5PåElectronicEngineering5ElectricalEngineeringAnexperiencedelectronicengineertrainedinChina'smajorcradleoftechnologicaltalents,Iamsubmittingthisdocumentinsupportofmyapplicationforacceptanceintoyourgraduateprogram.Withmorethaneightyearsofhigherlearningandqualityresearchbehindme,Inowstandreadytopursueadvancedstudiesandscalegranderheightsinmycareer.Presently,IworkataleadingBeijing-basedcenteroftelecommunicationsresearchanddevelopment,jointlyrunbyCanada'sNorthernTelecomLtd.,oneoftheworld'sforemostITenterprises,andtheBeijingUniversityofYanjiu,amajorhigher-learninginstitutioninITtechnologiesinChina.Engagedincutting-edgeresearchanddevelopmentatthiscenter,IhaveaccumulatedalotofadvancedknowledgeandexpertiseinITtechnologiesinarelativelyshorttime.IobtainedthiscovetedpositionatsucharespectedinternationalestablishmentonthestrengthofmyresearchexperienceattheNorthChinaInstituteofComputingTechnologies,thecountry'soldestresearchorganizationincomputerscience.Exercisingmydiligenceandcreativity,Ispecializedinautomationresearchanddevelopmentinthisinstitute,whichnotonlygavemetheopportunitytomakefulluseofwhatIhadlearnedattheuniversitybutalsospurredmetoconstantlyimprovemyself.ItaughtmyselfComputerControlTechnology,ContemporaryControlTheory,ElectricalcontrolTechnologyandProcessControl&AutomationDevice,amongothersubjects.Becauseofmystrongskillsinbothhardwareandsoftware,Iwasappointedin1995theleaderofateamtodesignthecomputercontrolsystemDistributedControlSystem(DCS).Undermyeffectiveleadership,theteamcompleteddesignofthesystemstructure,developmentofthemodules,andprogrammingofthesoftware,andsystemdebuggingallinlessthanoneyear.Areal-timecomputercontrolsystem,itcanbecombinedwith2048channels.Forthisproject,Iindependentlydesignedthekernels-CPUmodule,twoothermodulesandtheI/Ointerfacesoftware.ThesystemisnowaleadingproductinChina'sautomationindustry.MyresearchsuccesseswerebuiltuponmysolidundergraduatetrainingatTsinghuaUniversity,widelyconsideredChina'sbestengineeringschool.Between1989and1994,IstudiedatTsinghuaasamajorofelectronicengineering,concentratingonbasiccoursesaswellascoursesofmymajor.Thesecoursessolidlygroundedmeintheoriesoftelecommunicationsandendowedmewithall-roundexpertiseinbothsoftwareandhardwareengineering.Atthetimeofmygraduation,myoverallGPArankedmeamongthetop10%ofabout200studentsinmygrade. TakingadvantageofTsinghua'semphasisonhands-onexperience,Ididalotoflabworkinmyundergraduatestudies.Inmythirdyear,Ijoinedtheuniversity'sLaboratoryofInformationSystems.InthelabIsuccessfullydesignedthe2Mb/sPCMDigitalInterface(32frames)usedintheanaloguePBX(PrivateBranchExchange).In1993,IindependentlydesignedaSpeechSignalProcessingCardusedintheSUNSPARCstation.ThissuccessfuldevelopmentofthiscardendedthesituationinwhichtheSUNSPARCstationcouldnotbeusedforspeechprocessingandothermultimediaapplications.Inthecourseoftheseprojects,IbecameversedinhardwarestructureoftheRISCcomputer,UNIXoperatingsystemandprogramming.Allthis1/25PåElectronicEngineering5ElectricalEngineeringlaidafirmfoundationformycareeradvancement.MyacademicstandingwassostrongthatIwasofferedacceptanceintoTsinghua'sgraduateschoolwithoutthenormallymandatoryadmissionexams.Thatwasaprivilegeavailabletoonlytheverybestofeachcropofgraduatingstudents.ButIdeclinedtheoffer,figuringthatIshouldgainchallengingresearchexperiencebehindme,IthinkthetimehascomeformetonotonlyundertakegraduatestudiesbutalsoundertakegraduatestudiesinaqualityprogramintheUnitedStates.Ideally,IwouldliketoenterintoaMaster'sprogramthatwouldleadmeintoPh.D.studieslateron.Insuchaprogram,Iwouldliketofocusmystudiesononeoracombinationofthefollowingareas:ControlSystems,CommunicationsEngineering,DigitalSignalandImageProcessing,orMicrocomputerApplications.Iwillbringtotheprogramaprofessionalbackgroundsignificantlyenrichmyknowledge,enhancemyexpertise,andsharpenmyresearchskills.Ifyouacceptme,youshouldfind,someyearsdowntheroad,thatIwillbealeadingscientistinChina'seffortstodevelopitsITindustries.2/2
