1.栖霞山Qixiamountain(pronouncedasKitsya),calledSheMountaininancienttimes,isnamedbecausetheQiXiaTempleislocatedonthewestsideofitshighestpeak.Therearethreepeaksalongthemountain:FengXiang(PhoenixFlying)Peak,Long(dragon)PeakandHu(Tiger)Peak.TheQiXiaTempleisthebiggestoneintheNanjingArea.ItisthecradleoftheBuddhismSchoolofTheThreeSastras.Itisoneoftheearliestestablishedmonasteriesandisstillcurrentlyinuse.HereyoucanvisitsometypicalBuddhiststructuresandlearnaboutthehistoryofBuddhism.QiXiaTempleisfamousnotonlyforthestructure,thestonesculpturesandthepagoda,butalsofortheclearspring,luxuriantplantlife;especiallytheredleavesofmapletrees.Theseareinfullbloominspringandautumnmakingthesetimesverypopular.Lying22kmnortheastofNanjingCity,QixiaMountain(SheMountain)isdubbed“themostbeautifulmountaininNanjing”.Themountainis286metershighandhasthreepeaks-DragonPeak,TigerPeakandFengxiangPeak.Thewell-knownBuddhisttemple,QixiaTemple,islocatedonthemountain.Thistemplewaserectedin489BCandwasenlargedintheTangDynasty.ItwasoncerecognizedasoneoftheFourLargestTemplesinhistory.ThetemplewasdestroyedbyfireduringQingDynastyandreconstructedyearslater.ThetemplehasanumberofcriticalhistoricrelicssuchastheThousandBuddhaCliff,theRoyalSteleandtheSheliPagoda.TheQixiaTempleRestaurantoffersvegetarianfoodsfortravelers.Recently,ChinesearcheologistshavefoundnumerousancientstoneinscriptionscarvedonthecliffsoftheMountain.ThecliffinscriptionswerefoundduringaresearchprojectforculturalrelicsandtheycouldbedatedbacktotheNorthernandSouthernDynasties(960-1279).ThearchaeologistshavealsounearthedfourgrottoesanddozensofBuddhistsculpturesinthegrottoes.Themountainispopularforitsmapletrees.Eachyear,whentheautumnarrives,thousandsoflocalresidentsandvisitorsrushtothemountaintocampandtoseetheredandgoldenmapleleaves,whichcoversthewholemountain.2.TangshanHotSpringTangshanislocatedinabout28kilometerseastofNanjingZhongshangate.Tangshanspringwatercomesfrom380metersundergroundandTangshanhotspringshasbeeninaconstanttemperature.Whetherinwinterorsummer,thereisalwayslittledifferenceintemperature.Itisineverywherewhichhasfivemouthofallthespings.ItistheeastChina'slargestopen-airhotspringbase,tangshanisstillthehotspringresort.3.ConfuciusTempleConfucius,China'slegendarysage,haslost.Theadvocateofrespect,restraintandorderisnowassociatedinNanjingers'mindswithonething--shopping!CenteredaroundtheancientConfuciusTemple(FuziMiao),thisneighborhoodinsouthernNanjingistheplacetobeonweekendsandholidays.Clothingshopsandrestaurantsdominatethemainstreets(closedtovehiculartraffic)whilestreetstallsinthealleywayssellstuffedanimals,plants,CDsandevenmoreclothes.ThedailynightmarketbringsthesestallsoutontoGongyuanLu,themaindragbetweentheConfuciusTempleandPingjiangFuLu,alivelysceneevenifmostofthegoodsonsalearesimplehouseholditems.Trytheyuanxiao,jelly-filleddumplingswhoseroundshapeandsweettastesymbolizehappinessandharmony.TouristsnotinterestedinbringingacactusandcheaphangersbackhomeasremindersoftheirtriptoNanjingcanloaduponsouvenirsatshopsclusteredclosertotheConfuciusTemplecomplex.Inadditiontotheusualselectionofjadegoodies,teapotsandpaintings,vendorsdisplayyuhuashi,multicoloredrocksspecialtoNanjing.AlthoughsomebelievethecolorscomefromChinesebloodspilledduringtheupheavalsofNanjing'stumultuoushistorythatthenseepedintothelocalrock,themorecommonlyaccepted(andnicer)storygoesthataBuddhistscholarwhopreachedinthehillsofsouthernNanjingsomovedthegodsthattheyshoweredflowersdownfromtheheavensinpraise.Upontouchingtheground,theseheavenlyflowerstransformedintothemulticoloredpebbles.Withallthegarishconsumerismondisplayoutside,it'slittlewonderthattheactualConfuciusTempleisthequietestplaceintheneighborhood.Thetemplewasfirstconstructedin1034duringtheSongDynastytocomplementtheJiangnanExaminationSchool(seebelow),wheretheimperialexaminationswereadministered.ScholarscametothetempletoprayforsuccessanddemonstratetheirhumblerespectforConfucius.Burntdownandrebuiltseveraltimes,thecurrentstructuredatesfromafterWorldWarTwo.ItstraditionalsweepingeavesgivethearchitectureaMingandQingflavor.Thetemple'smostoutstandingfeatureisabeautifulcollectionof36jadepanelsdetailingtheSage'slife(551-479BC)hangingonthewallsofthemainhall.BasedonthefamoussetofMingperiodpaintingstitledPicturesoftheSage'sTraces,eachpanelmeasuresabouttwometersinheightandonemeterinwidth.Thesepanels,however,arenew,donatedbyalocalcompanyin1998.FuziMiaoisperhapsatitsbestaroundthetimeoftheLanternFestival(fifteendaysaftertheLunarNewYear),whenaspecialexhibitofmulti-sizedandmulti-coloredlanternsthemedaroundthetwelveanimalsofthelunarcyclelendafestiveairtothetemple.Ifyouthinkthatyourlong,crampedflighttoChinawassomeformoftorture,avisittotheExhibitionoftheHistoryoftheJiangnanExaminationSchool(JiangnanGongyuan),shouldsetyourmindatease.Foundedin1168(theSongDynasty),theschoolwasusedtoadministertherigorouscivilserviceexamsusedtochooseofficialsduringChina'simperialage.Attheheightofitsprosperity,thecomplexcontained20,644examinationcells,eachjustonesquaremeterinarea.Candidatesspentatotalofninedaysintheircell--
