20103rdInternationalConferenceonAdvancedComputerTheoryandEngineering(ICACTE)ResearchonthearchitectureofInternetofthingsMiaoWu,Ting-lieLu,Fei-YangLing,lingSun,Hui-YingDuSchoolofEconomicsandManagement,BeijingUniversityofPostsandTelecommunications,Beijinge-mail:koala.miao@gmail.comAbstract-TheInternetofThingsisatechnologicalrevolutionthatrepresentsthefutureofcomputingandcommunications.ItisnotthesimpleextensionoftheInternetortheTelecommunicationsNetwork..IthasthefeaturesofboththeInternetandtheTelecommunicationsNetwork,andalsohasitsowndistinguishingfeature.Throughanalysingthecurrentacceptedthree-layerstructureoftheInternetofthings,wesuggestthatthethree-layerstructurecan'texpressthewholefeaturesandconnotationoftheInternetofThings.AfterreanalysingthetechnicalframeworkoftheInternetandtheLogicalLayeredArchitectureoftheTelecommunicationManagementNetwork,weestablishnewfive-layerarchitectureoftheInternetofThings.WebelievethisarchitectureismorehelpfultounderstandtheessenceoftheInternetofThings,andwehopeitishelpfultodeveloptheInternetofThings.Keywords-InternetofThings;architecture;five-layer;Internet;Telecommunications1.INTRODUCTIONThereisnogenerallyaccepteddefinitionabouttheInternetofThings(alsoasIoT).ThetermloT,firstusedbyKevinAshtoninapresentationin1998,describesanemergingglobal,Internet-basedinformationservicearchitecture.[1]Overadecadeago,thelateMarkWeiserdevelopedaseminalvisionoffuturetechnologicalubiquity-oneinwhichtheincreasingavailabilityofprocessin�powerwouldbeaccompaniedbyitsdecreasingvisibility.]Asheobserved,themostprofoundtechnologiesarethosethatdisappear...theyweavethemselvesintothefabricofeverydaylifeuntiltheyareindistinguishablefromit.[3]TheInternetofThingsisatechnologicalrevolutionthatrepresentsthefutureofcomputingandcommunications,anditsdevelopmentdependsondynamictechnicalinnovationinanumberofim�ortantfields,fromwirelesssensorstonanotechnology.[]Technically,thearchitectureisbasedondatacommunicationtools,primarilyRFIO-taggeditems(RadioFrequencyIdentification).ThepurposeoftheloTconsistsinthefacilitationofinformationexchangesabout,amongotherthings,goodsinglobalsupplychainnetworks,i.e.theIT-infrastructureshouldprovideinformationaboutthingsinasecureandreliablemanner.Extendingtheinitialapplicationscope,theloTmightalsoserveasbackboneforubiquitouscomputing,enablingsmartenvironmentstorecognizeandidentifyobjects,andretrieveinformationfromtheInternettofacilitatetheiradaptivefunctionality.[1]II.CURRENTARCHITECTUREOFloTDifferentfromitsdifinitionunclear,thearchitectureofloTisgenerallyaccepted.Thewell-known3-layerarchitectureconsistsofthePerceptionLayer,theNetworkLayerandtheApplicationlayer,asshowninFigurel.ApplicltionLlyerNetworkLayerPerceptionlayerFigure!.3-!ayerarchitectureoftheInternetofThingsA.ThePerceptionLayerThePerceptionLayerislikethefacialskinandthefivesenseorgansofloT,whichismainlyidentifyingobjects,gatheringinformation.ThePerceptionLayerincludes2-Dbarcodelabelsandreaders,RFIDtagsandreader-writers,camera,GPS,sensors,terminals,andsensornetwork.Itsmaintaskistoidentifytheobject,gatheringinformation.B.ThenetworklayerThenetworklayerisliketheneuralnetworkandbrainofloT,itsmainfunctionistransmittingandprocessinginformation.ThenetworklayerincludesaconvergencenetworkofcommunicationandInternetnetwork,networkmanagementcenter,informationcenterandintelligentprocessingcenter,etc.Thenetworklayerwilltransmitandprocesstheinformationobtainedfromperceptionlayer.C.TheApplicationLayerTheApplicationLayerisacombinationofloT'ssocialdivisionandindustrydemand,torealizetheextensiveintellectualization.TheApplicationLayeristhedeepconvergenceofloTandindustraytechnology,combinedwithindustryneedstorealizetheintellectualizedindustry,similartoperson'ssocialdivisionoflabor,eventuallyformhumansociety.ThismodellayersdescribedthestructureofloTfromthetechnicallevel,itisreasonableattheinitialstageofdevelopment.Wecanseethatvarioustechnologiesmentionedinthisstructurebasiclyhavevaryingdegreeofdevelopmentandapplication,buttheInternetofThingsstillhasnotbeenlarge-scaleappliedintoourworkandlife,and978-1-4244-6542-2/$26.00©2010IEEEV5-48420I03rdInternationalConferenceonAdvancedComputerTheoryandEngineering(ICACTE)evenmanyscholarsthinktheInternetofThingsisavisionarycloud-castle.Investigateitsreason,mainlybecauseitislackofgoodmanagementmethodsandbusinessmodels.JustastheInternet,itsboomingdevelopmentnotonlydependsonthetechnologyprogress,moreonvariousnewapplicationsandsuccessfulbusinessmodels.Therefore,weshouldnotonlybreakthroughtechnologyproblemsconstantly;atthesametimeshouldalsopaymoreattentiontoitsmanagementmodeandbusinessmodels.However,differentfromtheInternet,whichcan'tbemanagedandcontrolled,theInternetofThingsneedstobemanagedandoperated.Fromthispoint,itismoresimilartothecommunicationnetwork,becausebothofthemneedtobecontroledandoperated.Forthisreason,inordertounderstandtheInternetofThings'systemstructurecorrectly,weshouldanalysethesetwonetworkstructure,theInternetandcommunicationsnetwork,andcombinethefeaturesofInternetofThings,finallyobtainabetterandmore
