英语硕士论文答辩陈述1/3OpeningSpeechGoodafternoon,distinguishedprofessorsandeverybodyhere,thankyouforattendingtheoraldefense.Mynameis**.IamreallyhonoredtobeheretopresentmythesistoyouallandIgratefullywelcomeanycorrection.ThetitleofmypaperisFidelityorTreason:ExerciseoftheTranslator’sSubjectivityintheEnglishVersionofWolfTotem.Ichoosethisasmytopicduetothefollowingreasons.Firstly,IamalwaysinterestedinthetranslationandspreadingofChinesecontemporaryliterature.Asyouallknow,althoughChineseculturehasgraduallyattractedtheworld’sattentionwithChina’srapiddevelopmentinrecentyears,thenumberofChinesebookstranslatedandintroducedtothewesternworldisstilllow.Generallyspeaking,Chinesecontemporaryliteratureisnotwellacceptedbywesternreaders.ButWolfTotemisanexception.ItwastranslatedbyHowardGoldbalttin2008andhasexhibitedgoodmarketperformance.Sobythisthesis,IwanttofindthereasonsforwhythetranslationofWolfTotemhasbecomeasuccess,inanattempttosupplyananswertothetranslationandspreadingofChinesecontemporaryliteraturetothewesternworld.Secondly,sincethe“culturalturn”in1980s,theissueofthetranslator’ssubjectivityhasgraduallybecomeahotresearchtopic.Scholarsbothathomeandabroadhavedemonstratedanobvioustendencytoenhancethetranslators’statusandhighlighttheirsubjectivity.Well,thisisawelcomechangeintranslationstudy.However,manyarefondofstressingtheimportanceofunbridledplayofthetranslator’ssubjectivity,somuchsothattheypaylittleattentiontotherestrictivefactorswhichalwaysgreatlyinfluencetheexercisethetranslator’ssubjectivity.Thus,howtoappropriatelyexercisethetranslator’ssubjectivityremainstobeacontroversialissue.Soitisalsooneofmymajorconcernstofindaproperwaytojudgewhetherthetranslatorappropriatelyexerciseshissubjectivityornot.Thirdly,thetranslatorHowardGoldbalttholdsasetoftranslationthoughtsthatfittheverysubjectofthisthesis.Ontheonehand,hepaysduerespecttotheauthor,andtrytobefaithfultotheoriginaltext,andontheotherhand,heagreesthateverytranslationisabetrayalanddeemstranslationasanactivityofrewritingtosomeextent.Andhistranslationthoughtsare英语硕士论文答辩陈述2/3embodiedinhistranslationworks,includingWolfTotem.InWolfTotem,effortstotrytostrikeabalancebetween“treason”and“fidelity”canbeeasilydetected.ThesearethemajorreasonsforwhyIchoosethistopic.Andnow,Iwillpresentmythesistoyou.Hereisanoutlineofmypresentation.Thisthesisiscomposedofsixparts.Chapteroneisanintroductionthatprimarilystatestheresearchbackground,theresearchsignificanceandthestructureofthethesis.ChapterTwoisanoverviewofstudiesontranslator’ssubjectivity.Itgoesoverthetraditionalviewsontranslator’ssubjectivityandthenthelateststudiesonthisissuesincethe“culturalturn”bothathomeandabroad.ChapterThreemainlydealswiththeissueoftranslator’ssubjectivity.Itexplainstheconceptsofsubjectandsubjectivity,expoundstheconnotationandcharacteristicsoftranslator’ssubjectivity,anddiscussesitsmanifestationandrestrictivefactorsduringtranslation.Onthebasisoftheseanalyses,thisthesisavoidsthetraditional“faithfulness”criterion.Instead,itsuggeststhattheexerciseofthetranslator’ssubjectivitycanbejudgedfromthefollowingaspects:Firstly,towhatextentdoesthetranslatorconveytheelements(likeworddiction,culturalelements,literarystyle,majorthemeandsoon)embodiedintheoriginal?Secondly,howwellisthetranslatedversionacceptedbythetargetreaders?Thirdly,doesthetranslatorbuildaharmoniousrelationshipwithhispatronsduringtranslation?Lastly,doesthetranslatedversionconformtothedominantideologyandpoeticsinthetargetculture?ChapterFourbrieflyintroducestheauthorJiangRong,theoriginaltextLangTuteng,thetranslatorHowardGoldblattandhistranslatedversionWolfTotem.ChapterFiveisthemainbodyofthethesiswhichdealswithHowardGoldblatt’ssubjectivityinWolfTotemtranslation.AdoptingthejudgingmethodputforwardinChatperthree,itfirstlyanalyzesthefactorsinfluencingGoldblatt’ssubjectivityinbothdecidingwhattotranslateandselectingtranslatingstrategies,andthenmovesontofocusonexamplestakenfromthetranslatedversiontoseehowGoldblattexerciseshissubjectivityintranslatingthenovel.FinallyChaptersix,theconcludingpart,drawstheconclusionthatduringtheprocessoftranslation,Goldblattfollowedadvisableadvicesfromhispatrons,adaptedthenovel英语硕士论文答辩陈述3/3totargetreaders’tastesaswellasthecurrentideologyandpoeticsinwesternworld，didagoodjobinconveyingtheelementsoftheoriginaltothetargetreadersandstrokeabalancebetween“fidelity”and“treason”.AlltheseeffortsfinallycontributedtothesuccessoftheEnglishversionofWolfTotem.Thisisaboutthemaincontentofmythesis.NowIamreadyforyourquestions.Thankyou.
