ACADEMICREADINGPRACTICETEST1READINGPASSAGE1Questions1-13Youshouldspendabout20minutesonQuestions1–13whicharebasedonReadingPassage1below.THEBIGCATSATTHESHARJAHBREEDINGCENTREItisoneofthefewplaceswhereyouwillbeabletospotthemallatthesametime…theArabianwolf,anAfricancheetah,anArabianleopard,anoryx,agazelle.Thesearejustsomeoftheanimals,which,onthebrinkofextinction,arenowgettinganewleaseoflifethankstotheexemplaryworkbeingdoneattheBreedingCentreforEndangeredArabianWildlifeinSharjah.SharjahisoneofthesevenemiratesthatmakeuptheUnitedArabEmirates.TheBreedingCentre’sexpertiseandfacilitieshavemadeitaprimedestinationforillegallyimportedanimalsconfiscatedbyUAEandSharjahauthorities.Inthelastfouryears,morethan900mammalsandreptilesand969birdshavearrivedatthecentre,including25NorthAfricancheetahs,Houbarabustardandfalcons,lions,ababyNilecrocodileandaBurmesepythonthatwasleftinarentalcarattheairport.The25cheetahswereallimportedillegallyintotheUAEandwereinterceptedattheUAEharbourandairportentrypoints.Theynearlyallarrivedmalnourished,dehydratedandhighlystressedafterlongvoyagesstuffedintoboxes,cratesandsuitcases.Nowtheyarebrightandfullofenergy.TheCentre’seffortshavealsobeenrewardedwhenthefirstcheetahmatingtookplaceattheendof2002.Playingmatchmakerwiththesebeautifulcreaturesisnoeasytask–successfulbreedingrequiresconsiderablepatienceandintimateknowledgeofeachanimal’spersonality,anditistheresultofintensiveandexpertmanagementofeachanimalwithinthegroupaswellasofthegroupasawhole.Becausethisgroupwasstillyoungandinexperiencedincourtshipmatters,thekeepershadtomaketheintroductionsonlyaftercarefulplanningandmanagement,muchliketheleadroleinaJaneAustennovel.Thefemalecheetahswereinitiallyintimidatedbythepresenceofthemale;however,astheyadvancetooestrus,therolesarereversedandthemalecheetahbecomestoowarytoapproachduringthefemale’smostreceptivephaseofthecycle.Itistheresponsibilityofthekeeperthereforetomonitoreachindividualandtobeabletorespondtoanyindicationfromthecheetahsthatthetimeisrightforintroducingapair.Theclosebondthatinvariablydevelopsbetweenthekeeperandthecheetahsenablesthekeepertospoteventhemostsubtlesignsfromtheanimalsintheircare.Thetrustbetweenkeeperandanimalhasalsoallowedtheopportunitytostudycellularchangesinthesexualorgansofthefemalesduringthehormonalcyclesthatoccurpriortoreproduction.TheBreedingCentre’scheetahsarealsoparticipantsintheEuropeanbreedingprogramme,whichaimstoensurethatthegeneticdiversityofthisendangeredspeciesismaintainedandexpandedbybreedingasmanyfounderanimalsaspossibletointroducenewbloodlinesintothecaptivepopulation.Inthisway,thegroupheldatthecentreplaysaveryimportantroleinthefuturehealthoftheinternationalcaptivepopulation,astheyarepotentiallyallnewfounders.AlsoveryimportantfortheSharjahBreedingCentreistheleopard-breedingprogramme.AcademicTest1;Page8©ieltshelpnow.comTheArabianleopard,Pantherapardusnimr,iscriticallyendangeredaroundtheworldandparticularlyintheArabianpeninsula,whereitwasoncefoundthroughoutthecoastalmountainranges.Activitieslikehunting,trappingandhabitatdestructionhasreducedtheirrangetoafewisolatedandfragmentedpopulationsinOman,YemenandSaudiArabia.Inthe1980s,acaptivebreedingprogrammewasestablishednearMuscatwiththecaptureofthreeleopardsinsouthwesternOman.ThebreedingprogrammeintheUAEwasinitiatedbytheArabianLeopardTrustandstartedwiththearrivaloftwomaturespecimens:amaleArabianleopardfromYemenandafemaleonbreedingloanfromOmanin1995.ThearrivalofthesetwoanimalsledtotheconstructionoftheBreedingCentreinwhichtheleopardhasplayedtheroleofflagshipspecies.TodaytherearetwelveleopardsattheBreedingcentre,eightofwhichhavebeenbornatthecentresincethefirstcubin1998.Oncemore,thesecrettothecentre’ssuccessisthecloserelationshipbetweenanimalandkeeper.Theleopardisusuallyshyandsecretivewithpeoplearound,butheretheyreactpositivelytothepresenceoftheirkeepers,approachingthefencesotheycanbetalkedtoorscratchedbehindanear.Thebondisparticularlyimportantduringbreedingseason,whenkeepersdecidetointroducepairstoeachother.Maleleopardsareknowntohavekilledtheirpartnersonintroduction,soitisessentialforthekeepertounderstandtheleopards’behaviourtodecidewhenitissafetodoso.Thetrustisalsoimportantifkeepersneedtoenterdenstocheckonandmonitorthecub’sgrowth.Leopardfemaleshavebeenknowntokilltheircubsifthedenshavebeendisturbed,butthecentre’sleopardsarequitecomfortablewiththestaffhandlingthenewgenerationofcubs.Questions1-8Usetheinformationinthetexttomatchthestatements(1–8)withtheanimals(A–D).Writetheappropriateletter(A–D)inboxes1–8onyouranswersheet.Write:AifthestatementreferstocheetahsattheBreedingCentre.BifthestatementreferstoleopardsattheBreedingCentre.CifthestatementreferstobothcheetahsandleopardsattheBreedingCentre.DIfthestatementreferstoneithercheetahsnorleopardsattheBreedingCentre.ExampleAnswerTheseanimalsareendangeredC1TheseanimalsweresmuggledintotheUAE.2AtfirsttheseanimalsdidnotadapttolifeattheSharjahBreedingCentre3TheseanimalsareregardedasthemostimportantanimalattheCentre.4HalfoftheseanimalswerebornattheBreedingcentre.AcademicTest1;Page9©ieltshelpnow.comSou
