BriefdiscussionaboutRacialDiscriminationinAmerica1291510314CatherineIntroductionAmericaisamulti-racialandmulti-nationalitycountry.PeoplefromallovertheworldandfromdifferentraceshadcometoAmericasinceitsfoundation.Foralongtime,peopleofallnationalitieshavemadeagreatcontributiontothedevelopmentAmericansociety.However,thepresentsituationisdisaccordwithwhattheAmericanconstitutionhadadvocated,”Allmenarecreatedequal”,andtheracialdiscriminationstillexisttoday.Inthecontemporarysociety,itisnecessaryforustomakeathoroughunderstandingoftheproblemofracialdiscriminationinAmerica.IwouldliketoanalyzethereasonsoftheracialdiscriminationinAmericafromthreeaspects.MainbodyThereasonsoftheracialdiscriminationinAmerica1.TheinfluenceofAmericanhistoryAmericahasalwaysbeenknownasanationofimmigrants.EffectofimmigrationonUSAmaybemoreimportantthananyothercountriesintheworld.JustasPresidentCarterputitin1980:Ourstrengthliesinhertheheartsofpeopleandrichculturaldiversity.”ThreetimesofAmericanimmigrationinthehistorybroughtdifferentracialandethnicgroupstoAmerica,whichdirectlyledtodiversificationofthepopulation.Alongwiththepopulationdiversity,ethnicconflictbetweenthenewlyarrivedimmigrantsandAboriginesappeared:inthesouth,inordertomeettheneedsofplantationdevelopment,alargenumberofblackpeoplefromSouthAfricawereshippedformanuallabor,andthediscriminationagainstblackswasfromthenon.Alargenumberofimmigrantsnotonlyprovidedlaborforce,butalsobroughtnewskillsandnewtechnologytoacceleratetheindustrialization.Thethreebigwavesofimmigrants,Americapopulationwasincreasingatanalarmingrate,thecompositionofthepopulationwasmorediverse,andthatalsoinevitablyexacerbatedracialtensions.2.TherootsofAmericanculturalAsmentionedabove,USAiscomposedofpeopleofdifferentnationalities.Everynationalityhasitreligion,belief,lifestyleandvalues,andthesebelongtothecategoryofculture.Differentculturesgettogetherandcollidehere,tocoexistandgraduallytoreachacompromise.Finallymergeintoanewculture--Americanuniqueculture.Butinfact,thiscompromiseishardtoachieve,becauseitisalmostimpossiblefortwoabsolutelydifferentculturestocompletelyfusion.Sometheoriessuggestthattheminorityculture(includingattitudes,valuesandlanguage)istheirbarriersforsuccessfulsocialcompetition,soperhapsthisisindeedoneofthereasonsthattheycannotenterthemainstreamculturewhichthewhitedominated.Asaresult,USAgovernmentsatalllevelsandallleadersoverwhelminglyarethewhite.Americanpolitical,economic,military,culturalandotherfieldsofpowerareinthehandsofthewhitehands,thisisanundeniablefact.2.ThecausesofAmericansocialstructureThethirdcauseofracialdiscriminationistheAmericansocialstructure,thatmainlyreferstothedominationandoppressionofminoritiesinthesocialpoliticaleconomicsystem.Butcomparedwiththeindividualdiscriminationagainsttheminorities,itismoresevere.Fromtheverybeginning,theblackwasconsideredinferior,andlaws,customs,traditionalmadethesituationworsethereafter.Forexample,whenapersonusedNegro,Niggertoexpresshisfeelings,hedidn'tmeantoinsultablack,butaccidentallyrevealedhisbiastowardblack.Althoughthisisonlythelanguageitself,butfromtheexample,wecanseeclearlytheexistinglanguage,customs,laws,faithdenyminorityshouldbeequal,andthebiasissubconscious.Werecognizethatthisdiscriminationhasitshistoricalroots,buttheexistingsocialsystemdoesnoteliminatethiskindofdiscrimination.Sowithoutthereformofsocialsystem,itisdifficulttoeliminatetheinstitutionaldiscrimination.ConclusionFromthediscoveryoftheAmericancontinenttothefoundingoftheU.S.asanindependentnation,andfromthefirstsettler’sexplorationoftheNewWorldtotoday’sflourishingU.S.asaworldsuperpower,theracialdiscriminationproblemhaseverremainedconcerntoAmericansociety.Suchsystemsaspolitics,economy,culture,ect.arereallyimprovedracialdiscriminationcouldbedispelledtomakesurethatvariousnationalitiesareequallytreated.
