AppreciationofthePoemInaStationoftheMetro学号:11211010425姓名:张欣慧InaStationoftheMetroTheapparitionofthesefacesinthecrowd;Petalsonawet,blackbough.InaStationoftheMetroisanimagistpoembyEzraPoundpublishedin1913inPoetry.TheauthorEzraPound,wasanAmericanpoet,critic,andheisoneofthefoundersofimagistpoetrymovement.Thislittlepoem,althoughonlytwolines,butitisoneoftheearliestimagistpoetrymasterpiece.And,thisisthetwolinesofpoetry,andhasmorethan20kindsofdifferentChineseversion.ThispoemattemptstodescribePound'sexperienceuponvisitinganundergroundmetrostationinParisin1912,andPoundsuggestedthatthefacesoftheindividualsinthemetrowerebestputintoapoemnotwithadescriptionbutwithanequation.Becauseofthetreatmentofthesubject'sappearancebywayofthepoem'sownvisuality,itisconsideredaquintessentialImagisttext.InthepoetryofInaStationoftheMetro,oneofthemostimpressivecharacteristicsofartisticexpressionisimagesuperpositioncharacterizedbyintuitivenesswhichlinksmetaphorandimagestogethertoproduceavarietyofspecialanduniqueartisticeffect.InthepoetryofInaStationoftheMetro,theimageof“apparitionoffaces”inthefirstlineechoesto“petalsonabough”inthesecondline.Suchkindofimagesuperpositioncontainsprofoundthoughtsandleavesusanunmeasuredmentalspacetoimaginetheinformationandemotionhiddeninthispoetry.Thesetwosetsofimagesinfrontofushavedescribessuchapicturelike:Afteraheavyrain,theskywasgloomyandgrey,theairwashumidandfilledwiththesmellofmaterialdecadence.Adarkandwetsubwaystationwasstandinginacornerofthecity.Peopleinthisstationwerecrowdandsilent,movingmechanicallywithoutanycommunicationswithothers.Someofthemseemedtobealert,someseemedtocunningandsomeseemedtobeindifferentwitheverything,withoutanyfaceexpression.Suddenly,thereappearedinnocentfacesofchildrenasgoodaspetals,theywerehandinhandwitheachotherandsingalongwiththeirsongs…Thepoetwaspleasantlysurprisedandrefreshedbythesefaces.Andinthispoetry,therearetwolineswithalltogetherfourteenwordsandexceptforthewordslike:in,these,of,a,the,on,therearemainlyfivenounsandtwoadjectives.Itproducesfourimageswithtwoimagesinthefirstlineandanothertwointhesecondline.Inthefirstline,therearethetwoimages:“face”and“crowd”.“Face”isthecarrierof“apparition”,anditisthebrightspotinthecrowdedsubwaystation.The“face”underthefoilof“apparition”lookslikethelotusinthemud.Andthesecondimageisthe“crowd”whichpresentsthesceneofthepoetry----subwaystation.Inthiscrowdedstationwherepeoplecomesandgoesinahurry,theonlyonethingcaughtpoet’seyeswasthefacesofthebeautywhoappearedunimaginablyanddisappearedhastily.That’swhytheauthorcalledthem“apparition”,sincetheyaresobeautifulthatthepoetcannotbelieveanddisappearsoquicklythattheportcannotgraspintime.Inthesecondline,thereareanothertwoimages,“petals”and“bough”.EzraPoundresembled“petals”tothe“faces”oftheyoungandchildrenthatappearedinthedarkandwetsubwaystation.Andliketherelationsbetween“petals”and“faces”,“bough”alsoechoestotheimageof“crowd”whichservesasafoilto“petals”.Andtherearetwoadjectivesusedtomollify“bough”,theyare“black”and“wet”.Becauseofthecloserelationsbetween“bough”and“crowd”,thetwoadjectives“black”and“wet”notonlybelongstotheimageof“bough”,butalsomollifytheimageof“crowd”while“wet”demonstratesthefaceofsweatsorglitteringeyesofthebeauty;and“black”demonstratesthedarknessinthestationandthegloomyofpeople.EzraPoundisoneofthefoundersofimagismandputsforwardthreeprinciplesofimagistpoetry.AndInaStationoftheMetroisoneofhismasterpiecesinimagistpoemswhichclearlyandskillfullypresentsthefirstprincipleofdescribingandpresentingthingsdirectlyandconcisely.Obviously,itisthetraffichubofacitythatcanbestdemonstratethemoderncivilcultureinit.Thus,theimageofcitywouldbetterbepresentedbythesubwaystation.Since,overthere,youcanwitnesstheupsanddownsofpeopleandimaginetheprosperityandpovertyofthecity;Andundertheseveredestructionofindustrialcivilization,onlyplantsgrowinginnaturalenvironmentcanbetterdemonstratethepassedgoodindustrialcivilization.Thus,the“petals”onthe“bough”mustbethebestimageofthegoodthingsproducedbyindustrialsociety.ItisthesetwototallydifferentsetsofimagesthatprovideuswithdirectaccesstounderstandthefeelingsofEzraPoundtowardswesternindustrialcountry.Wecanunderstanditfromtwodifferentways.Ontheonehand,“petals”notgrowongreenbranchedbutonthewetblack“bough”.Itformsanobviouscontrastbetweenthebeautyof“petals”andtheblackof“bough”,whichmakesthe“petals”looksmorebeautifulandtheblack“bough”muchmoreuglyanddisgusting.Formthispoint,wecanimaginethatpoethatestheluxury,materialisticinflation,andindifferencewhichdeeplyrootedatcitylife,andeagerstopursuethegoodthingswhicharefullofhopeandoptimism.Ontheotherhand,ontheblackwet“bough”,thereappearedbeautiful“petals”,andinhumidandgloomyenvironment,thereappearedglittering“faces”ofbeauty.The“apparitionoffaces”and“petalsonthebough”supportseachotherandaddstoeachother’sconnotationofimage.Formthispoint,andthinktogetherwithourusuallives,itwouldnotbedifficultforustofindthephilosophycontainedinit:Thedarknessinsocietyiscoincidedwiththebrightness;andtheuglinessisalsocoincidedwithbeautytoexistintheworld;andthedilemmamustcoinci
