YOU.ARE.THE.DEAD.OhmyGod.Igotthechillssomanytimestowardtheendofthisbook.Itcompletelyblewmymind.ItmanagedtosurpassmyhighexpectationsANDbenothingatalllikeIexpected.OrinNewspeakDoublePlusGood.Letmeprefacethiswithanapology.IfIsoundstunninglyinarticulateattimesinthisreview,Ican'thelpit.Mymindiscompletelyfried.ThisbookislikethedystopianLordoftheRings,withitsrichlydevelopedcultureandeconomics,nottomentionafullydevelopedlanguagecalledNewspeak,orrathermoreoftheanti-language,whosepurposeistolimitspeechandunderstandinginsteadoftoenhanceandexpandit.Theworld-buildingissofullyfleshedoutandspine-tinglinglyterrifyingthatit'salmostasifGeorgetravelledtosuchaplace,escapedfromit,andthenjustwroteitalldown.IreadFahrenheit451overtenyearsagoinmyearlyteens.Atthetime,Irememberreallywantingtoread1984,althoughInevermanagedtogetmyhandsonit.I'malmostgladIdidn't.ThoughIwouldnothaveadmitteditatthetime,itwouldhavegoneovermyhead.Orattheveryleast,Iwouldn'thavebeenabletoappreciateitfully.Fromthestart,theauthormanagestoarticulatesomanyofthethingsIhavethoughtaboutbuthaveneverbeenabletofindawaytoputintowords.EveninthefirstfewchaptersIfoundmyselfhavingtostopjusttoquietlyconsiderthewordsofMrOrwell.Forinstance,hetalksabouthowtheactofwritingitselfisatypeoftimetravel.Itiscommunicatingwiththefuture.Iwritethesewordsnow,butothersmaynotdiscoverthemforhours,weeks,orevenyears.Forme,itisonetime.Foryouthereader,itisanentirelydifferentone.Justthethoughtthatreadingandwritingcouldonedaybeoutlawedjustshiversmytimbers.IrelatedtoWinstonsomuchinthatway.Iwouldhavefoundawaytoreadorwrite.Thepoliticsandpsychologyofthisnovelrundeep.Thesocietyinthebookhasnowrittenlaws,butmanyactsarepunishablebydeath.ThesloganoftheParty(WarisPeace...)isentirelyconvoluted.IndividualityisfrowneduponandcouldleadtobeinglabeledatraitortotheParty.Ialsorememberalwayswonderingwhythetitlewas1984.IwasfamiliarwiththeconceptofBigBrotherandwonderedwhythatwasn'tthenameofthebook.Inthestory,theydon'tactuallyknowwhatyearitisbecausesomuchofthepasthasbeenerasedbytheMinistryofTruth.Itcouldveryeasilyhavebeen1981.Ithinkthatmakesthetitlemorepowerful.Somethingassimpleastheyearordateisunknowntothesepeople.Theyhavetobelieveitiswhateverdaythattheyaretolditis.Theydon'thavetherighttokeeptrack.Knowledgeispowerful.Knowledgeisnecessary.ButaccordingtoBigBrother.Ignoranceisstrength.1984iswritteninpasttenseandhaslongparagraphsofexposition,recountingevents,andexplainingthesociety.Theseareusuallythingsthatdistancemefromabookandfromthecharacters,butOrwellmanagedtokeepmefullyenthralled.Hefrequentlytalksincirclesandideasareoftenrepeatedbutitisstillintriguing,nonetheless.ImustadmitthatIzonedoutabitwhileWinstonwasreadingfromTheBook,butIwasveryfascinatedbytheculture.Sometimesitseemsasthoughtheonlywaytoreallyexperienceacharactersemotionsisthroughfirstperson.Thisisnotthecasewiththisbook,asitiswritteninthirdperson;yet,IneverfailedtobeencompassedinWinston'sfeelings.Georgemanagestoensurethatthereaderneverfeelsdisconnectedfromtheeventsthatareunfoldingaroundthem,withtheexceptionofthebeginningwhenWinstonisjuststartingtobecomeawakened.IdevelopedastrongattachmenttoWinstonandthrivedonlivinginsidehismind.IbecameamemberoftheThoughtPolice,hearingeverything,feelingeverythingandlastbutnotleast,(whattheThoughtPolicearenotallowedtodo)questioningeverything.Iwasn'texpectingalovestoryinthisbook,buttherelationshipbetweenJuliaandWinstonwastrulyprofound.IenjoyeditevenmorethanIwouldhaveexpectedandthoughtthemomentsbetweenthemwerebeautiful.Iwasn'tsurewhetherhewasgoingtoeventuallybetrayJuliatothePartyornot,butIcertainlytearedupoftenwhenitcametotheirrelationship.Georgehasanuncannyabilitytogettothebaseofthehumanpsyche,attimessuggestingthatweneedtobeatwarformanydifferentreasons,whetherit'satwarwithourselvesorwithothers.ThatisonethingIhaveneverunderstood:whyhumansfeeltheneedtodestroyandcontroleachother.Itseemsthatthemainandrecurringmessageinthisbookisaboutcensorshipandbrainwashing.One,censorship,islimitedandlittleexposuretoideasoftheworld;theother,brainwashing,isforcedandtoomuchexposuretoacertainideas.Bothcanbeextremelydangerous.InsidetheministryofTruth,hedemonstratesthedangersofcensorshipbyshowinghowthePartyhascompletelyrewrittenthepastbyforgingandabolishingdocumentsandphysicalevidence.WealsospendquiteabitoftimewithWinstonintheMinistryofLove,wherethebrainwashingtakesplace.ThosewhocommitthoughtcrimearetortureduntiltheygrowtoloveandobeyBigBrotherandserveonlytheinterestsoftheParty.Acommonthemeoccurredtomethroughoutthebook,althoughitwasn'tnecessarilyreferencedconsistently.Thegoodofthemanyismoreimportantthanthegoodoftheone.Therearesomanyvariableswhenitcomestothisstatementandforthemostpartitseemsnaturaltosay,Ofcourse,themanyismoreimportantthantheone,butwheninsideWinston'shead,allthatIbegantocareaboutwashiswell-beingandnotifhewasabletohelpdisbandorconquerthePartyandBigBrother.Ijustwantedhimtobeatpeace.Whetherornotthegoodofallismoreimportantthanthatoftheone,Ican'tanswer.Ithinkmostpeoplefeeltheirownhappinessismoreimportantthantherestoftheworld's,andmaybethat'spartofthep
