InterdependencebetweenCompetenceandPerformanceAccordingtoChomsky,competencereferstotheabstractandhiddenrepresentationoflanguageknowledgeheldinsideourminds,withitspotentialtocreateandunderstandoriginalutterancesinagivenlanguage;performancereferstothedataactualutterancesthatpeoplehaveproduced,whichconsistsoftheuseofthisgrammarinthecomprehensionandproductionoflanguage.However,inFirth’sopinion,dualismisaquiteunnecessarynuisance,forlinguistswhobelievesindualism,theyalwaysstruggleontowhichextentone’sperformancecanreflectone’scompetence.AsfarasI’mconcerned,competenceandperformanceareinterdependent--one’scompetencemainlydecideshisperformanceandone’sperformancerevealshiscompetenceinalargedegree.What’smore,weshouldconsidertheminadynamicperspective--one’scompetenceandperformancewillgetimproveddaybyday.Theybenefiteachother--abettercompetencecreatesbetterperformances;throughone’sperformances,onecananalyzethemandgetexperienceofhowtoperformbetternexttimeandtherefore,one’sperformanceshelpenhancehiscompetence.Thetheorymakessenseonlywhenitisappliedinourdailypractice.Whenitcomestoourownstudies,itisdefinitelymuchessentialtohaveagoodcommanderofEnglishorotherlanguages.Inanotherword,weneedtoenhanceourcompetenceofacertainlanguage.What’smore,ofthesameimportance,weneedtolearnhowtoperformwell.Therearemanyfactorsthataffectperformance,i.e.preparation,physicalandpsychologicalstate,relatedskillsandsoon.Inordertoperformwell,weshouldhaveagoodpreparationandwellphysicalandpsychologicalstateandhavethoserelatedskillsinourmind.Asthesayinggoes,practicemakesperfect,weshoulddomuchpracticalexercisestoenhanceourperformance.Whilewhenitcomestoourteachingactivities,itisofgreatimportancetoidentifythepotentialsofthestudentsandcultivatethem.Whenweappreciatethegood,thegoodappreciates,therefore,ateachershouldnotscoldhisstudentsandtheyshouldencouragetheminstead.JusttakethefamousteacherMarvaCollinsasaexample.ShewasborninAlabamainthe1930s.Shewasbornatatimeataplacewheretherewasagreatdealofdiscrimination.Withherfather’sencouragement,sheworkedhardandbecameasectaryandlaterateacher.Asateacher,shesawthepotentialsinherstudentsandencouragedthemtobelieveinthemselves.Bythisway,shesucceededinkeepingthestudentsintheschoolratherthanleavingthemwanderingonthestreets,takingdrugsandhavingfightseachother.Daybyday,herstudentsbecameverysuccessfulandhernamebecameknowntotheworld.NowthereareMarvaCollinsschoolsalloverAmerica.Shebecametheonewhomademiracles.Herstoryprovesthatwhenateacherbelievesinherstudents,miracleswilljusthappen.What’smore,weshouldnotbeshort-sightedandonlycareabouttheinterestsatpresent.Weshouldviewthingsinthelongrunandcareaboutthefutureinterests.Asateacher,weshouldfocusonthefutureeffectsofteachingonstudentsandshouldnotaimattheresultsonly.Inconclusion,ateacherwhocaresabouthisstudentsisagoodteacher.Mayeveryoneofuscanlearnbasiclanguageknowledgewellandbecomeaqualifiedteacherinthefuture.
