1FUDANUNIVERSITYCollegeofForeignLanguagesandLiteratureDivisionIVofCollegeEnglishCenterAcademicEnglishforMedicalPurposeINSTRUCTORSName:孙庆祥陈亚丽陈雪雷苗伟凌秋虹唐伟Office:枫林校区第一教学楼1305室Phone:54237844COURSEDESCRIPTIONThiscourseisdesignedandofferedtohelpthestudentswiththeirEnglishproficiencyinacademiccontextswheremedicineisthesubjectmatter.Therationalesthiscourseisbasedoninclude:1)shiftfromEnglishforGeneralPurpose(EGP)toEnglishforAcademic/SpecificPurpose(EAP/ESP)isthetrendofEnglishteachingandlearningattertiarylevelinChina;2)althoughinseparable,EAPdiffersfromEGPinmanyrespectsandwarrantsspecialattentionsothatthelearnersuseEnglishlanguageproficientlyandproperlyinacademiccontexts;and3)EnglishforAcademicPurposeentailsavastarrayofskillsandagoodknowledgeofthesubjectmatter.Thiscourse,therefore,isframedtoprovidethestudentswithopportunitiestoexposethemselvestothesubjectmatterrelatedtomedicine,todeveloplanguageproficiencyandskillsasneededforcommunicationinacademiccontexts,andtouseEnglishlanguageinsimulatedorrealsituationswhereEnglishlanguageservesasthemediumforcommunication.OBJECTIVESAttheendofthecourse,thestudentsareexpectedto•enrichthemselveswithknowledgeofcontentmattersuchastreatmentandpreventionofdiseases,alternativeandsupplementarymedicine,emergingandreemergingdiseases,etc.;•expandbyalargemargintheirvocabulary;•getfamiliarwithmostcommonlyusedmedicaltermsincurrentmedicalliteratureandmedicalpractice;•beabletoprepareanddeliverpresentationonthetopicsrelatedtomedicinewith/withouttheaidofPPT;•beproficientwhencommunicatinginacademiccontexts;•TEXTBOOKANDTEACHINGMATERIALS•《学术英语（医学）》.季佩英,孙庆祥等.2012.外语教学与研究出版社.•《学术英语（医学）教师用书》.季佩英,孙庆祥等.2013.外语教学与研究出版社.•Supplementaryvideoclips2REQUIREMENTS•BeautonomousinyourEnglishlearning;•Beengagedinout-of-classlisteningpractice;•Readthetextcriticallyandgetreadyforanyactivityintheclassroom;•Accomplishtheassignedoralpresentationinclass;•Getdynamicallyinvolvedinanyclassroomactivities;•Enlargeyourvocabularyandlanguageknowledgeandimproveyoursenseofthetargetlanguage;•Enrichyourselfwithknowledgeofmedicine-relatedissues;•Accomplishwritingassignments;•Ensureyourattendance.ASSIGNMENTS1.WritingtasksWritingtasksbasedonthecontentsofthelectureswillbespecifiedinclass.Therequirementsforeachtaskvary,butthefollowingaresomegeneralconsiderations.Studentshavetosubmitthewrittentasksintheformatspecifiedbytheinstructor.Inanysubmissions,spellingmistakes,grammaticalerrorsasindicatedbyMicrosoftWordwithunderlinesinredshouldbecheckedandcorrectedbeforesubmission.Anelectronicwordcountshouldbeprovidedforallwrittentasks.Awordlimitof±10%appliestoallthewrittentasks.Forexample,ifthewordlimitis100,yoursubmissioncanbeinarangefrom90-110words(excludingappendicesorreferences).Theelectronicversionshouldbeemailedtotheinstructor2-3daysbeforetheduedatetoavoidallpossibledelayssuchascomputerbreakdownthenightbeforetheduedateorthee-mailmightbejammedsomewhereonline!Apaperversion,ifrequiredbytheinstructor,shouldbehandedintotheinstructorinclass.Writingtasksthatarehandedinontimewillbecorrected,gradedandreturnedpromptly,delayedsubmissions(within5workingdays)willbeevaluatedwithloweredcredits,andsubmissionsdelayedbylongerthan5workingdayswillnotbeaccepted.Ifyouhavetobeabsentonthedaytheassignmentisdue,turnitinatthefollowingsessionoftheclass.Absenceisnotanexcuseforlatersubmission.Writingtasksaccountfor10%inyourfinalgrade.2.ClassroomPresentationYouaresupposedtodeliver2-3-minutepresentationsonthegiventopicsrelatedtothecontentofthetext(TopicsforpresentationofTextA).Yourpresentationswillbeintegratedintootherclassroomactivitieswhentherelatedpartisdiscussed.YourpresentationisjudgedbyPREPARATION,PERTINENCE,FLUENCY,PRONUNCIATIONandREACTIONfromtheaudience.Yourpresentationsaccountfor10%inyourfinalgrade.33.TeamworkReportTheassignment,tobecompletedinagroupoffourorthree,istofurtheryourunderstandingofthetextcoveredinclass,tofacilitateyouractualuseoftargetlanguageincontext,andtobuildcooperationwithotherlearners.PreparationTheclassisdividedintogroupsaccordingtotheclasssize.Eachgroupelecttheirteamleader.Agroupwillbedesignatedtoworkonaparticulartopic.Aweek’stimeisallowedforeachgrouptomakepreparation.TaskDesignEachgroupissupposedtocompleteResearchingandreportingasdescribedineachunitanddelivera10-minutePPTreportasateam.Thestudentsareencouragedtousethelanguagelearnedfromthetext.ThePPTshouldbeemailedtotheinstructortwodaysaheadofthereport.EvaluationCriteriaforevaluationinclude:OverallImpression,Organization,Pertinence,UseofLanguage.Asateamworktask,aholisticapproachisemployedforthejudgmentoftheperformance,allowingdifferencesofasmallrangebetweenthescores.Theperformanceaccountsfor10%inthefinalgrade.ACADEMICHONESTYStudentsshouldbewellawareofthepoliciesandregulationsconcerningacademichonestyinFudanUniversity.Studentsarebelievedtobehonest.Cheating,plagiarism,forgeryandknowinglyfurnishingfalseinformationinyouracademicworkaregravemattersthataresubjecttodiscipline.DisciplinaryactionforacademicdishonestycanrangefromanautomaticgradeofFonanassignmentorexamtoagradeofFfortheentire
