclarationsbypatentholdersareavailablefrom(Alsoavailableonlineat)SeriesTitleBOSatellitedeliveryBRRecordingforproduction,archivalandplay-out;filmfortelevisionBSBroadcastingservice(sound)BTBroadcastingservice(television)FFixedserviceMMobile,radiodetermination,amateurandrelatedsatelliteservicesPRadiowavepropagationRARadioastronomyRSRemotesensingsystemsSFixed-satelliteserviceSASpaceapplicationsandmeteorologySFFrequencysharingandcoordinationbetweenfixed-satelliteandfixedservicesystemsSMSpectrummanagementSNGSatellitenewsgatheringTFTimesignalsandfrequencystandardsemissionsVVocabularyandrelatedsubjectsNote:ThisITU-RRecommendationwasapprovedinEnglishundertheproceduredetailedinResolutionITU-R1.ElectronicPublicationGeneva,2015ITU2015Allrightsreserved.Nopartofthispublicationmaybereproduced,byanymeanswhatsoever,withoutwrittenpermissionofITU.Rec.ITU-RBT.2020-21RECOMMENDATIONITU-RBT.2020-2Parametervaluesforultra-highdefinitiontelevisionsystemsforproductionandinternationalprogrammeexchange(2012-2014-2015)ScopeUltra-highdefinitiontelevision(UHDTV)willprovideviewerswithanenhancedvisualexperienceprimarilybyhavingawidefieldofviewbothhorizontallyandverticallywithappropriatescreensizesrelevanttousageathomeandinpublicplaces.UHDTVapplicationsrequiresystemparametersthatgobeyondthelevelsofHDTV.ThisRecommendationspecifiesUHDTVimagesystemparametersforproductionandinternationalprogrammeexchange.KeywordsUHDTV,imagesystemparameters,widefieldofview,televisionsystem,internationalprogrammeexchangeTheITURadiocommunicationAssembly,consideringa)thatdigitalterrestrialtelevisionbroadcasting(DTTB)servicehasbeenintroducedbysomeadministrationssince1997andcanprovidehighqualitytelevisionprogrammesthroughHDTVsystems;b)thatviewersexpectfutureTVsystemsbeyondHDTVtoprovideimprovedcharacteristicscomparedwiththecurrentHDTVsystemsintermsofamorerealisticsensation,greatertransparencytotherealworld,andmoreaccuratevisualinformation;c)thatultra-highdefinitiontelevision(UHDTV)isexpectedtobecomeavailableinthenearfuturewith,interalia,largerscreens,higherspatial/temporalresolution,widercolourgamut,widerdynamicrange,etc.takingintoaccountdevelopmentsofdisplaytechnology;d)thatITU-Rhasbeenstudyingextremelyhigh-resolutionimagery(EHRI)andanexpandedhierarchyoflargescreendigitalimagery(LSDI)imageformatsandhasestablishedITU-RRecommendations:RecommendationITU-RBT.1201-1providingtheguidelinesofimagecharacteristicsforextremelyhigh-resolutionimagery,andRecommendationITU-RBT.1769offeringtheparametervaluesforanexpandedhierarchyofLSDIimageformats;e)thatLSDIisasystemprovidingadisplayonaverylargescreen,typicallyforpublicviewing.Thiscanbeusedinawidevarietyofapplicationsincludingprogrammepresentationssuchasdramas,plays,sportingevents,concerts,etc.;f)thatEHRIisasystemofferinghigherresolutionthanHDTVandcanbeusedforbothbroadcastingandnon-broadcastingapplications(e.g.computergraphics,printingandmedicalapplications);g)thatUHDTVprovidesviewerswithanenhancedvisualexperienceprimarilybyawiderfieldofviewthatcoversaconsiderablepartofthehumannaturalvisualfieldwithappropriatescreensizesrelevanttousageathomeandinpublicplaces;h)thatsignalformatscontributingtoincreasingthecompressionefficiencyaredesirableforUHDTVsystemssincetheyhavealargernumberofpixelsthanHDTVsystems,2Rec.ITU-RBT.2020-2notingthatReportITU-RBT.2246describesthecurrentstateofultra-highdefinitiontelevision,recommendsthatforUHDTVprogrammeproductionandinternationalexchange,thespecificationsdescribedinthisRecommendationshouldbeused1,andfurtherrecommendsthatifitisshownthatanalternativeelectro-opticaltransferfunction(EOTF)willprovidesignificantbenefitswithoutalsoimposingsignificantdisadvantages,thenthisRecommendationshouldbeextendedtoenableusewithanimprovedEOTF.NOTE–FutureconsiderationshouldbegiventoextendthisRecommendationinacomplementarymannertoincludeextendedimageparameters.TABLE1PicturespatialcharacteristicsParameterValuesPictureaspectratio16:9PixelcountHorizontal×vertical7680
